Re: Best cheers, best insults - 19 years ago

Ithaca Summers - 19 years ago
I spent 4 summers in Ithaca (including after graduation) for various reasons, and the lack of people around made it SO much better. It definitely felt like home, and the fact that so many of my friends stayed there each summer only helped. The massive amounts of construction (I was there during the lake source cooling construction war zone) were but a minor inconvenience. When the "usual&by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: New Recruit - 19 years ago
With prep school numbers like that, he looks like Ryan Moynihan v2.0. Let's hope he has an even better Cornell career (note: not meant to disparage Moynihan in any way).by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Best sport facilities (Ivy League) - 20 years ago
Perhaps times have changed, but I think that's incorrect. I don't know a single person who considers Bailey's acoustics good. That's one of the reasons the new Lincoln Hall had a rehearsal room built into it. As someone who played in Bailey in different ensembles on many, many different occasions, I'm fairly confident saying it bloweth.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Best sport facilities (Ivy League) - 20 years ago
You don't think the Tiger marching-around band will show up next year in Ithaca? Nope. If they didn't go to their own home contest, there's no way they'd go to Ithaca for lacrosse. I haven't seen them travel for hockey in 9 years. They just go for basketball and football. Rumor has it they missed last Saturday's game for a (cough, hack, smirk) wedding.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: [OT] Best sport facilities (Ivy League) - 20 years ago
Dammit, John, you're making me post. Bailey Hall MUST be renovated. Uncomfortable seats, horrible acoustic, virtually ZERO climate control, no back stage space... it blows. And for what it's worth, a HS friend of mine who was a team manager for Brown's basketball team said that history aside, he thought Cornell had the nicest gym in the Ivy League. The Palestra is probably the best overalby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: OT: Goalie masks vs. catcher's masks - 20 years ago
I believe the new catcher's masks are slightly different than goalie masks behind the head making them relatively easier to remove. When O'Brien debuted his mask, I recall the announcers commenting on how that was an obstacle to be overcome in design.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: OT: Goalie masks vs. catcher's masks - 20 years ago
This style of catcher's mask has been around for a number of years. I believe the first catcher to wear one was Charlie O'Brien (of too many teams to list here). Some guys don't like them; I know Mike Piazza prefers the face mask/batting helmet combination. The gimmicky "catcher cam" requires the goalie style mask, so you know Fox loves the new ones.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Cornell @ Harvard in NYC - 20 years ago
I've spoken to the manager at Ship of Fools and we are good to go for the game on Friday night. They're reserving the main room for us with a big screen (and if I remember correctly, a few others as well). It seems we're being taken care of quite well. I think there'll be a bunch of tables with cards on them that say either my name or "Cornell." Come on in. I told him to expect aboby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Cornell @ Harvard in NYC - 20 years ago
For those of us who cannot get to Boston this weekend, I'd like to suggest gathering at Ship of Fools at 82nd and 2nd. As others have posted before, they've been very open to showing college hockey on some screens, and it definitely shouldn't be a problem with no competing football playoffs. If I hear of enough people ahead of time, I'll call ahead and see if we can get it on one of the big scrby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Happy Holidays - 20 years ago
Last time I was in Vegas, the kind folks at the Venetian Sports Book mentioned that the Coast casinos (Barbary Coast, etc.) where the best college hockey places in town. Don't know if it's true, but it's worth a shot.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Brown 3 Cornell 3 Final OT - 20 years ago
But at the same time, there's the inherent implication that being beaten by Cornell is something that would not happen to a *truly* good team (which, of course, it could). Sure, I see your point when you are strictly talking about standings in the polls, but I still think it's a subtle insult to our team. So I admit to being somewhat biased against this cheer, but I think my biggest problem wby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Brown 3 Cornell 3 Final OT - 20 years ago
Is anybody else embarassed that sections D and E vociferously chanted "overrated" at the end of the game? Arguably, that cheer is inappropriate at any time. In a tie game, it's demeaning to our own team. "You must really suck if you tied us!" Come on.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Athletics: Throw Toys Instead of Fish - 20 years ago
I think everyone should show up to 's house and throw fish at it. That would be damn funny. Didn't somebody throw a huge dildo on the ice a few years back? I'd think that would stop the request for throwing "toys." Okay, I'm more than a little loopy now.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: New Helmet - 20 years ago

