Re: Cornell 3 St. Lawrence 2 (OT) postgame thread (not scores updates) - 19 years ago
Good teams find ways to win ugly when they have to. A close one that challenges them will serve them well for what awaits them down the road. Some of their highly ranked colleagues in the CCHA and WCHA might lose games like this.by ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: NCAA regionals: Cornell-UNH @ Amherts (Bracketology column) - 19 years ago
I'd rather see Cornell play Michigan than Ohio State. Granted, Michigan is loaded with some dangerous, creative forwards and has a ton of experience (10 seniors), but their wide-open style game is vulnerable to good defense. When Ohio State beat them earlier in the year, they kept three and sometimes four skaters at home, playing good positional defense to neutralize Michigan's speed. Just watby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Other Scores 2/19 - 19 years ago
Looks like splits for top three teams in poll this weekend. UMD 6 DU 1 at end of 2nd. UMD outshot DU by same differential in both periods but had 5-goal explosion in 2nd. After last night's close one, looks as if DU has run out of gas.by ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Cornell 3 RPI 0 - 19 years ago
Wolverines get a reversal on Cornell, even while their game is still in progress, slip into 4th place tie with Minnesota in PWR. Looks likely to stay that way: score UM 6 ND2 with 13 to go in 3rd. Geez, this stuff is volatile.by ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Lynah remodel - keeping up with the Joneses - 19 years ago
Fortuntely there are still a few decent buildings on the Central Campus, even though the architecture tends to be blocky and graceless. Hill Auditorium, the Rackham Graduate School building, the Hatcher Graduate Library, the Law Quad, and perhaps Angell Hall, which looks like GS on steroids. I suspect that if the current Michigan planning staff worked for Cornell, most of the Arts Quad would beby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Lynah remodel - keeping up with the Joneses - 19 years ago
Yup, I lived a year on North Campus before I got out. Got a car as soon as I could, to free myself at least on weekends and evenings. In defense of the Music Building, Eero Saarinen seems to have designed it from the inside out. The layout of rehearsal and performance space, studios, and practice and classroom space serves the needs of their large enrollment awfully well. The flip sideby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Lynah remodel - keeping up with the Joneses - 19 years ago
It's a nice pipe dream, but it has these obvious problems. At Michigan everything that used to take place at Yost had been moved to the Crisler Arena several years prior, and Cornell doesn't have that kind of facility to absorb displaced events. I don't know whether multi-use is feasible. Lynah could still be used for practices, intra-mural games, lessons, and general skates, which would reducby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Lynah remodel - keeping up with the Joneses - 19 years ago
And the Coliseum NEVER sold out. We can attritute the athletic department's conversion of Yost to incredible vision under the circumstances. However, they just may have been making lemonade. The Coliseum was in even worse shape than Yost, and they had to do something with the Yost site, given its highly visible and central location. This was probably the cheapest alternative available to themby ninian '72 - Hockey

Go, Bill! I really like the point about the untapped potential fanbase. I may be swimming against the tide, but I think an overriding goal should be that anyone who wants to see a Cornell hockey game on any given night should be able to do so. The line should become a dead tradition. Maybe this will result in some empty seats against teams like Onion, but will this detract from the Lynah expeby ninian '72 - Hockey

Re: Pokulok done for season? - 19 years ago
We have no idea what the injury was, so it's fruitless to speculate how long his recovery will be. There's been a suggestion that the injury was something else - which I've gone through myself - and the recovery period is a lot longer when you add in the need to avoid hard physical contact for awhile after the injury heals. If we have him back sometime this season, that would be great, but it mby ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: Frozen Four at Ford Field? - 19 years ago
Detroit may not be a garden spot, but it's probably the most rabid hockey town in the country. The Wings have tremendous support, and after years of disappointing Lions and Tigers teams, hockey is THE sport in Detroit. If you're going to try to pull off a stunt like this, Detroit is as likely a spot as any. That said, one wonders what the practical limit for the size of a hockey venue is. Atby ninian '72 - Hockey

Good intuition. This week's Bracketology column at uscho has Cornell in the West with NoDak, Mass-Lowell, or UNH as the first-round opponent, depending on how the bonus points shake out:by ninian '72 - Hockey
Re: How good are the Patriots? - 19 years ago
Sorry, but you're way off the mark on Brady. He's one of the coolest, best decision-makers in the game, and it's this quality that's gotten him where he is. When John Wangler graduated at Michigan, they recruited Drew Henson - who was supposed to be the next John Elway - to start at quarterback. Slight glitch, though, in that the previous season's backup - Brady - essentially beat out Henson fby ninian '72 - Hockey
