Re: OT: Dany Heatley - 20 years ago
(It wasn't clear in the article, but i assume the accident happended in Canada.) As I remember it, the MacTavish accident was in Massachusetts. He was driving home after leaving a strip joint on route 1. Also, I think in that case, the deceased was not a passenger, but in another vehicle.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: screw BU! - 20 years ago
has the red and white game always been the way cornell kicks off its hockey season? Back in my era, when freshman were not eligible to play varsity hockey, the Freshman team played vs. the Varsity, rather than the current Red vs. White. Post Edited (10-01-03 18:15)by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Dark uniforms at home - 20 years ago
The NHL changed from home colors to home whites for the '70-'71 season. I attended the Canadiens home opener that year against Ned's red-clad Wings. Since then, there was at least one half season when they switched back just for variety, and in recent years they have allowed home teams to occasionally where the darks at home as well as 3rd uniforms - although I'm not sure what the approval proby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Ivy League Admissions Athletes - 20 years ago
During the admissions process, each student is given an "academic index" number based on a complicated formula involving high-school class rankings and standardized test scores. If anyone out there can elaborate on exactly what this "complicated fomula" is, it would be of interest. It can't be any more complicated than PWR, and is probably not as secret as bonus points foby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Wow!!! - 20 years ago
The game I remember well in the Bruins series was Game 2. The Canadiens were down 5-1 in the 2nd, and Ken was making great save after great save. He's down 5-1 and I'm thinking that I've never seen a goalie make so many great saves in a game. The Habs come back to win 7-5 and even the series. and despite the five goals, everyone suddenly realizes that the guy in nets is the difference. Note:by jkahn - Hockey
Re: Games History Upgrade - 20 years ago
Greg, Thanks for putting this all together. In the '69 NCAA championship, the line score reads North Dakota where it should be Denver. Also, I'm 99.9% sure that the Denver goalie was Gerry Powers, not McRae - who played for Mich. Tech and then the Leafs for a while.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: 63 - 20 years ago
At least from '66-'67 to '71-'72 they were ten minutes. I don't know when it changed to five. It seems that ten minute overtimes were used for playoff games up through 1990. Seeby jkahn - Hockey
Re: 63 - 21 years ago
1/9/71, 5-4, Harvard That one resulted in some highly positive deja vu this year for me. As in this year's ECAC final, we had tied that game after pulling the goalie. Kevin Pettit tied it on a deflection of a Ron Simpson slapshot and we won it in overtime on a shorthanded goal by Jim Higgs. The Yale loss before the streak started would have been the previous overtime game at Lynah.by jkahn - Hockey

Re: Fun Fact - 21 years ago
From long ago through the '70's, the system was two referees (no linesmen) with the referees also doing the lines. Bill Cleary, IMHO, was the worst - he clearly seemed to hate Cornell. In the '67 championship game he called two phantom majors on Cornell in the 3rd period, trying to get BU back in the game. There was certainly resentment of Cornell from other ECAC opponents, particularly the Bby jkahn - Hockey

Canada wins gold, 3-2 over Sweden, on an Anson Carter overtime goal. I guess the in the topic should be considered foreshadowing.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: empty net goals - 21 years ago
There was a game we lost to Brown in the '70's in which we pulled the goalie down 3 goalies and scored twice and almost got the tying goal. It was one of the years when PBS was doing some Saturday afternoon TV games. I've also seen teams tie it from two down several times in the pros. There was one season in the mid or late '70's (I was living in New Hampshire then) when the Bruins got tied twby jkahn - Hockey
Re: empty net goals - 21 years ago
This is strictly from memory, so it's possible that the scores might be off a little, but I think it's pretty damn close to accurate. Going into the last day of the '69-'70 season, the Rangers were two points behind Montreal for the last playoff spot, and also needed to outscore the Habs by 5 goals to win the tiebreaker. The Rangers beat the Wings 9-3 in an afternoon game. In a night game whicby jkahn - Hockey
Re: History of the Faithful - 21 years ago
First over the glass - Kevin Pettit scores in overtime at Boston Garden to beat BU 3-2 in the '69 ECAC semi-final. One of the Cornell sections was right down by the boards, pretty much center ice, and a few dozen of us went spontaneously over the boards.by jkahn - Hockey
Re: NYC Frozen Four gathering - INFO - 21 years ago
Note to Matt: Rich S. is a long-time contributor to Cornell hockey discussion and avid college hockey fan. He should be most welcome. Also, if his school, Clarkson, was there instead of us, I'd be rooting hard for them; hopefully he feels the same way. But even if that's not the case, welcome him in.by jkahn - Hockey

