Re: This Week in ECAC Hockey (Feb 22) - 6 years ago
CU2007 Al DeFlorio KenP Nice recap of last week, although they need to bookmark the eLynah Speling Guide. Also, note injury update: Cornell has continued to play well despite the loss of forward Mitch Vanderlaan to injury. The junior co-captain hasn’t played since getting hurt blocking a shot on Feb. 3, but Schaefer hopes to have him back for the postseason. Speaking of which... +1by KenP - Hockey

Re: 2018 ECAC Permutations - 6 years ago
Is there a way to factor in the odds of a tie? I know it is incorporated into B-T ratings... but my guess is that hockey's non-binary results are a significant source of forecast error.by KenP - Hockey
Re: 2018 ECAC Permutations - 6 years ago
scoop85 Not strictly ECAC related, but this seems to confirm we’re in the NCAA’s regardless of what happens the rest of the way: We ran the Pairwise Probability Matrix for the first time, and 10 teams are locks, or just about locks, for the NCAAs ... ... Only 16 teams have 20% or higher at-large chances— College Hockey News (@chnews) February 19, 2018 . Also shows 91% likelihood of beiby KenP - Hockey

No question game(s) of the week coming up will be the pair of games Denver at St Cloud.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Brown at Cornell 2/16 - 6 years ago
upprdeck several games now we have had pretty good control then went flat, Isn’t that the textbook definition of a cupcake schedule? Come tournament time we won’t get a second chance. Other teams are accustomed to bringing 100% every night.by KenP - Hockey

Are you buying Allentown tickets now just in case? Are you buying for all Regionals? How hard is it to sell them if Cornell is placed in a different Regional?by KenP - Hockey
Re: Polls 2017-18 - 6 years ago
Cornell and St. Cloud swap spots. Men drop to #4 still receiving 7 first place votes. Not a whole lot of spread in the top four. Quickly drops off in a tight race for #5 and #6, then the rest of the field. Women are up to #5.by KenP - Hockey

I really like the St. Lawrence announcer. He understands the game and his talking helps you understand what you are seeing.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Injuries - 6 years ago
CU2007 Swampy BearLover Also, re: ethics, I think the only ethical grey area here is whether there is something problematic about signing up for an opposing team's mailing list just to glean injury information. A bigger ethical issue is letting a player start playing again who's not 100%. It the player's injury could be made worse, or it might cause the player to have a lifetime of pain or otby KenP - Hockey
Re: Injuries - 6 years ago
How much do you think Schafer is "playing it safe" given our record? I know all the catch phrases like we need to take it one game at a time, first goal is the regular season, blah blah. Would he sideline a marginally ready skater so they are closer to 100% for post-season?? What would you do if your player was just over the cusp of being ready to play tomorrow given there are (hopby KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology Starts - 6 years ago
jfeath17 "The outcome of each game in each simulation is determined by random draw, with the probability of victory for each team set by their relative KRACH ratings. So, if the simulation set included a contest between team A with KRACH 300 and team B with KRACH 100, team A will win the game in very close to 75% of the simulations. I don’t simulate ties or home ice advantage." Do the Kby KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology Starts - 6 years ago
jfeath17 I prefer this site. Shows where in the pairwise each team will finish based versus how many of their remaining games they win. My only complaint with that site is that it ends with the regular season. Not sure if that's true of the playoffstatus site.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Bracketology Starts - 6 years ago
Beeeej RichH BearLover andyw2100 We are now at a 90% probability of getting a 1-seed! I'm pretty sure this playoffstatus predictor is heavily flawed. It does not appear to sufficiently account for the inherent variance of a hockey game and considers a good team losing to a lesser team an extremely unlikely event. For example, it gives Cornell a 96% chance of making Lake Placid, which is obvioby KenP - Hockey

So what is Cornell’s record against Top 5 teams? Top 10? Top 20? Look at the sample size and performance and you will understand Western Bias.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Dartmouth 1/27/18 - 6 years ago
Jim Hyla Dartmouth outshot Colgate 44-24 in their win. Now 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, the Big Green (9-10-2, 7-6-1) are alone in fifth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with 15 points I just hope given illnesses they have the stamina to play 60+ minutes of quality hockey tonight. After outshooting D'mth 31-16 in the 3-0 win at Lynah, I sure hope they don't forget about tonight's game.by KenP - Hockey
Re: Opponents News 2: Hockey's the Reason for the Season - 6 years ago
IMO hitting a PWR milestone on a Friday is like the Dow or NASDAQ breaking a record in the middle of the trading day. Hopefully we win tonight and can see an uptick in the polls on Monday. (And yes... much more important is our ranking and polls at the end of the season....)by KenP - Hockey
Re: Fake News? - 6 years ago
Let's ask the question in a different way. Is Cornell'18 as scary as Clarkson'18? Or Yale or Quinnipiac or Union or Sucks from recent seasons? If I were a betting man I don't know if I'd put this team as the favorite in any of those match-ups.... We are good; still not sure if we are elite.by KenP - Hockey
