Al DeFlorio CU2007 Swampy Iceberg 1-1 tie to Yale earlier with Penn beating Columbia. I guess Cornell would have to beat said Columbia team next week and hope Penn loses at Princeton to win the league? Seems unlikely. I wasn’t impressed by Princeton. But then, they could always park the bus and pull something out. Assuming we beat a pretty bad Columbia team, are we a safe bet to make the ncaaby nshapiro - Other Sports

ugarte billhoward... Final, Colgate 1-0 and Cornell drops to 9-2 albeit, unlike another fall sport, no losses in Ivy play. ...i thought this was going to be brutal for our RPI but it turns out that Colgate, at 38 after the W, isn't a particularly bad loss (as of now). Cornell is still at 5. Of course I'm more nervous about the Ivy schedule than I was a week ago after the white-knuckle ride againby nshapiro - Other Sports

billhoward One wonders how much it's a business decision to fill so much of your entering class in mid-December. So many ways to slice the data. billhoward RichH Cornell is #1 in schools with an undergraduate enrollment > 10,000. Still doesn't mean a whole lot. Cornell is the Great American University in offering a first-rate education but not to a handful: 15,500 undergraduate students out of ~62,000 Ivy undergrads. One of the eight Ivy schools educates one-quarter of the Ivy students. I thought Penn had 10000 undergradsby nshapiro - John Spencer Is Dead

Jeff Hopkins '82 Trotsky Great movie. The whole concept ruined baseball, but it was a great movie. What ruined baseball was the realization by (I think it was) Marlon Byrd that a singles hitter with a .300 avg is worth less than a .240 hitting slugger. He changed his swing angle, started hitting homers, and got bigger contracts. He became the role model for the modern baseball player. Iby nshapiro - Hockey

billhoward The Schoellkopf Crescent has crumbled many times, been repaired, and has not yet fallen. The aging stadium has also benefited from Cornell's imposed weight limit of 3,500 fans at football games. Otherwise there'd probably be 10,000 at most games. Is this new? What do they do at graduation - in 2019 the crescent was packed for graduation.by nshapiro - Other Sports

I don't know about getting 'helped' so much by Delaware. Georgetown deservedly was highly rated because they had only one loss, but they went 1-1 vs Princeton and Penn, just like Cornell, and Richmond was the only other tournament team they played. They did not blow any games against bubble teams (like Cornell did vs Army), but I think both Georgetown and Rutgers may well be overrated. Delawaby nshapiro - Other Sports
Re: Cornell admissions - 2 years ago
Trotsky CASIt’s amazing that Cornell now receives over 20 applications for each available spot in the first-year class, & may accept only 1 of every 13-14 applications. Sure. "Amazing." Eliminate the common app, make High Schoolers request an application that they have to put in a typewriter to fill out. You know, the good old days. That will cut down on applicants for sure.by nshapiro - John Spencer Is Dead

At present, there is just one ACC team in the top 8 'at-large' slots in RPI (after Maryland, Princeton and Georgetown take Conference slots). Of course, the committee will still figure out a way to get 3 or 4 ACC teams in the tournament because the ACC is always, by definition, the strongest conference, despite on-field results.by nshapiro - Other Sports
Re: Cornell lacrosse 2022 - 2 years ago
Interesting dynamic among top lacrosse teams: Maryland - Undefeated with quality win over Penn Princeton/Georgetown/Cornell/Penn/Yale - Each team has at least one win and loss among the group, and the only loss to a team below them is the Yale loss to 2-8 Penn State Rutgers - Lost to Princeton, but no losses to anyone not listed. Every other school has a loss to someone not listed aboby nshapiro - Other Sports

So, for the first time all season, there is the possibility of three games in three days. Assuming same rules apply to men and women, why do they play overtime in games 1 and 2? Wouldn't it make sense to be able to win the series by going 1-0-1? I know that this means a team would be pulling its goalie in a tied game 2 if they lost game 1, but isn't that preferable to making them play what coby nshapiro - Hockey
