Re: You are the Committee - 21 years ago
I think it is only a matter of time before John is appointed to the committtee. The entire college hockey world recognizes him as the statistical authority of record.by CrazyLarry - Hockey

But, two other analysts picked the Big Red to win it all...by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Providence Roll Call - 21 years ago
I will be there. I am visiting Hahvahd (sucks) as a possible grad school option on Wed/Thurs (I like the thought of Harvard paying for me to travel to watch Cornell hockey). I left Friday free not knowing if we'd be in Worcester or Providence. So, I am asking: 1) Anybody willing to get me a ride from Cambridge to Providence on Saturday? 2) Anybody going to Worcester on Friday and willing toby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Placid v Albany - 21 years ago
My chief complaint was a complete lack of decent food options around the arena during/after game times. Placid had lots of places that were good eateries open within walking distance. Albany was a bit of a ghost town around the rink, and the food options were that late night PizzaBar and Jillians, where the food quality was weak. Also, there just wasn't an atmosphere of hockey outside the rinkby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: WTF??? - 21 years ago
I've seen some comments on the USCHO page that Mankato lacks depth, they run long shifts, and don't go more than 2 lines deep, really. Since we're physical, this should be a big problem for the Mavericks. Also, their number one goalie got pulled in the consy yesterday. Could mean some trouble (or just a lack of focus in the consy). What time would the Sunday game be? I can't find that anywhere.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Thursday scores - 21 years ago
Actually, more than a boost. It almost guarantees we will be the biggest beneficiaries of the mythical bonus. OSU is a lock for top 15 in RPI now, as far as I can tell.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: You are the Committee - 21 years ago
Sure I can. I make them be what I want to help my favorite team, just like the committee is going to do...by CrazyLarry - Hockey
You are the Committee - 21 years ago
USCHO has John's YATC script, but once you plug in the results, you don't seem to actually get to be the Committee, as in years past, choosing a bubble, etc. Am I missing something?by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: PWR with "good wins" bonus - 21 years ago
If OSU loses and drops out of the top 15 in RPI then we might get hurt by it.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Win out or get screwed for the Big Red - 21 years ago
There's another possibility. If Minnesota beats CC, they'll flip their comparison with Maine based on COP. If Maine also flips the comparison with BU via the Mercyhurst/QU route, then Minn,Maine,BU will all be tied for the #1 seed (Minnestoa's loss to Dartmouth should become irrelevant by the time we get to this point, so I'm returning to them that point in the PWR). Minnesota will almost sureby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Win out or get screwed for the Big Red - 21 years ago
Good point, Keith. HE does have a balanced schedule. Of course, no one is arguing BU is a higher seeded team than UNH, it only comes out that way because of the hosting thing. The real question is, should BU be a #1 over, say, Minnesota? BU's 5th place finish is irrelevant to that question, except in the indirect (and rather vague) information it reveals about BU's wins and losses during theby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Win out or get screwed for the Big Red - 21 years ago
It is a specious argument. Conference games count every bit as much as other games. So do non-conference games. I think all games are on equal footing as far as determining how good a team is. BU lost 3.5 more conference games, their non-conference performance makes up for it, I see no problem there. The problem here isn't BU's #1 seed, it's the fact they are hosting their regional and get tby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: NCAA scheduling changes? - 21 years ago
No, the NCAA talks about 'seeding' the top 25% of teams in the tourney and ignoring regionalization for those teams. Everybody else would be regionalized, but 3 eastern #1s means someone goes west to allow them to reap the 'rewards' of their 1 seed. In theory, good, in practice, with the host team bit, it's a bit dubious.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Win out or get screwed for the Big Red - 21 years ago
I can't believe that Tom has fallen for this specious 'BU is not a #1 seed because they finished 5th' argument. BU played a killer non-conference schedule (#1 SOS by KRACH and not by a little, either) and did very well in it. Their 5th place was a close 5th place, and then they won 3 playoff games against good teams. A #1 seed is not a ridiculous result. A #2 seed is certainly justified (KRAby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: 3/10 Polls - 21 years ago
I've always been curious where the BCS finds 7 different rating systems that don't account for scores. Is a Bradley-Terry computation among them? The object of a sports contest is to win the game. In calculating the performances of teams (and we're talking about evaluating their performance during the season, NOT their potential or whatever else) wins and losses are the important thing. Re: Impending hysteria for NCAA tickets... - 21 years ago
So, buy for both eastern regionals. It ought to be possible to see many of the games... Unless we get sent west (G-d forbid).by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Giant NC$$ Mess - 21 years ago
People are getting very hung up on the possibility of WCHA intraconference matchups. In the past, such machups were occassionally unavoidable. Usually, the committee then explained their choice to allow such a matchup by noting that it was not a rematch of a conference tournament game. If lots of WCHA teams get in, some of them won't have played in the WCHA tourney, and I'd expect the NCAA toby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Bracketology article - 21 years ago
Its a snapshot in time, and the only reason for drawing Providence is that two WCHA teams are #4 seeds and 2 are #1 seeds. That will not persist, it can't, some of them have to lose. So, I wouldn't be too concerned yet. I'm not big on these IFSET things. The season doesn't end today, so no use telling me what the seedings are if it did. Maybe in two weeks, it'd mean a little more.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Most likely upset this weekend - 21 years ago
Consider yourself flagellated. I take no chances. Also, I have a lot of faith that if we continue to win, the PWR numbers will shake themselves out in the end. Teams will get upset. There are teams down in the 12-16 range that are deperate for wins. There will be upsets, there always are. And teams will lose because someone has to lose all these games that will be played in the next 3 weeby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Most likely upset this weekend - 21 years ago
You're all nuts. The best way to improve national strength is to WIN 4 games. Only 3 other teams will do that. Everyone else will incur at least one loss, many teams will get two. Winning 4 games is what you want to do. Given that, I want the easiest competition available. If that's Princeton (I don't think it is, actually), bring 'em on.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Sunday PWR: Big Doin's - 21 years ago
Remember, a lot of those teams on the bubble have to play each other in the playoffs. Some of them will lose because someone has to. So, just the fact these games are played should provide the help the Big Green will need. If Dartmouth wins 3 games in the ECAC tourney, their non-conference wins set them up well in the PWR. And a game against Cornell would help their RPI quite a bit. Harvardby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Sunday PWR: Big Doin's - 21 years ago
RedAR makes a good point. The way I see it, winning out (without a Conf Championship) has a pretty decent chance of getting Dartmouth into the tourney. They win a few comparisons against the other bubble teams. I think their chances are better than Harvard's, actually.by CrazyLarry - Hockey

I will be there, though I'll save the face paint for later. Dinner sounds good.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Stupid Selection Committee Tricks? - 21 years ago
This is ridiculous. They already have a criteria for "Big Wins" in the PWR. Clearly, the committee has realized they can be replaced with John Whelan's script, and they decided that reflected on their manhood or something. Clearly this hurts ECAC teams which play fewer nc games, Ivies especially. And if the goal was to influence nc game scheduling - why announce at the END of theby CrazyLarry - Hockey
