Re: Tonight's game v. Penn State - 9 years ago
FWIW, supposedly RPI was invited to the ECAC Holiday Festival several times but could not go because of conflicts with its own tourney. The one year they went, the RPI Tourney was after New Year's Day.Right after they turned down their Ivy League invite, eh?by Robb - Hockey

Johnny 5 Could be a slugfest!! Ya think? 153 total minutes in a 2-game series is pretty impressive, but I'm sure we can do better. Fight, Maim, Kill!by Robb - Hockey
Re: Attendance at Lynah - 9 years ago
Jeff Hopkins '82 Most of my favorite memories at Lynah were associated with taunts of individual players, such as Princeton's Ray "Bozo" Casey or Clarkson's Brian "Beaver" Cleaver. It the admin has truly outlawed that kind of interplay, and I have no proof that they have other than the hearsay on this board, then they've destroyed the Lynah experience for the students as leasby Robb - Hockey
Re: Big Red Stuns Stanford - 9 years ago
ugarteI think what they really mean by "wonky grid" is that manhattan isn't actually on the north/south axis. I haven't measured it myself but I'll bet Manhattan is "at a 29 degree angle". I don't think so. Look at the picture in the story George64 posted with the Cornell Tech logo drawn in "neon lights" over top of the NYC satellite image - they're pretty clearlyby Robb - John Spencer Is Dead

Jim HylaExcept that we're not doing the same thing as years ago. His style has openned up more.Maybe that's the problem. We're the tallest roster in the NCAA by half an inch, when the range from #2 to #59 is only 2.1". If Schafer really is trying to open up the style, do we really have the right roster for that? There's something to be said for trying to adapt to a style, but there's alby Robb - Hockey