Re: Providence Roll Call - 21 years ago
Changed my hotel from the Fairfield at the airport to the Providence Marriott downtown - both were using Marriott Rewards certificates so I don't know the pricing. Interestingly, the Marriott had told me earlier in the week that they had no availability, so some rooms that might have been on hold for the tournament may have gotten released.by jkahn - Hockey
Friday Night Faithful in Providence - 21 years ago
Is there a gathering spot for the Lynah Faithful on Friday night to watch the UNH - St. Cloud game on NESN? I'll be landing around 6:50 pm and would prefer to meet other Faithful rather than watching the game solo in my hotel by the airport. Post Edited (03-27-03 19:07)by jkahn - Hockey
TV in Chicago - 21 years ago
Got this e-mail this afternoon regarding TV in Chicago. I'm heading for Providence myself, but figured others in the Chicago area who are not on whatever e-mail list they used (perhaps the CAAAN list) would want to know: Dear Fellow Cornellians, I am sure some of you may be aware that Cornell's men's hockey team has qualified for the NCAA hockey tournament this year. Right now, the Big Red is rby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Providence Tickets - 21 years ago
Checked on my tickets again, they are 118 E 5-6. I asked how the rows were lettered, and was told (don't know how accurate this is) that they start with DD and go to LL, then start over with A. She then added, "so E is about 15 rows up," which is almost in agreement with the lettering system she gave me, so I presume it's close to accurate.by jkahn - Hockey

Re: You are the Committee - 21 years ago
See Adam Wodon's well written article on the seeding procedure at: Of course, if the committee had read this thread Sunday morning, see JTW's post at 23:01 and mine at 23:59 Saturday, all this angst could have been avoided. How do we get JTW, Adam or someone who understands math on the committee - perhaps as a consultant? This is not sour grapes, and the committee needs to understand that. Lby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Providence Roll Call - 21 years ago
I'd love to meet some of the regulars from both ELF and the game chat (where I'm jeff70). Is there anywhere the very Faithful will be hanging out Friday night, perhaps watching the second game from Worcester when I arrive? It would be great trading hockey stories with Faithful from any era. I'm flying up Friday, Southwest from Chicago, landing at 6:50pm. I tried using United mileage, but theyby jkahn - Hockey
Re: Tickets In Providence - 21 years ago
Just ordered two from 401-865-4672. They won't guarantee any specific seating location, but will take requests such as "near the Cornell section." I was on hold for about 15 minutes, so be prepared to wait. Post Edited (03-24-03 09:35)by jkahn - Hockey
Re: You are the Committee - 21 years ago
Based on the input above from John, here's a shot at the regionals: Worcester: Cornell, BU, St. Cloud, Mercyhurst (or Q'pac) Providence: UNH, Maine, Harvard, Minn. St. Ann Arbor: CC, BC, Mich., Wayne St. Minn: Minn., Ferris St., UND, Ohio St. John, hopefully the committee will only look at comparisons between tournament teams - it would be easier if "you are the committee" Postby jkahn - Hockey
Re: You are the Committee - 21 years ago
Things are looking tricky for the committee. Harvard and Minn. St. are tied for 12th, with Harvard winning tiebreaker. St. Cloud is 14th. With CC and Minn. both #1 seeds, there are three possibilities. 1) Cornell will have to play a WCHA team to avoid a WCHA intra-conference first round match-up, 2) #1 Cornell will be given a better match-up, by switching Harv. and Minn. St.- although that wby jkahn - Hockey