Re: Daily Sun Article 11/11 - 20 years ago
I believe that the acapella to Rock-n-Roll Part 2/Gary Glitter grew out of the profanity crackdown. The AD forbade the band from playing it at the beginning of the 3rd because of the "f*** 'em up, f*** 'em up... I thought it was the '97-'98 season, but somebody please refresh my memory. In any case, the Faithful would have none of that, and all together, began to sing Gary Glitter. Now, it hby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: No More Townies - 20 years ago
Am I the only one who is not insulted by the term "townies," but rather the mindless insistence on standing up at EVERY SINGLE GAME REGARDLESS OF THE SITUATION? Yes, it's dramatic, yes it can be inspiring, but do it all the time and it loses the COMPLETELY. There have been very effective uses of this in the past; now it's just another mechanical thing that happens just because. EDby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Under-18 Game Photos are up - 20 years ago
The one shot of the team all together really gives you an idea of how short Vesce really is. I think it really just gives you an idea of how big the rest of the team is!by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Infamous cowbells - 20 years ago
John- I figured as much. Sorry that didn't come across. Just posted in case the general populace was interested.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Infamous cowbells - 20 years ago
The winning team guy was "taken over" by the band in 1995-1996. I use quotes because the guy who did it didn't see it that way (and neither do I). The person in question happened to be one of the most dedicated of the Lynah Faithful, band or not, and remains so to this day. The guy who followed him was similarly dedicated, and at that point it was already "tradition" (againby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Cornell players at NHL prospect camps - 20 years ago
especially the back to back 5-hole goals - that never happens! Really? If I were going to point out a weakness from this year, I would say it's ye ole five hole. Post Edited (07-18-03 15:44)by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: McKee - 20 years ago
Keith, I definitely agree with you, but did this already happen with Ian Burt in the summer of 1997? After Pelletier left, we were down to ONE goalie (albeit a good one!) in Jason Elliott. Maybe it was the same situation (earlier admission, possibly deferred), but I'd never heard of it.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Playoff DVDs revisited - 21 years ago
I hate digging up old threads with dozens of outdated posts, so I'll start a new one. I'm just curious what the progress is on the burned DVDs of the playoff games from this year. Are they still in the works? Thanks.by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Higgins Signs With Montreal - 21 years ago
I take offense at the above comments. I might very well be the worst bio lab partner ever. But John, you can speak to this (if only indirectly).by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Hosting, Small Ice, and Face Shields - 21 years ago
With no comment about the other issues presented here, I feel pretty strongly that if a batter charged the mound with his bat in hand and beat the pitcher to death, he should be prosecuted. There's no reasonable way that could happen (as opposed to a bat flying out of a batter's hands on a swing). As for the ball hitting a player in the head, well, that happens all the time, and intent is a helby Lowell '99 - Hockey

Re: Memories - 21 years ago
I'll go out on a small limb and say Mark McRae's *tying* goal. I mean, come on. We NEVER win games like that. Sure, the comeback against Brown in 1997 was amazing, but (1) there was less on the line, and (2) we hadn't had our hearts (nearly) trampled on after leading most of the game. When Kolarik scored, I just fell back in my seat, turned to my friend, and said, "We lost." When Mby Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: Dead (or Zombie) Cheers - 21 years ago
The Hahvahd cheers live on in the world of the marching band, but I tend to think they're a little too... I don't know... out of character for today's Lynah (interpret that as you please). Not to mention far too organized. Remember, some people can't even distinguish "you goon" from "you lose."by Lowell '99 - Hockey
Re: The Single Funniest Moment... - 21 years ago
The F U, JR cheer is the funniest cheer I've ever heard, hands down. I was in Section O (sucks) for it, and it could clearly see/hear it. Not only was the creativity there, but the delivery was perfect, with clearly enunciated "Give - Me - An - 'F'!". A tip of the cap to Mr. Leigh Bernstein '00, and I'm not just saying this because he was my Hausmate for a year. Post Edited (04-1by Lowell '99 - Hockey