Scersk '97 So, who had Union starting 0-3 in the office pool?No worries; they just need to run the table to better their record from last year (18-3-1).by Robb - Hockey
Re: Friday: Princeton 2 Cornell 1 - 9 years ago
Trotsky billhoward Cornell had a lot of near-scoring chances that will be converted to goals when the offense gels. Must have been a dozen passes for deflections that didn't get on net. Colton Phinney did an amazing job in goal for Princeton: 40 saves. This game is going to hurt at the end of February when we look back on how we could have had 2 more points in the ECAC standings. In the CHN boxscore, it shows our 3rd goal as "COR 3-2 6x6 GW LL" What does LL stand for? I've been watching hockey a long time, but can't figure that one out.by Robb - Hockey
Re: Big Red Pumpkin Regatta - 9 years ago
May as well take the opportunity to remember my great uncle Bernard Potter '43, former trustee and director of the NY State Fair. One of the many things he enjoyed in retirement was growing giant pumpkins - he's one of the growers featured in Lords of the Gourd.by Robb - Other Sports
Re: Frozen Four Finest - 9 years ago
Larry72 Uh no we didn't! In 1969-70 Cornell hockey went 29-0-0. There is other team in college hockey to ever come close to that record.Hate to break it to you, but 42-1-2 (.956) is awfully close to 29-0 (1.000). And...the only team to beat them was: BU. Screw those guys.by Robb - Hockey
Re: Cornell's 13th president: Elizabeth Garrett, USC - 9 years ago
Kyle Rose TimV She probably won't mind the music as much as she'll mind the football. Maybe she can get Pete Carroll after he decides he's had enough of the NFL. Of course, we're more likely to end up with Rich Kotite, who would still probably improve Cornell's program.Or Lane Kiffin....by Robb - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: The Ithaca Voice top 10 Cornell hockey players - 9 years ago
Al DeFlorio Lodboa and Nethery should be in the top five. I've written Stein. Those were the two who raised my eyebrows as well. 2.44 pts/game doesn't get you ahead of Murray? Guess it must have been the (offensive) System back then, too!by Robb - Hockey
Re: Hockey Videos - 9 years ago
Towerroad LaJollaRed Josh '99 TimV Love summer, but miss hockey. Cruising You Tube, there's a lot of fun videos. Found this one on Colgate Hockey. No mention of free pizza though. Anybody got other fun ones from opposing schools?Just because something is obvious, doesn't mean it's not awesome. I was hoping someone would find that. Re: 2014-15 Schedule - 9 years ago
Just made my plane reservations to get to Ithaca....in September. My family is just not good at this... If it's hockey season, the wedding will inevitably be someplace else. When we finally get an Ithaca wedding on the rotation, nope, not during hockey season! (and yes, many of you know that *I* carry that gene, too!)by Robb - Hockey
Re: USA in the World Cup - 9 years ago
cbuck I totally thought of the '09 lax game. I feel like that game has prepared me well for late-game implosions by any team I am rooting for. Let's just hope US-GER doesn't turn out like OT of the '09 game. You know what else reminds me of the 2009 lax game??? And by a team wearing orange, no less.by Robb - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Alumni in the pros - May 2014 - 9 years ago
ftyuv I rooted for the Kings a few years ago, because they were the 8-seed that was supposed to get crushed, and Cinderella stories are nice. Now they're just a team with a boring color scheme from a city that doesn't deserve to exist. Go Rangers-by-default!Hey now!by Robb - Hockey
Re: Recruits 2014-Hayden Stewart - 9 years ago
jkahn Tschantz plans to room with Ice teammate Hayden Stewart, a goalie. Other than ajh258's initial post in February, there hasn't been much discussion here on Stewart. Here are a couple of articles. Per the stats page, Stewart played in 14 of their 27 games and put up a 1.29 GAA and .945 %. On the other hand, their other goalie (headed to MSU-Mankato) played in 42 games, includingby Robb - Hockey
Re: NCAA lax - Cornell-Maryland - 10 years ago
ugarteTotal defensive breakdown (or, if you want to be generous, excellent pass across the field to a guy in space), Maryland with the GWG with 2 seconds remaining.Yep. Should have played straight man-to-man with only 9 seconds on the clock. Instead, seemingly every defender got sucked into the ball, resulting in an easy tic-tac-score. Terrible defensive fundamentals - the ball can't score; yoby Robb - Other Sports
Re: New Rules? - 10 years ago
RichH billhoward A 1-0 title game might be exciting for purist hockey fans but a steady diet of low-scoring games is not going to move the sport forward if "forward" means attracting lowest common denominator American fans. FYP. If basketball still had 11-6 games, I might be interested in watching more than the last 15 seconds, which can take 20 minutes anyway. Put me down as anothby Robb - Hockey
Re: Who are these guys? - 10 years ago
Larry72 Some of us still work for a living and today is tax day. Sorry to be late to the party! However YES - all the names are correct. I believe Sol Goldberg from Cornell Communications took that particular photo.Sorry, no bonus points can be awarded unless you can also correctly identify the make and model of camera used, the film speed, and the f-stop setting. Re: Cornell lacrosse 2014 Ivy tourney odds - 10 years ago
billhoward Penn beat Harvard in overtime so Cornell and Harvard are tied for the Ivy lead and right to host the tournament except the first tie is broken by the head to head winner, Harvard. Cornell is likely to win out (?) based on the relative standings of the Ivy League. Harvard should beat Princeton; let's hope Yale takes down host Harvard April 26 to create a 4-way tie at 4-2 that we'd win.by Robb - Other Sports

Dafatone MattS Kyle Rose Jim Hyla Towerroad Trotsky Shorter poll: A. "Don't Know" B. "I have deluded myself into thinking I am competent to answer this question." It is going to be a long offseason we have to occupy ourselves somehow. I may delude myself that I am competent to answer the question but I have no allusions about this discussion having any impact on theby Robb - Hockey
Re: Can offensive skills be taught at this level? - 10 years ago
I agree with the general trend of the conversation. Offensive systems can be taught and set plays can be learned by rote, but stickhandling, quickness, the confidence to look up to be able to see the cutters instead of looking down at the puck, etc must be learned over thousands of hours spent on the ice. Those sorts of things are not likely to improve drastically during 4 years of college.by Robb - Hockey
Re: What is your definition of a Successful Season - 10 years ago
Trotsky Probably not a lot of high-powered mathematical skill on the NCAA Rules Committee. We don't need high-powered mathematicians on the rules committee - just for the members to be self-aware enough to know that they aren't.by Robb - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Should He Go 2014 - 10 years ago
BearLover Rita KeithK BearLover Trotsky I don't see anybody in the current landscape who fits, and I see the job as Mike's until he decides to retire. He's about 50, so that's not going to be for a long time. His contract expires in 2016. At which time it will most likely be renewed. I think there is zero chance that he would be forced out if the team continues to have seasons like the last oneby Robb - Hockey
