Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Conference Playoffs: Non-conference rooting interests - 10 years ago
Trotsky Beeeej As of the end of game two, we're #16 in the Pairwise. We pretty much have to win out now. A win tomorrow and a win against #3 Union might gain us back enough breathing room to make it, but let's be on the safe side and just win the whole fucking thing. We might not need to beat Union. Re: Game 1: Cornell 2, Clarkson 1 - 10 years ago
After tonight, we have the 8th best scoring defense, but still do not have a shutout against a D-I opponent. This is an interesting anomaly given how late in the season it is. Here are the other teams without a D-I shutout and their respective scoring defense rank: Lake Superior: 47th Boston University: 48th Princeton: 56th Alabama-Huntsville: 59thby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: ECAC Playoffs - 10 years ago
I'd say Clarkson, since it looks like Yale is playing better in the past couple of weeks. Yale's only losses in the last month have been to Cornell, Union, and Quinnipiac. Clarkson has lost to the same opponents, as well as to Harvard, Dartmouth, and now Princeton. Either way, if the regular season games have been any indication, these are going to be some close games.by KGR11 - Hockey

Re: Favorite Harvard Game Memory - 10 years ago
Towerroad The first game at Lynah East I went to during the second intermission the announcer said "Please stand and join us for the Harvard Alma Mater" Some words were scrolled across the scoreboard and the band played something that sounded like "Little Brown Jug". Nobody seemed to notice as the music petered out. About 5 seconds later without the benefit of the announcer,by KGR11 - Hockey

billhoward KGR11 KeithK dbilmes I must admit I did feel sorry for the Princeton seniors. It was their Senior Night tonight, and none of their "fans" stayed for the ceremony. jtwcornell91 KGR11 Sad results this weekend, especially last night. The good news is that Clarkson also lost two games this weekend when they probably expected to win two. I don't think we control our fate anymore as far as getting a bye: If we and Clarkson win the rest of our games, they win the tiebreaker, since they would have 3 wins against the top 4, while we would have 2 wins and a tie.by KGR11 - Hockey

ugarte Trotsky ugarte General feeling? That 5-0-4 was more of a mirage than I think we, collectively, wanted to admit.I think it was more a matter of not playing any of the top league teams over the stretch. The first game of the streak was against Colgate (current 3), and we stole a tie in a game we were outplayed. During the streak we missed Union and Q. Then 'Gate ended us. redice KGR11 redice Towerroad We will find out what the team is made of in the next 2 weeks. After watching the third period last evening, I'm concerned. They clearly lost their composure. Yes, the officials were putting the screws to them. But, the good teams have to stay composed during those times. Schafer's last few teams do not seem to possess that mental toughness. Re: Colgate 12/7 - 10 years ago
RichH A bandie mentioned in an email that the band was asked not to refer to players by their first names last night. I'm not sure if that came from an usher or an Athletics representative, but I'm assuming the latter. In 2010 or 2011, the ushers started to toss the telephone cheer leaders out of games. Eventually, the cheer leaders stopped using the sieve's name and the ushers stopped kickingby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Hockey Analytics: What Does It Mean For Cornell? - 10 years ago
adamw Here is the main difference between OPS and Corsi. OPS is a direct building block to scoring runs. You would never tell a baseball player "get on base less" or "please hit home runs only to this spot, or at this time". Whereas with shots ... you can't say that the solution to improving your game is simply shooting the puck more. That may or may not be the case, but yby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: 11/9 Union - 10 years ago
Robb The fact that until 2012 over Michigan, we never (maybe once? too lazy to look up) beat a higher seeded team. If you go with that trend, the only way to win it all is to go in with the #1 seed, and that didn't work either. As Age says, "where's the banner?" The first prerequisite for success in the NCAA's is being in it. That happened - a lot - when Cornell was dominatingby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: 11/9 Union - 10 years ago
There's a graphic in tbrw.info that shows NCAA Postseason opponents that paints a good picture of Cornell's success in the NCAA tournament and their ability to make it in. In my opinion, the point at which "the rest of the ECAC (Yale, Union, Q) started to get better" was 2008-2009 when we had no prayer of beating Yale. Since that time, Cornell has made it to the tournament 3/5 timesby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: To The Band - 11 years ago
I assume that the reason the Pep Band has not played Pinball Wizard and Dr. Worm as much recently is because they are also marching band concert songs. Conductors in the fall usually try to play as many "Pep Band Only" songs as possible since the marching band usually exhausts most of their repertoire on football game days. The conductors try not to repeat songs that the marchingby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: NC$$ Regionals_Going to Green Bay v. Michigan - 12 years ago
When we played Wisconsin in the basketball tournament 2 years ago, a band member arranged the music to the Minnesota fight song. I'm pretty sure the same guy arranged the Wisconsin fight song for the women's game against Minnesota. He is probably going to Green Bay, so I assume we can expect similar shenanigans.by KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 4 Colgate 3 @ Newark postgame - 13 years ago
ajh258 BigRedHockeyFan It looks like part of Cornell's problem this year may be that the conference has improved. According to the newly posted pairwise at CHN, 8 of the top 25 teams are from the ECAC. We beat Clarkson and Quinnipiac, yet we are still 2-6. Did our league improve or did we merely start to suck? Edit: BTW, I wouldn't call Cornell attendance a "majority" althouby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 4 at Dartmouth 5 - 14 years ago
Beating a 1 seed would be a tall order. Beating a 2 seed (currently Yale, NoDak, UNH,and Bemidji) is possible, since we are 2-3-0 against those teams, and we probably wouldn't play Yale in the first round. I think that if we are healthy for the first round as a 3 seed, we have a chance to win.by KGR11 - Hockey

Re: Cornell hammers Harvard - 14 years ago
Jim Hyla OK, that was a great game, but why do both the hockey and BB teams have to play at Harvard the same night? At least I'll be able to listen to the BB while watching the hockey. But oh, the parking. It's awesome for the band. Since they are the same night, we're going to have a band at each game and just take one bus. Same for Dartmouth as well.by KGR11 - Other Sports
Re: Who muzzled the band at Starr? - 15 years ago
The first priority of the Pep Band is to remain in the stands for the entirety of the game so that we can cheer the team on and provide entertainment for the crowd. For us to do so, we follow the rules of the Athletics Department of the home team. If we do not, they throw us out. For us to jeopardize our participation in the game before the puck is dropped is not smart. Personally, I believby KGR11 - Hockey
