Re: Thanks, John - 19 years ago
Great stuff, Scott. I'll especially second the thought about meeting John at that very memorable SIT.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Anyone see ND/WI last night? - 19 years ago
I've watched a lot of WCHA these last few weeks, and I've noticed the same things - the teams are fast, and move the puck very well through the neutral zone. However, the defenses are generally shaky, lots of turnovers in the d-zone. Generally, the games are not that physical, though the UW-UND game seemed an exception. BTW, watching CC-MN last night, CC is good. Really good. But, we wonby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Analyzing the RPI Bonus - 19 years ago
OK. I've gone and answered my own question and done an anlysis of the '03 and '04 tourney selection to determine the constraints on the bonuses. I used the following model: HOME = h NEUTRAL = h + d ROAD = h + 2d i.e. The bonus values are equally spaced. I suspect this is true, and its the way everyone always talks about the bonuses. I used the following additional constraint: h <by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Letter to CSTV about ECACHL Tournament Coverage - 19 years ago
If you want to establish yourself as a place to go for College Sports, and on the first day of the NCAA Basketball tourney, you're not showing/talking about or somehow dealing with that, people are going to write you off. The potential for that is pretty severe, and if I were CSTV I'd definitely want to make sure it doesn't happen.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Bracketology Sunday - 19 years ago
The UVM-MichState Comparison, crucial in deciding whether UVM or the Badgers are last in in this scenario, seems to hinge on RPI, and thus the bonus, in this scenario. So, not only do the games have to be right, the bonus does, too. So, unlikely doesn't begin to describe it. Still fun to think about.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: New Bracketology: We Get Hosed - 19 years ago
Sadly, I don't think it changes the situation wrt MN. They still need to lose twice for us to flip the comparison. However, based on watching Mankato-MN last night, if Mankato gets any goaltending, that could happen. Yes, it was 7-2, but it shouldn't have been. Man, Mankato goalie is the worst thing I ever saw. He sucks! He's not a sieve, he's a Hula Hoop! Argggh... Oops, I forgot we plby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: New Bracketology: We Get Hosed - 19 years ago
At least DU and MN would play each other in the WCHA semis. Someone will lose. We also get a slight edge over DU in bonus points (1 N vs. 1 H) Also, does one of our AHA opponents winning the tourney there help us in the TUC category enough? It'd get us one extra win there, but probably not only us. Checking, the only other top team helped would be CC, if Quinnipiac wins the AHA. That woulby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: New Bracketology: We Get Hosed - 19 years ago
Yeah, but, Jason does some WEIRD things. For one, he refuses to shuffle the 4 seeds to give the overall #1 a matchup against the #13 seed. That's ridiculous, because #1a vs. 4a or 4b is one thing we KNOW the comittee will do, from experience. Good grief. Also, Jason seems to ignore possible secondary effects (i.e. UAA becoming a TUC, BG dropping from one) in his Q&A part, which is theby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: [OT] Blue Ice - 19 years ago
The colored ice seems a bit bush league, but the point about glare isn't a bad one. Makes sense. If it isn't too gaudy I could probably learn to like it. I love hockey, but I'm not a traditionalist at all. People should consider changing the game, as long as the key is to emphasize the special skill required to play a very physical game on ice. The current NHL variety of the game is prettyby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: RPI senior Economakos signs with The Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the ECHL - 19 years ago
Yes, but the voting had almost surely been completed by the time Sejna left school. Not the case here. Of course, not many guys in Hobey consideration are likely to have their season over at this point...by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Tuesday at the Rink - 19 years ago
I think Red was trying to make a joke with the NH comment. At least he was honest about what they do, I guess. It'd be nice if it wasn't like this, though. Along the same lines, the last time we played a WCHA team in the RS was like 6 years ago. That just sucks for making this a national sport.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: National Flavor to the Tournament - 19 years ago
But why that particular mystery? Seems a strange and bizarre thing to keep secret. But, I agree Josh, the people probably want to appear to have some mystery. Still, the way the TV thing is presented, the average viewer wouldn't be aware there wasn't any mystery.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: National Flavor to the Tournament - 19 years ago
