Re: Hopes for the weekend - 22 years ago
With 17 doctoral programs, including a medical school, and a number of master's programs besides, Dartmouth would be perfectly justified to call themselves a university. Given the proclivity of too many schools these days to attempt to gain false prestige by calling themselves "university" on the skimpiest of pretenses (Colgate, for one), I admire Dartmouth's restraint and institutionaby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

As long as we're gonna win, we might as well play the Red Wings. Really boost our RPI. (But are they a TUC?)by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: PWR after Saturday - 22 years ago
Dr. jy3, I do understand you get credit in another selection criterion. But in the criterion called TUC, you don't get credit, and I think it's dumb--and has been, not only all of this season, but in the many seasons since it was dreamed up. If TUC is intended to give credit to a team's success (or lack thereof) against better teams, using a .500 winning percentage as an arbitrary measure--wiby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Multiple overtime wins and losses do NOT count as ties - 22 years ago
Some tournaments (e.g., Icebreaker, in the past, at least) decide games with shootouts. Keith, if Shaun Hannah's team gets a bid it will have nothing to do with its winning percentage. My point is that giving a team some positive credit toward an at-large bid for a win over Sacred Heart while giving another team no credit for a win over North Dakota or Brown or Union is downright silly.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: Dumb TUC - 22 years ago
I think it's only games that are won-and-lost in non-standard fashion (e.g., shootouts, scissors/paper/rock) that go into the NCAA books as ties. Yes, TUC stands for "teams under consideration," and, you're right, it's a misnomer. Most teams at the .500 level are not really under consideration at all. (Does anyone really think the NCAA is giving Sacred Heart any more "consideratby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

>"I did say quite clearly in more than one place, USCHO and on the Roundtable, that cornell deserved to win that game." Nope. Not true. Nothing but the usual whining on the Roundtable. Another RichS fantasy.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: We - 22 years ago
>"Perhaps you should acknowledge that and give them a dash of credit." Do you mean something like the "credit" you gave Cornell two weeks ago after the win over Clarkson? "I know the cornell folks are going to scream "whining" about this but the fact is that they have gotten away with a lot of clutch and grab stuff the past two seasons. Last season a nuby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
PWR after Saturday - 22 years ago
With several games not yet completed (11:26pm) and Brown no longer a TUC, Cornell drops to #8 in PWR and now wins only 18 comparisons--significantly reducing the edge over teams just below us in the rankings.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Musical goals - 22 years ago
In the sixties and early seventies Cornell always attacked the west goal during the first and third periods. Sometime during the Bertrand era it was switched around so the opposing goalie would be surrounded--and harassed--by fans at the east end for the first and third periods. I think it was McCutcheon who switched it back--causing Jim such woe.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: PWR after Friday - 22 years ago
More TUC madness: Union is NOT a TUC because two WINS over Findlay don't count. Canisius IS a TUC because two LOSSES to Findlay don't count. So Western Michigan gains two wins (over Canisius) in TUC and Cornell loses two (over Union). It may be a moot point, because a Canisius loss to Sacred Heart tonight would knock them out of TUC anyway. On the other hand, a Canisius win tonight would makby Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Lowell leads Northeastern 1-0 after one in an empty Tsongas Arena. You'd think there was a measles outbreak again. Maine 3-1 after one over a depleted BC team.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Stupid playoffs - 22 years ago
I'm with you, Graham. If you can lose a semi or a final, (or, one last time, a PIG) in one game, why not a quarter/quint? The single game quarterfinal format worked fine for many, many years in the ECAC (on Tuesday night, no less), until some ECAC genius came up with the "best-two-out-of-two-plus-minigame" and then "first-to-three-points" formats.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: A Modest DVD Proposal - 22 years ago
There was a 25th anniversary reunion of the 1970 team in Ithaca. Resulted in a quite large NY Times article. Both the '67 and '70 teams were honored at the hockey team's golf outing and banquet in July 2000. Many players were there (including Dryden) and Ned was the guest of honor. Nice time.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Sam Woodside ranked right up there with Yogi: "...Dartmouth in their dark green uniforms; Cornell wearing dark white..." Maybe Laura can tell us if any "ancient treasures" really do exist in the archives. I'd sure be interested.
