Re: Ted Donato coaching my kid - sacrilege? - 15 years ago
The rink is nice, but it lacks the character that makes college hockey, College Hockey. And did you just compare this: To this? Say what you want about BU as an educational institution, but at the end o the day it is still sandwiched between two highways and the slowest trolley service known to mankind.by mnagowski - Other Sports
Re: Schoellkopf Field's new artificial turf [no, not Lehman's 2004 graduation speech] - 15 years ago
I assume the lacrosse & field hockey lines can be added later? I assume as much. That said, I was hoping with the new turf the grid iron lines wouldn't be present in the spring. That's probably too much to ask for, though.by mnagowski - Other Sports
Re: Goodbye Alumni Fields... - 15 years ago
I don't think it is directly a Title IX issue. If the Field Hockey team needs AstroTurf to compete, and we want to field a Field Hockey team, then we will need AstroTuft to compete. On the other hand, building the stadium on Alumni Fields, when the fields will obviously be used for academic purposes in the coming years, seems to be a tad short-sighted. I could see that happening, although I wouldn't want it to crowd out Davey. And the Pep Band might also want to think about expanding its repertoire to include the Tragically Hip:by mnagowski - Hockey

ugarteDpperk29ugarteCowbellGuyDpperk29Middle of nowhere vs. somewhere. Woo! This may be the first time in recorded history that Ithaca was described as "somewhere." We must be moving up in the world. Re: Third DC-area Wegman's - 16 years ago
It's funny, as I have lived with a Wegman's my entire life. But now, here in Buffalo, people are *really excited* for the arrival of a Whole Foods. Personally, we could use a Trader Joe's. It fills a different niche than Wegmans/Whole Foods.by mnagowski - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: New NCAA rules - 16 years ago
I assume the coach wasn't also an English teacher... Nope. He was a physical education teacher. And my typing teacher obviously wasn't the cream of the crop either. Nor is this guy. Actually, at that point you wouldn't need points, would you? Nope. That's the beauty of it. I wonder what percentage of playoff overtimes end within 10 minutes? 15 minutes? A period? Re: A Bit of Football Recruiting - 16 years ago
Can't we all agree to gratuitously bash and demean other schools while braying about the immortal superiority of Cornell? I'm not really for bashing the other schools. But I will point out that Cornell has considerably strong alumni networks in California (the weakest seem to be in the Midwest), and that you can't get a beautiful sunset like the type that appear over Libe Slope at most other scby mnagowski - Other Sports

While we're off topic, might as well focus on the day at hand. Congratulations to all seniors upon your graduation. While it may seem like a formality, it's no small accomplishment. Welcome to the (somewhat dysfunctional) Big Red Family.by mnagowski - Hockey

I made the trek to Ithaca today. It was a beautiful day for a sporting event, I got a lot of much needed Vitamin D, and the view from the Crescent is spectacular, as always. Our defense was non-existent, while tOSU's ride was vicious. And I look forward to them beating Duke next week.by mnagowski - Other Sports

You just shot your own argument in the foot. I'm fully aware of this fact. But one way or another -- either through direct financial support, a quasi-student run funding arm, or implicit in-kind support -- the University is supporting (and subsidizing) a lot of activities that otherwise wouldn't be able to exist. Re: Guest Editorial in Today's Sun - 16 years ago
Cornell students aren't paying tens of thousands of dollars to support the various pursuits of the University. They are paying tens of thousands of dollars for a University education and (hopefully) a diploma with Ezra's face on it. It's an investment by the student and a fair* exchange. It doesn't give entitle students to cheap hockey tickets or a hockey team, for that matter. Well, then thisby mnagowski - Hockey
Re: Guest Editorial in Today's Sun - 16 years ago
beejjmnagowski. I do agree that the prices for students should not have gone up, and the 'townies' should have been 'taxed' instead. Yeah, God forbid the "poor" students park their Lexus RX330s and BMW X5s and walk for an hour here or there to save the 30 bucks for tickets. No, lets tax the "rich" townies who make $9.75 an hour at the bagel store or 35 grand a year workiby mnagowski - Hockey
