Your no-school-spirit, I'm-just-doing-time-here-while-waiting-to-get-a-job-at-daddy's-company, gimme-another-A-because-I-was-accepted, "students" don't show up to games now - and it's FREE. Re: It has begun (or ended). - 19 years ago
I agree, Keith - neither side wants a truly free market. I just think a free-market league would would be an interesting experiment. In business, you always want to completely crush your competition. In a sports league, at some point, that becomes counterproductive, because as your competitors can't compete, interest in your own product will decline (and many of your competitors would jusby Robb - Hockey

And you call yourself a Yankee fan? Who cares about competitive balance or the fan enjoyment for the other 29 teams....by Robb - Hockey
Re: It has begun (or ended). - 19 years ago
I don't understand what's wrong with a complete free market. If an owner is a big enough egomaniac to want a winning team, then he should be willing to pay for it. If not, he can cut back and be merely competitive (or just suck). The owners want to have their cake and eat it, too - the ability to win consistently AND be profitable consistently. Of course that would be nice, but why should theby Robb - Hockey
Re: Lynah East 2005 - Single Tickets on Sale 9/20 - 19 years ago
The only "problem" they have with that particular situation is that their own fans suck. From this, I would surmise that they are still scratching their heads and trying to figure out a new diabolical scheme to prevent Cornellians from buying up the tickets long enough that their otherwise pathetically slow demand results in a few tickets being sold to Harvard fans. Whatever they coby Robb - Hockey
Re: Lynah East 2005 - Single Tickets on Sale 9/20 - 19 years ago
Based on my past experiences, you're WAY better off calling the Harvard ticket office with your Sucks ID number in hand. A friend's grandmother who was a Harvard alum's widow was able to buy 7 tickets for us (a few years ago), but they wouldn't give random callers the time of day. I don't know if Harvard-connected people (I know, redundant) can get truly unlimited tickets or not. But if they cby Robb - Hockey

Re: Ivy league Restrictions - 19 years ago
Also, there is a limit to the number of "required" hours per week for practice - I think the Ivy limit was actually the same as the NCAA limit in this case (in the early '90s when I was an athlete), but I can't remember the number. I know we practiced from 4:30-7 five nights per week, plus an individual lesson for another hour or so - roughly 14 hours per week, but I can't remember ifby Robb - Hockey

Games at MSU - 19 years ago
Just perusing the potential dates for me to leave Texas for a Cornell hockey fix, and some things just don't line up for me very well this year (e.g. the home Harvard/Brown games are a week after I run the Marine Corps Marathon). Sooo - I'm halfway considering taking a jaunt up to East Lansing for the MSU games instead, partly on the grounds that it'd be fun to check out a new arena - it would bby Robb - Hockey
Re: Jessiman Staying at Dartmouth - 19 years ago
You guys are obviously only looking at anecdotal evidence from the 1 or 2 times you saw him play. He averaged 1.38 points per game as a freshman, and right at 1 point per game as a more heavily targeted sophomore. May Cornell be cursed with 5-6 forwards as "overrated" as Jessiman!by Robb - Hockey
Re: Whos hot and whos not... - 19 years ago
Sad but true. I wish the ECAC had enough strong teams that we could say, "We'll be strong enough to qualify for an NCAA bid, but probably won't win in Albany," instead (like the 4-6 place WCHA teams say today).by Robb - Hockey
Re: Outlook for 04-05 - 19 years ago
Forget the team and the recruits. One look at our non-conference schedule and you can tell that it's going to be iffy again this year. Last year, we finished 2nd in the league with 29 points. That's unlikely to go up by a significant amount, and the ECAC's RPI (the ratings index, not the school) will be crappy as usual. Our 7 non-conference games are Army, Sacred Heart, Michigan State (twice)by Robb - Hockey
Laura Strange to ECAC Office - 19 years ago
According to the ECAC website, Steve Hagwell has hired Laura Strange to the position of ECAC Assistant Commissioner for Marketing and Communications. Does this mean that we'll get more ECAC games on TV..........but they'll all be pay-per-view?by Robb - Hockey
Re: An Idea for Schafer - 19 years ago
Man, I'm glad Facetimer didn't live back in the 1700's - would've really made the founding fathers question the wisdom of that "free speech" thing! If there's every been anyone who's deserved to be pilloried for their speech, it's gotta be Facetimer.by Robb - Hockey

Re: Townie Season Tickets - 19 years ago
Using time to measure the length of a list is quite misleading - a much better metric is your number in line... According to the conversation my father (who's on the list ahead of you! ) had with the ticket manager, ZERO season tickets changed hands during the summer of '03 (following the Frozen Four appearance). Anyone really think it will be an infinite number of years until the next personby Robb - Hockey
Re: Schafer - 19 years ago
Hockey *players* are probably even more bi-modal than the fans - you've got the rural kids who grow up skating on the backyard ponds for free, and you've got the suburban kids whose parents can afford both the 4 am ice time and the SUV to get them there. You just don't see that many blue-collar, salt-of-the-earth, middle class wage-earners' kids playing hockey....by Robb - Hockey

Re: [OT] What Is the Rarest Single-Game Feat in Sports? - 19 years ago
Yeah, but UNC women's soccer also won 16 championships in those 22 years. Why is there so little parity in women's sports (see UNC soccer, UConn/UT basketball, UMinn/UMD in hockey, etc)?by Robb - Hockey

According to that article, both Knoepfli and Cook had game winning goals vs. Clarkson in the playoffs - sweet!! Somehow, I thought we lost that series so I didn't bother watching the games in Albany - how'd we do??by Robb - Hockey
