Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
BearLover KGR11, a 90% chance of beating RPI is extremely high--is that indeed the chance the model us? I read fivethirtyeight and similar blogs religiously. I don't need to be lectured on probability/results-oriented thinking. At the same time, I'm genuinely in the dark about this predictor and could definitely be wrong in this particular case. Yeah, as of Feb. 23 our KRACH rating isby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Bracketology 2016-17 Style - 7 years ago
BearLover, from the sounds of it, you're on board with the process used (ie, Monte Carlo), you're just not on board with them using KRACH, right? It "feels" tough to say we have a 90% chance of beating RPI, given that we were only leading for 35 seconds in that game, while they lead for over half the game. That said, I think that people often think that 90% is a sure thing. It reallyby KGR11 - Hockey

Jim Hyla Also if we were to get by BU, I'd rather face Minny than DU. Also if we were to get by BU, I'd rather face BC than Bemidji. #2009by KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Pair wise Issues - 7 years ago
Dafatone KRACH often has less respect for us and for the ECAC than the pairwise does, but this year KRACH has us in 11th. They also have st cloud in 16th. And brown and RPI in the third to last and second to last spots in all of college hockey. I prefer KRACH because it prefers us I think one cause of this pairwise issue is that we have more conferences on average, yielding more auto-bidsby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Cornell at RPI 2/4/17 - 7 years ago
Trotsky margolism When was our last Capitol Region sweep?2009. Two things I remember about that weekend: 1. Barlow diving into the Cornell net to keep the puck out during a delayed penalty against Union. We showed up on ESPN's top 10 for that. 2. The drive back to Ithaca from RPI being terrible because of a snowstorm. Was grateful to have a Rochester-native driving.by KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Cornell 1 vs. Merrimack 0 1/7/17 - 7 years ago
Hooking Odds are Cornell will have to score more than one goal per game to win a majority of remaining games, no matter how well the team plays defense. Our offense was doing pretty well going into Florida. Last two games could be minor road bump...or a downward trend like last year. BearLover I'm just saying that even despite that loss we are probably currently higher in the PWR than we desby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: strategy - 7 years ago
I've been to only Harvard and the MSG games this year. From those games, I thought our defense has gotten slightest worse from previous years and our offense has gotten significantly better. Some stats from the previous decade against this team. Offensively in the past 10 years, we've only been this good once for an entire season (09-10). Defensively, we're right around average compared to our paby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Replacement Song for Swanee/Over There - 7 years ago
Kyle Rose KGR11 Personally, I think the telephone cheer is becoming ridiculous. The intros for the call recipients used to be way more concise. Some of the funniest things I've heard at Lynah were telephone cheers with ridiculously long, involved intros with lots of detail about the player in question. But the person doing it needs to be really loud. That's a fair point. The last time I was inby KGR11 - Hockey

kla52 andyw2100 abmarks That cheer has been played for what, close to 30 years now (at minimum) This is just off the top of my head, but I am reasonably certain it hasn't been close to thirty years. If I had to set an over/under, I'd set it at fourteen. If the band somehow decides to bring back "Swanee", could we also perhaps convince them to bring back "Mary Had A Little Lambby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Quinnipiac on ESPN3 - 7 years ago
KeithK andyw2100 I hear that the Tuba song changed because the old song--"Swanee River"--was objectionable, and less than politically correct. What? Why? Swanee River originated as a minstrel song. Here's the wikipedia article about the song:by KGR11 - Hockey
Re: More Realignment Coming: Notre Dame to B1G - 8 years ago
jtwcornell91 RichH Geographically this mixes things up with the league travel partnerships yet again. Cornell/Colgate would be the most likely to be split up with RIT coming in. Put us with RIT and Colgate with Princeton? The obvious (to me) pairings would be RIT-Cornell, Colgate-Union, RPI-Princeton and leave the rest the same. A bit unfortunate to split up the Capital District teams, but noby KGR11 - Hockey

Scersk '97 KGR11 B. The pep band conductors' term begins at the beginning of each semester. From the attendance lists sent out to the band's listserv, no current or former conductor was at the game. The job of the conductor during the game is to go according to schedule the Arthur hands them when the band gets there . This hand-off gives the conductor the opportunity to tell Arthur that the bandby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Recorded Music at Lynah During Merrimack Games - 8 years ago
I wanted to add some points on band leadership: A. The new pep band manager's term begins on New Year's Day. From the attendance lists sent out to the band's listserv, she was not at the games. In such instances, the former pep band manager would be "in charge" at the games (he was there). In my opinion, it should be job of a manager, past or present, to inform athletics/Arthur thatby KGR11 - Hockey

