Re: Other lax scores 5/12-5/13 - 17 years ago
scoop85Although I am generally loathe to root for Princeton, I have even a greater disdain for JHU Sorry, but is this because Hopkins' coach (Dave Pietramala) used to coach Cornell? I faintly remember him doing good things for the then mostly average lax teams in the late 90s.by min - Other Sports
Re: NCAA Lax Selections - 17 years ago
KeithKAny system that puts an undefeated team behind teams with losses is ill-conceived. I don't care what the SoS is. There's just no data to indicate that an undefeated team isn't the best team, only incomplete data saying that it might be. I agree. Coach Tambroni's calm comments notwithstanding, I think that placing an undefeated team a #4 is not only stupid or ill-conceived, but it alsoby min - Other Sports

Agreed. A east-west rivalry is probably more real back when only four teams (two from each geographical region) were invited to the NCAA tournament.by min - Other Sports

ebilmesRich S They played hard and pretty well against an underrated opponent who has been hot lately. They lost 1-0 on OT. How is that choking? Not a chance. Did cornell "choke" when they lost in OT in their last NCAA appearance? I think not. Clarkson lost as a #1 seed coming off an ECAC tournament win. Cornell lost as a #2 seed to the best team in the country. Oh, and Nby min - Hockey

And the fact that the Irish team did it on St. Patrick's day made it even more special. As far as upsets go, this sad incident reminds me of the infamous USA-Colombia match during the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where a Colombian player was gunned down after the match.by min - John Spencer Is Dead

Re: WHY CORNELL WILL NO LONGER DOMINATE THE ECAC - 17 years ago
ftyuv I'm not saying we should get rid of Schafer, but I think it's worth considering whether he is really doing us a service by trying to move the team in a direction he may not be able to handle. If we recruit small and fast but coach big and stingy, it could leave us in a damaging no-man's land. At various junctures during the season, I also casually wondered whether the coaches were up tby min - Hockey

Hillel HoffmannAl DeFlorioDisappointing to see a Schafer-coached team play such stupid hockey. Not just tonight, either. Very surprising. Yes. But it's not just the stupid stuff. In the third period, Quinnipiac has been stronger in the corners, forechecking like animals, setting up the cycle, doing all the stuff we used to do. Used to do. Used to do. I completely agree. Re: ridiculous fight - 17 years ago
Forgive my ignorance, but I want to get this straight once and for all. When the opposing team drills your best player to the ice, per NHL tradition/folklore do you send the goons (or whatever it's called) line to fight or not? What is the proper or optimal action to take, if there is one? How is this different from beaning the other team's best hitter in baseball?by min - Other Sports

Research paper on ice hockey strategy (for the mathematically inclined...) - 17 years ago
Attached is a hockey-related research paper -written by a Harvard professor- using game data from the 2004-2005 Harvard squad. The author's findings are not entirely earth-shattering, but are interesting and show future promise nonetheless. Some of the study's main results: - When in trouble, dump the puck or retreat? Dumping the puck is the superior strategy. - When in offense, dump and chaby min - Hockey
