Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: How to gain acceptance to an Ivy League school! - 18 years ago
I dunno if I buy that, Trotsky. Zadie Smith is pretty damned good (and yes, I am jealous of her talent). Last I checked (which would be 2003), we didn't necessarily have to say positive things in workshop, but they did have to be constructive. This was quite intellectually taxing when dealing with some schmuck who fancied himself a wunderkind whose 90 page chunk of manuscript was worth poundiby Jerseygirl - John Spencer Is Dead

[Marginally OT]: Financial Icehockey (sic) World Cup - 18 years ago
Yep, this sounds just about like a couple colleagues of mine: An interesting read that contains no earth shattering revelations for anyone who's worked in finance and/or hung out with guys who play hockey. The (possible) Cornell tie-in comes in the bottom two paragraphs of the second page. Enjoy.by Jerseygirl - Hockey

Ken '70Jerseygirl And, for what it's worth, I've had friends on both sides of this issue -- one of my male friends was accused of rape by a girl with whom he had broken up (she eventually recanted), and an acquaintance of mine was on her way home from a party and got picked up by two men. They followed her into her house and raped her. She went to the hospital but never pressed charges becauseby Jerseygirl - Other Sports
Re: guilty - 18 years ago
Ken '70 Women are their own worst enemy when it comes to cedibility and rape charges. Approx. 40% to 50% of all rape charges are eventually recanted by the women who initially brought them (see as one of many on this topic). And how many false claims are never recanted? I don't have any right-wing radio hosts to cite on this one, but do ya think that maybe, just maybe, some women recant bby Jerseygirl - Other Sports

Regular skates: Goalie skates: Goalie skates have a wider blade and are less curved, with a sharper nub on each end. I guess that this is because goalies have to do less high speed precision work and more traction and gripping the ice with their skates work.by Jerseygirl - Hockey
Re: How crazy would this have been? - 18 years ago
To continue this completely absurd topic, would Louis get to keep his goalie skates or have to switch to regular ones? I ask because I used to work with a former Cornell goalie who was so used to skating in goalie skates for the last decade, he literally couldn't skate on regular hockey skates. So there's that aspect to consider.by Jerseygirl - Hockey

jtwcornell91RichHI remember leaving the semi. Then I came to as the 2nd semi was heading to OT. I found myself in back of the Michigan section somehow, and I was very confused that there were cheerleaders in the arena. Also, JTW didn't have his beard anymore. Nice story, but I didn't get a chance to shave until after the second semi. And I cut myself and bled all over the place. John,by Jerseygirl - Hockey

RichHjmh30DeltaOne81Much better than the frickin' noon game we had 3 years ago. Glad to see sanity return to the FF schedule, even if just a little bit.On the "bright side", there's plenty of drinking time after a noon game. I remember leaving the semi. Liz '05 Or maybe it's just that more of us college (or immediately post-college)-age people have messed with someone over IM... I swear I've never pretended to be some imaginary person online and gotten back at anyone who's hurt my friend. I AM STILL IMMEDIATELY POST-COLLEGE! DEAR LORD! I'm also probably far more confrontational than most people, so I guess it didn't occur to me that IMby Jerseygirl - Hockey

BeeeejTrotskyAs I said, people don't give her any crap about it -- even the cruelest kids seem to recognize that some things are simply beyond the pale. If that's true, that's great - but it's certainly a more recent development. Re: Delta- yeah, I know. I was being deliberately hyperbolic. I mean, I really do feel that way, but I generally agree with your usage issue, if I were reading that as someone being completely serious (which I don't think I ever am on these fora). I show my opposition to ideas, paradigms, governments, laws, and yes, sports teams etc. by withholding my insignificant amount of money. Re: nyc94-by Jerseygirl - Hockey

Re: NYC viewing? - 18 years ago
Red Sox fans are just as bad, you just don't notice when they're rooting for your team. I can appreciate the primitiveness of Yankees fans because while we may cheer for the same team, they're also hooting at my chest while standing in the beer line. Ugh. Re: NYC viewing? - 18 years ago
Yes. We're giving money to establishments in New York City that facilitate, nay, encourage, Red Sox fandom. Some people do not have a problem with that, but I do. And yes, I also know that looks ridiculous typed out.by Jerseygirl - Hockey

I am pretty sure there is an exception for missionaries to the 5 years to play 4 seasons rule. Brandon Hall '02, a former lax captain, played his freshman year in 1996, went on a two year mission, came back in 1999, missed a season due to injury, then somehow played at least two more seasons. I actually researched this because I didn't want to get it wrong, and he's listed as a senior for both tby Jerseygirl - Hockey
Re: OT - New CU Prez - 18 years ago
It's funny. When I entered as a freshman, I was somewhat disappointed that I wasn't going to have a celebrity speak at my commencement. I also thought I was a big jock-hating/anti-corporate hippie (now I have several athletically inclined friends, am doing a sprint triathlon in June, and work on Wall Street), so, uh, things obviously changed. By the time I earned my degree 4 years later, I was reby Jerseygirl - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: OT - New CU Prez - 18 years ago
Cornell doesn't give out honorary degrees, therefore, the keynote commencement speaker is always the president. The fancy/famous person traditionally given the honorary degree at most other colleges and universities gives Cornell's convocation speech. That's the one of which you're thinking.by Jerseygirl - John Spencer Is Dead

Eh, give the kid a break. She's probably a star struck high schooler who found her way onto the board...and, come on,Topher *is* freaking adorable (says the old lady who babysat for kids who are now older than most of the current players). Let's bring up Buffalo again...yuck. UHN fans are the worst. Alcohol and I did manage to steal one of those "UHN Wildcats/Cornell Big Red" t-shirts from a bar though, assuaging some of my misery. That was almost the highlight of the weekend. Re: Olympic bound Hughes? - 18 years ago
Figure skating is in the midst of a regime change, of sorts...the old guard is on the way out and the new players are on the way in. This Olympics probably marks the end of the line for the big girls like Kwan (ok, definitely there) and Slutskaya. Cohen, at 21, will be one of the oldest contenders at the next Olympics if she stays in the sport for four more years. So that's why maybe figure skateby Jerseygirl - Other Sports
