Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: 2023 ECAC Post Season - 1 year ago
toddlose Happy for those of you that rooted for Colgate yesterday. SMH. Today in the rink at the start of the 3rd Janice asked me if we root for Sucks. My reply was that I was rooting for BU and Denver. If Cornell was knocked out by Colgate winning do the hockey gods care who rooted for them? We could ask Dionne Warwick and the Psychic Friends Network but even poor Dionne grew weary of theby marty - Hockey

David Harding It's certainly true that the band is not allowed to play while the puck is in action, but there is no restriction on vocalizing within limits of decency. But if the band was told to make sure they finish early enough that there is no acapela singing, that just sucks.by marty - Hockey

BMac Well, shit. That’s as close as a game gets. They should be proud. Hopefully toothpaste loses and we’re not done this year. Interesting that Cornell wanted an off-side call to negate the goal. Also that Coach in his post game comments said a player fell down. I watched the replay and didn't see anyone fall. What am I missing?by marty - Hockey

HeafDog CU2007 Love the undergrad enthusiasm, but please spend most of your energy saving the traditions COVID ruined, rather than inventing new things. "Undergrad enthusiasm"? Sorry, I don't follow you. I celebrate my 25th reunion this summer. I can assure you I know all about our traditions. And I agree with you that they should be kept alive. On the other hand, they are a livingby marty - Hockey

ugarte jkahn St. Cloud wins !!!!wow you were way ahead of the radio stream i was listening to. let's go huskies. we need any one of three favorites to win tomorrow and i ran some numbers and there's roughly a 99.7% chance it happens. I like those odds. And 99.7% of eLynah agrees. (We also have 99.7% fewer cavities but I forget why.)by marty - Hockey
Re: 2023 ECAC Post Season - 1 year ago
BearLover But the model said Cornell had a 99.7% chance of making the NCAAs, how could this be happening?????? 110% you'd point that out. Is this a sophisticated attempt at anti-woofing?by marty - Hockey

Jim Hyla Fri and if we win Sat. Alas alone, but sitting with the Toomajian"s. Two smilies from Marty and Janice. The server rejected my emojis as my phone is apparently a bot. Edit: Maybe my phone is a bot. The emojis did post and I only hit the button once.by marty - Hockey

abmarks Ken711 Cop at Lynah I actually asked Andy about this project back in June or July and he said the cost of construction had increased to a degree that the project was not viable until the costs came back down I guess I don't understand how are the costs going to come down? Unless, perhaps they scale back the size of the project, construction costs are always going higher every year. Arby marty - Other Sports

ice For next weekend at Lake Placid, will the ice surface be 100' x 200' or 85' x 200'? Thank you According to one of the broadcasts (had both on last night) it is no longer Olympic size. While Cornell never seemed to have a problem with the wide ice I'm glad they renovated the rink.by marty - Hockey

Swampy marty Swampy Is anyone else trying to watch this on ESPN+? On my TV it seems the entire Hockey section is missing. I also tried search for "Cornell" and for "Clarkson," but found nothing. Do you have any idea what's going on? Do you see the white icons signifying the different sports? What brand of TV? Yes, I see white icons, but no hockey icon. It seems about hby marty - Hockey

Weder Trotsky Iceberg Al DeFlorio Seven players from second-place Harvard and three from the Ivy champion. Two of the D on that list, Krys and Palocsik, are in the transfer portal. Will be interesting to see where they wind up next season Once the COVID classes roll through that should no longer be such a big deal, right? Just two more farcical summers? I'd think that going forward there cby marty - Hockey

David Harding CU77 adamw CU77 KRACH could be adjusted to do better, as I outlined above. KRACH is a very simple model. The door is open ... I don't care enough to do it myself. In any case Massey probabilities are likely better, as they use more input (scores, locations, times). This comic says it well: Cloudy with a high wind warning.by marty - Hockey

Iceberg RichH When you sell out something you used to do yourself to the lowest bidder, don’t be surprised when shit happens beyond your control. Yay capitalism and middle men. I have no clue about the university's IT or procurement organizations, but this kind of stuff is exactly why vendor risk management programs exist. ursusminor The model also doesn't take into account how bad the refs are. It also doesn't take into account the entertainment value for those of us watching BL's response. Past performance in some cases does predict future outcomes.by marty - Hockey

Ron Fogarty Pre-game game from CHN "It's an awful setup... It is the worst decision ever made in our conference. The Ivy League teams are already restricted to 29 games because of their rules. "Making a quick move like this is for a one and out is a difficult one, especially for a team that ends up tied as a four seed. BearLover There is way less variance in a game of basketball than a game of hockey. I honestly don’t think this is a very helpful comparison. Depends on whether you run up against a hot goal tender.by marty - Hockey

Trotsky jtwcornell91 Trotsky First Round (Single Game): 12 Dartmouth at 5 Colgate 11 Brown at 6 Clarkson 10 Yale at 7 RPI 9 Princeton at 8 Union So all four matchups are Ivy at Empire. And it's the third time the bottom 4 of 12 were all Ivy (2014, 2022). Can we use this data to predict the number of times the bottom 4 will be all Ivy from 2024 through 2033?by marty - Hockey

Dafatone Maybe the Ivy League hasn't announced the point system because there is no point system. We're just supposed to guess. You will know what's in the point system after we pass the point system. The Cantabridgian Council must convene before the announcement is finalized.by marty - Hockey

Trotsky Scersk '97We used to make fun of the kids who didn't go out and spent all their time holed up in their dorm rooms playing No-friend-os. ('Cause god knows you can only work so much. Everyone needs some release.) Now, that's every kid, briefly as a necessity or otherwise as a response to a lack of options, but mostly as a choice or a symptom of phone addiction. Beeeej On a recent episode of the rebooted “Quantum Leap,” “Live. Die. Repeat.” (S1E11), we get about a 1/2 second glimpse of a Cornell diploma on the wall in nuclear physicist (played by Robert Picardo) Dr. Woolsey’s office. Looking on pause, I’m not even sure they went to the trouble of getting one that credibly looks like it says “Woolsey,” but it was a nice detail. So there is a Quantum Leby marty - John Spencer Is Dead

BeamHilll87 About the radio broadcast - I emailed WHCU's GM and learned that, due to an Ivy League deal with ESPN+, Cornell will no longer have WHCU broadcast CU Lacrosse games. To say this is disappointing is huge understatement, as Barry along with Tom and/or Howie provided unparalleled play-by-play and expert commentary on the games. I'm sure many/most of us would listen to them while watchiby marty - Other Sports
