Re: Cornell Coaching Championships - 19 years ago
How many banners are hanging from Cornell's rafters? But when your team has only a handful to show off - think Princeton and, what, one 1998 postseason title plus memories of Hobey Baker 85 years ago - maybe you'd want to have a banner for the RS title or the honor of holding the Cleary Cup indicating you got more points in the RS. Re: The game within the game (toothless fans) - 19 years ago
Don't know why I'm being so civil to Clarkson other than maybe I'm not my usual ornery self this morning (it will pass) ... and we have a place up in the Adirondacks and we've seen some of the effects of the soft economy of the Adirondacks / North Country. Regarding the quip about avg teeth per fan, 32/Cornell, 12/Clarkson. Nobody sets out to have a dozen teeth left as an adult. The economy suckby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Random thoughts from Will - 19 years ago
Excellent thoughts and perhaps even the team sensed or Schafter talked along the same lines: A 3-0 lead is pretty much locked in as a win (you'd think not say those words aloud) and maybe better to not figuratively knock pride since they a) might start fights leading to DQs for Cornell the next game and b) we might play them down the road in Ithaca so don't give them motive for revenge. RPI primer (brackets for dummies): Why #2/#3 Cornell may seed lower - 19 years ago
Someone skilled at RPI who's sitting around waiting for the Clarkson faceoff might want to explain in Cliff's Notes form what RPI is and why Cornell despite being ranked #2 or #3 in the polls is in danger of not being one of the top four teams in the tournament. Linking them to the bracketology column would be cruel and unusual punishment and not that illuminating for rank novices. (I created a dby billhoward - Hockey
Re: Numbers: ECAC GA/GP record within reach - 19 years ago
Anybody else think the pre-game show is a bit, ah, somber? (As opposed to, say, Harvard Radio asking players how they deal with helmet hair.) This would be a good question and followup for Mike on the pregame Koach's Korner. Re: Cornell 3 St. Lawrence 2 (OT) postgame thread (not scores updates) - 19 years ago
"Saving players?" If it's to rest them up for next week's big series, that's in two weeks. I think right now the team would like to be known as the one that won - correction, went unbeaten - its last 14 games of the regular season. Question is, what if there's a (say) Ryan O'Byrne who's still marginal, does he get all his regular shifts? OTOH the coach never knows which shift it isby billhoward - Hockey

Re: Connection outage end of St. Lawrence game? - 19 years ago
For people with mainstream needs, it's amazing how broadband has swept into power, and how the cheap hotels that cater M-F to business travelers who need to watch their budgets, they typically give broad to you for free. If you bring your Airport plug-in adapter or a PC travel router, you can get wireless as far as the swimming pool if you pick your room carefully. Sorry, Age, we digress.by billhoward - Hockey

Anybody who was at the game: How full? How many Cornell fans? About the only noise we heard on the radio was the word RED during the anthem, the siren (is St. Lawrence proud of that traditon?), and the Big Red Band.by billhoward - Hockey

Re: Friday 2/25 other scores - 19 years ago
Give the Cantabs credit: Box score says they got the tying goal with Dov pulled, at 18:46. Although it's not 100% clear what happened since the box also says Dov only played :04 less than the Dartmouth goalie. Was that a miracle-fast goal right off an offensive zone faceoff?by billhoward - Hockey

Didn't mean to be doctrinaire by putting the "(not scores updates)" subject-line-ending but if you come to the forum in the morning to see what everyone thought of the game, it really sucks to have to wade through all these messages, "DU leading Alaska-Fairbanks 1-0" "AF goes ahead 2-1 which should really change the RPI". So maybe Cornell has been down, or not up-up-up for a month. If these things come in cycles, about two or three weeks from now would be a good time to be on up cycle. Realistically, the first round (for us, second for ECAC tourney) opponent shouldn't (not won't, just "shouldn't" require superhuman effort to roll over. Is this just luck was with Cornell tonight ... or the real mark of a championship caliber team to tie the game in the third, get a late goal in the third to win (oops, waved off), and then put one more in, in overtime. From the webcast audio, it sounded as if McKee saved Cornell more than a few times. Now if you went up for the game ... what do you do for the next 21 hours? How much afteby billhoward - Hockey