If there are people who know the bonus, why is it being kept secret. The committee seems generally open to revealing their process. I don't really understand the secrecy. But, not understanding the secrecy is a far cry from suggesting something underhanded about it. I shouldn't have done that, I know better. That said, every time we think we understand the entire process, and feel secure aby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: National Flavor to the Tournament - 19 years ago
I realize that Adam has actually talked to the folks who do the process. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, and I love that the process is nearly transparent (we're not in the room, and the selection meeting is not broadcast live, that would be completely transparent). I just point ot that we haven't seen what happens when competetive equity and attendance are not consistent. (I'm using attendanby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: National Flavor to the Tournament - 19 years ago
Nobody thinks that it might mean something that all the Eastern schools stayed East? That all the Boston schools (I include UNH in this) have stayed East both years? I would be utterly shocked to find BC or UNH head West, even if Minn was #1 and BC or UNH were #8 (I note that I can't remember which schools are technically hosts this year, I'm pretty sure BU is). In fact, I'd be surprised to seby CrazyLarry - Hockey

I think I speak for all Cornell fans when I say, "damn!" I also wish Dave the best as he moves to the professional ranks.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: OT: NFL Draft/TMQ rip on Hahvahd - 21 years ago
TMQ is the worlds' greatest sports column, present company excepted. It is truly great stuff, the intellectual's football column. The two draft columns were nice to assuage the offseason withdrawal.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: More Best Moments... - 21 years ago
I'd kill to have seen that moment where the team scrambled for instruments and played around with them. That's fanatastic. My favorite memory along those lines was the year we went to PRACTICE at the start of the season. Chartrand was writing a column for the Sun that year and discussing how psyched up everyone was, noted that the band had come to their practice.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Please Nominate Your 2003 TBRW Awards - 21 years ago
1. Peter Natyshak Award, Career Improvement Sam Paolini, hands down, though I must confess the very first time I saw him play (Princeton his freshman year) I went home asking myself why this guy wasn't dressed most of the time, he was the best player on the ice that night to my eye. 2. Randy MacFarlane Award, Transcendent Beauty and Skating Prowess Not much of this got displayed this year, butby CrazyLarry - Hockey

Re: SECTION A FAITHFUL NEED HELP - 21 years ago
I was at that event with a radio in my suit jacket pocket and an unusually small bladder that evening. Have to say, I'd do it differently if I could have it over. Of course, moving a saturday event at this point could be considered woofing, and I wouldn't want to encourage that sort of thing...by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: SportsCenter Clip of BC Game Winning Goal - 21 years ago
That's what made it such a great play, McRae had to wait for the zone to be cleared and was able to hold on to the puck, enter the zone with speed and then score the goal from a ridiculous angle. Just a great heads-up individual effort.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Frozen Four - 21 years ago
I'm curious what the possibility is for somehow collecting critical mass of Cornell fans in one place given we're all getting tickets from anywhere we can find them. For those who've been to previous FFs, is there the possibility you could try to trade with fans from other schools to get ourselves in one place, wherever that might be? I'm just curious, I don't want to be a lonely facepainted foby CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Sportscenter - 21 years ago
Actually, I think it is a 'conspiracy.' There are several notable Cornell alums around ESPN, Dick Schaap was, Bill Pidto, I think Jeremy Schaap as well. I wouldn't be surprised if they are nudging the story. Much like back in the day (1995?) when our undefeated football team got a mention every Sunday night from Keith Olberman when the polls were released.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: WTF??? - 21 years ago
I actually have newspaper clippings from our game at Michigan in 1997 specifically disucssing Michigan's lifting of our cheers from the '91 NCAA series.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: Does Anybody Know How Ticket Sales are Going? - 21 years ago
Oh, don't worry about ticket location. We will all squeeze in, especially if the place isn't sold out, and I doubt it will. So, don't agonize, find the Cornell section and squeeze in nearby.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
Re: NCAA TV - 21 years ago
Well, if you live really far away you could be forgiven by whatever power grants such things But, if you are a student in Ithaca - Get yourself to the Dunk!!! No excuses. Find a way. Never know when you'll have another chance like this. Don't take it for granted. We're not going to be ranked #1 at season's end every year.by CrazyLarry - Hockey
