Re: Out of town scores: playoffs [Saturday] - 18 years ago
trainbowJust heard the National Anthem played at RPI. A distinct "RED" could be heard at the appropriate time! From the Cornell Alumni Magazine Vol 104 No. 4 describing why Cornell's uniforms are bright red Some give credit to legendary hockey and lacrosse coach Ned Harkness, who came to the Hill in 1963. He changed the color of the hockey uniforms to bright red (perhaps because thby ursusminor - Hockey
Re: 2005-2006 PWR - playoffs edition! - 18 years ago
Ken '70Sorry, the above is true only as you move away from .5000, not toward it. UMD will be moving away from .5000 tonight, hopefully south. Apologize for the confusion. Exactly. In your previous message, ".238" should be ".0238", thus about 10 times bigger than .0024, not 100, but it doesn't change your point.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: 2005-2006 PWR - playoffs edition! - 18 years ago
Ken '70 UMD's RPI will stay about where it is with another result like friday. Since they're at .500 they are at the exact point where a win or a loss has the highest impact on their own record, which is 25% of RPI. Losing again tonight drops their win % to .486 which is enough to almost offset adding another instance of MN's record to their Opp record column. Re: ECAC first round playoffs - likely winners - 18 years ago
Liz '05How on earth do you play six post-season games and win only once? Aren't there enough one-and-done games to keep that from happening? IIRC, the ECAC tournament first round was first-to-three-points at the time. Yale tied its first two games and then won the third to advance. They then lost the semifinal and final. Fianlly, they lost one game in the NCAA Tourney, for a total record or 1-3-by ursusminor - Hockey

KeithKbillhowardI don't think many of the even biggest hockey schools have a lot of scholarship money to pass around to keep extras on hand. Doesn't the NCAA limit teams to 18 full scholarships for hockey? (Which could be split as 12 full rides and 12 half-rides ... I believe.)I believe you can split the scholarships anyway you want. So you could have 6 kids on full rides, a dozen on halfs and 2by ursusminor - Hockey

Re: Best/Favorite Cheers - 18 years ago
FWIW, RPI's baseball team and others use "the chicken" as a mascot and call themselves the Redhawks. At some point, each team voted as to weather they should be Engineers or Redhawks. Thankfully, the hockey team kept Engineers as the nickname. (Clearly, this is because so few of the players major in engineering. ) As additional trivia, through the 1950's or so, the nickname Bachelorsby ursusminor - Hockey

jtwcornell91Jacob '06Do you know how good cal techs team is? There is a good chance i'll be going there next year and I wanna play hockey in some manner, but I'm figuring having only been playing for a year I won't be able to make the club team. Have you seen them play? I saw them play eleven years ago... Thanks for that trip down Memory Lane. That's when RPI's Kobie Boykins, who never gotby ursusminor - John Spencer Is Dead
Re: Cornell-Union Post Game Thread - 18 years ago
martyOverall when you remember that RIP had one recruit for this year when we played them last year, and we all felt that they would have a crappy freshman class, the obvious conclusion is that even with a third rate bunch of freshmen, they have enough talent that when playing well and maturing (something not all that common during a 4 year stint at the "Tute", they can and did give theby ursusminor - Hockey

TrotskyJayson Moy used to do color on the RPI cast and he was great. No idea who does it now, though. (Edit: or was it Mike Machnik? I forget. I'm old.) Jayson does play-by-play sometimes. He'll be doing the Cornell-Union TV game tomorrow. RPI has used about six announcers this season. Re: NCAA bracketing affirmative action style -- loosen the rules? - 18 years ago
TrotskyReturn the NCAA tourny to its status as a "cherry on top," Just like in 1985. A noble goal. Trotsky7) Split all NCAA gate and rights fees equally among all D-1 programs. Would that include the non-D-I schools playing D-I hockey whom, last I heard, did not partipate in sharing receipts? (Maybe it's only the D-III schools.)by ursusminor - Hockey

Re: Anyone watching CAN/SWE women's hockey game now? (OT, but deals w/ IVY league hockey) - 18 years ago
KeithKI assume they played with womens' rules? I'm sure many of the players on the Olympic squad have played hockey with checking at some level, but I doubt they want a physical game as a warm-up for the tournament. Yes, women's rules.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Anyone watching CAN/SWE women's hockey game now? (OT, but deals w/ IVY league hockey) - 18 years ago
The US Women's Olympic team also played boys' teams at eastern preps, Choate, Salisbury, and Westminister. Article from Choate: Pictures: According to USHR, Westminster beat the Olympians 5-2 and Salisbury beat the Olympians 4-2. The Choate result is not mentioned, and the link above that I posted is vague saying that both teams were happy with the result.by ursusminor - Hockey
Re: Top Freshman Suspended at Union - 18 years ago
I am pretty sure that with Union in danger of finishing above the magic .400 mark, drastic steps were necessary. Thus, players were asked to leave the team so that Union's image would not be hurt.by ursusminor - Hockey
