Re: Promotion of this site - 22 years ago
Grady often came here to solicit questions for the coaches corner broadcasts. My sense is they are no longer encouraging call-ins or email questions. Perhaps a legacy of this year's awful football season?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

I hadn't heard that Ned passed on.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Own Horn - 22 years ago
Robb's exactly right. I must have read 5,000 pages of Churchill in the past year and I still stumbled over that plural verb every time.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Thanks, Patrick, you're right. I shoulda known better.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

I'm guessing the department rankings are taken from the latest National Research Council survey, which ranks graduate departments. Having spent the better part of 20 years working either with or for colleges and universities, I would say these are the *only* rankings to which faculty, department chairs, and deans give any real credence.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

If Grady mentioned his name once he mentioned it a thousand times. Sounded to me like he was all over the ice nearly all of the time!by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: 1980 Hockey Team - 22 years ago
Very true, apple. Probably the best indication anyone had of the strength of the Russians--at least to those who paid attention to such things in 1960--was their 18-1 win over Riley's US team the year before.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: 1980 Hockey Team - 22 years ago
The 1960 gold medal hockey team was honored at a dinner in Salt Lake City last night. Jack Riley, their coach, lives across the street. He can be ornery--kinda like Ned--and has always felt his team's accomplishment is undervalued compared with the 1980 team. Likely the result of TV, Al Michaels, and the increased visibility of hockey in the US in 1980 (only the six original NHL teams in 1960by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Offtopic: Big Red Hoops - 22 years ago
I had the same concern. The loss of Vandenberg--expected to be the top "big man" even though a frosh--to an earlier injury didn't help. I hope Donahue can hold things together until the young 'uns get more experience. I think Jake Rohe already jumped ship.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Offtopic: Big Red Hoops - 22 years ago
I had the same queston, Rich. From yesterday's Ithaca Journal: "The Big Red had to juggle its line up after starting guard Ka'Ron Barnes broke a bone in his left hand during practice on Tuesday." Tough break--literally. He apparently is a good one--good kid, too.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Yale (Saturday) - 22 years ago
My sense is that Murray deserves mucho credit for the winning goal--barging down the right wing with the puck like a man possessed to set up Sam. But then, he should have been possessed, having handed Klema Yale's second goal.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Polls and the Beanpot - 22 years ago
I suspect the polls will be taken before the Beanpot final is completed, so it probably will not affect this week's poll. And it will take some miracle for BC to win the Beanpot, since they were beaten in the first round last Monday and BU is facing my wife's Northeastern Huskies for the championship.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

John, do the cross-the-border stations make a fuss over the Mexican bobsled team?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Solid effort up and down the roster. Need it again tomorrow night against Old Eli.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
What did we do to deserve him? - 22 years ago
And I recall fondly that Clarkson lost the big one (as usual) that year to the Big Red. And, for the second year in a row, Todd White--who failed to win the Hobey--was shut out on the "big ice" by Cornell's defense, and all the bush league noisemakers brought by the Clarkson crowd to make up for their mute fans were silenced. Yes, Richie-boy, I do remember that fondly. Hope you werby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Here's another of his fine, positive postings about Cornell, Rich Hovorka. Ain't it great?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Tiresome baloney - 22 years ago
Note no mention whatsoever that this shirt was specially made for the wonderful, squeaky-clean Clarkson band to wear. Cornell is foul; Clarkson is perfect. Jackass extraordinaire. Even JTW is catching on to you now, Richie-boy!by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Fish poll - 22 years ago
How is it the fish poll results keep increasing while the only poll I get to see has to do with a crotchety fart?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Daily Sun - 22 years ago
Thanks, Charles. Here's another vote for the wraps.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

"Statistical weirdness" - 22 years ago
The explanation is that you're literally adding apples with oranges in coming up with a total percentage. Even the worst penalty-killing team will have a much higher percentage of success killing penalties than the best power-play team will have scoring on a penalty. So, if a team has more PK opportunities than PP opportunities (e.g., RPI), it will inflate the total percentage, especially if thby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
