Re: Cornell lacrosse 2024 - 3 months ago
billhoward Many are geographically challenged. A fraternity brother from Five Towns on the Island met a woman at one of our mixers: He: So, where you from? She: White Plains He: Upstate, huh. I'm not sure he was joking or serious. Every place north of The Bronx is Upstate.by George64 - Other Sports
Re: Home Ice - 3 months ago
Swampy From "The Poison Ivy in the Ivy League," Sports Illustrated, January 2, 1967: Harkness' boys at RPI tended to be slower than a lot of other teams, and it seemed that whenever a really fast-skating team came up to Troy the arena would get terribly warm, so warm that the ice often became soft and slushy. At RPI they said it was probably only coincidence or a faulty thermostaby George64 - Hockey

Mr. Niss I cannot believe Chris Manon didn't have an opportunity at a more prominent program. I can't recall us ever having a player with his athletic ability. Not only is he a terrific player, but he seems to thoroughly enjoys himself. His enthusiasm is infectious, sort of the Jack O’Leary of the hardwood.by George64 - Other Sports
Re: Home Ice - 3 months ago
David Harding The NCAA rule book does not have any objective criteria. The cynic that I am, leads me to believe that rink operators may adjust the ice quality to offset the skating characteristics of the visiting team. In baseball, the infield grass is cut to favor the home team, if you bunt a lot, keep it long.by George64 - Hockey
Re: Cornell at Dartmouth, 1/27 - 3 months ago
George64 I’m curious, prior to this silliness, what percent of regular season games ended in a tie? I still hope someone can answer my question, but in the meantime, in the Lynah Rink era, Cornell has gone 1133-643-149, so only 7.74 percent of all games have resulted in ties. These data, however, include post-season playoffs, so the regular season percentage should be somewhat higher. On theby George64 - Hockey

Mr. Niss I did not know that AK Okereke was a walk-on. I didn't know that walk-on was even still a thing except for a kid to sit at the end of the bench, get a few minutes in the last game of the year, score and have the place go nuts. Wow. As I recall, back in the Donahue era, Louis Dale was a walk-on. Whittman was under-recruited because of an injury his senior year and Jeff Foote transfeby George64 - Other Sports

billhoward What a depressing finish, to wit being outshot in regulation and still be one lucky shot away from a 3-2 regulation win, then getting out-possessioned in the 3x3 OT then losing the shootout without getting even one goal. The 3 on 3 OT needs to go! It’s an aberration! I don’t recall ever seeing a 3 on 3 in the course of a hockey game. Puck possession becomes the key. Worse yet, fby George64 - Hockey

Trotsky George64Now, former Cornell trustee, Jon Lindseth ‘56, is calling for the ouster of President Pollack and Provost Kotlikoff. Cornell Sun article The Voice of Treason is all over it. The only time the fasc mention Cornell they're jamming us into their imbecile narratives. (I mean, I guess that's true of everything.) Ken711 Cornell 105 Wells 49. Good game for the whole bench to get some minutes. The starters played the first 10 minutes before sitting out the rest of the game. Does anyone know why Isaiah Gray was out and if he’ll be back for Princeton?by George64 - Other Sports

redice marty As someone who can't stand constant blabbermouth sports speak, I'm fine with Tim only talking about the plays he thinks are interesting. Agreed!! I've hit the mute button to silence these people, especially in the NFL....It makes me crazy!! Agreed!!! Top on my NFL mute list is Tony Romo. Arguably, he knows a lot, but I don’t care. I just want to enjoy the game. Fansby George64 - Hockey

Trotsky upprdeck we need another good weekend and get some help from the teams 3-4 spots ahead of us. our margin is gonna be small. We need seven more good weekends. But so what? Some philosophy. This Winter is a lesson that the NC$$s can't be the overdetermining goal. Enjoy the games one at a time, and let PWR take care of itself. This is, in microcosm, the human problem of worryingby George64 - Hockey
Re: Cornell vs Quinnipiac, 1/20 - 3 months ago
scoop85 In our day we’d be sure to come back Friday when break ended to attend both of the weekend games. It was a sacrifice of course to spend the weekend at school with no schoolwork to worry about, but that was before Cornell apparently became a place where fun came to die. And we spent the night at Barton Hall to buy session tickets the next morning. In the years before they opened Barton,by George64 - Hockey

George64 BTW, our heavyweight crew made the cover in, I think, 1957, several years before Cornell became even a gleam in my eye. I have a vague memory of Ed Marinaro making the SI cover as well. Chris '03 Opening at Harvard: “Murphy, 67, took over the Crimson football program prior to the 1994 season at a time when Harvard had not won more than eight games in a season since 1919.” While true, prior to 1980, Ivy teams only played nine games, and before 1940 only eight, unless they played in a bowl game.by George64 - Other Sports

Al DeFlorio George64 I like Martha Pollack’s written response when asked by some members of Congress to make clear Cornell’s policies on genocide. “Genocide is abhorrent, and Cornell condemns calls for the genocide of any people. An explicit call for genocide, to kill all members of a group of people, would be a violation of our policies.” Fittingly succinct, nothing about “context.” Of courseby George64 - John Spencer Is Dead

arugula Good stuff. Did you all know Shane had had hip surgery? Also, Rayhill has literally never played a minute. His comments were good and he was fairly articulate. Unusual for a player to stick around for three years and never play. Wonder what the plan is, if any. Maureen Dowd summed it up nicely in her Times op ed. BTW, both used the same white-shoe law firm. Re: Cornell in the Movies - 4 months ago
George64 The book, Boys in the Boat, was great, the documentary was great, the movie should be terrific, too. As I recall, Cornell was prominently mentioned in the book, so we should get a mention in the movie. The 1936 Poughkeepsie Regatta, in which Cornell finishes fifth, is depicted in the film.