According to the blog, given our pairwise ranking and based on historical results, we have a 75% chance of making the tournament. I wouldn't believe this on the first day of the season.by KGR11 - Hockey

Trotsky I was very happy there was no fighting on other garbage -- the team is obviously much better disciplined. By my count, Cornell, Yale, and UNH are the only teams that have not committed a major or game misconduct penalty.by KGR11 - Hockey
Re: What's going on with this year's team? - 8 years ago
BearLover Because Cornell has been taking more penalties than its opponents, and it has been consistently leading in Going off on a tangent. I think Cornell's penalty stats are an interesting story this year. We are 50/60 in terms of penalty minutes, yet, as you said, are penalized more often per game than our opponents (4.4 vs 3.2 penalties). BearLover Scersk '97 BearLover Scersk '97 This thread is where I'd like to take up in this discussion. Everyone loves to bemoan how awfully we're stacking up with Union and Yale these days, but when one looks at the stats (say, for the last four years), one might change one's tune, as Trotsky has hinted at: Union: 5–5-1 (semifinal loss in 2014; first-round loss in 2015) Yale: 5-3 To me, thby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: 2015-16 - 9 years ago
Kyle Rose BearLoverThe point remains that Yale is still doing much better than us and that we never were able to solve the Yale teams of 2008-2011. Couldn't have said it better myself. Pretty much all it takes to beat Cornell is to play that style, because the coaching staff has no clue how to neutralize it. So, in the past season, who were the teams that play that style? I have no idea becauseby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: Should He Stay or Shoul He Go Part 2 - 9 years ago
Kyle Rose KGR11 Although I don't think this team has done well enough in the past 4 years, I don't know if Schafer's replacement would be better. Casey Jones, as an alum, might be interested but Clarkson had a 39% winning percentage this season (4-year rolling average of 45%). Maybe Topher will be coach one day, but who knows how good of coach he'd be? Schafer may be the best option just becauby KGR11 - Hockey

underskill this convo is kinda ridiculous at this point--I'd say it'd be one thing if he was in his late 60s or 70s and it was a Lou Marsh/Tim Taylor situation where you can argue it's time for him to move on;here we're talking about what a mediocre 3 years, not a decade. And we all know Cornell isn't going to open the vault and hire a big name replacement anyways. That said, I wouldn't mindby KGR11 - Hockey
Re: 2015 ECAC Playoff Permutations - 9 years ago
Trotsky Huh, I've never read your table that way before. I assumed that the tie-breaker was just assuming {x, y}, with any larger n-tuples being potentially too complicated to calculate. Correct me if (inevitably) I am wrong, but if you have a 3+ team tie they apply the tiebreaker to the whole set, resolve the top team, then re-apply the tiebreaker to the n-1 set, and so on? Re: What a difference one goal makes - 9 years ago
BearLover And lastly, we can debate the subjective success of every team until the cows come home. But there is an objective measure by which two teams have definitively passed us by: national championships won. All the .500 seasons in the world aren't going to bring Cornell a championship, and to argue that we are better off than Yale or Union or Quinnipiac because our worst seasons haven't beby KGR11 - Hockey

Scersk '97 Greenberg '97 Aren't CU band/opposing band/DJ/PA cues agreed upon mutually? I just assumed that's what the headsets are for. Accepting headsets is the first mistake. Re: Ranking of College Hockey Arenas - 10 years ago
From the discussion on Baker Rink's "access". As far as we could tell, there wasn't much in the way of public transit; you could take the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Line to the Princeton Station, but I can't say whether that's walking distance, and for what it costs to park at a station you might as well just drive to the campus. This analysis is so bad it's laughable. The NJTby KGR11 - Hockey

Jim Hyla RichH Time for a roast: I've taken a lot of shots at Union through the years. It drove me nuts when they were the league bottom-feeders, and still took points from good Cornell teams. I shouted loudly on this forum many times that the ECAC should trade them for RIT. I take some of those instances back, I guess. Trotsky KGR11 I expected Lake Placid and wasn't sure whether to expect a bid. Pretty much met my bar. Dafatone Does anyone else feel like we've had a better year than 16th in the pairwise? There have been some bad losses/ties, but we've beaten some pretty good teams as well, done very well out of conference, and we're 16-9-5, which is solid. I'm wondering if it's just a perception thing, or if this is a strange year. It seems like the bad teams have had REALLY bad years, which makes me thiby KGR11 - Hockey
