Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Wow!!! - 20 years ago
Perhaps there's a reason those eBay bidders went bonkers. Here's an SI dispatch about the '71 Stanley Cup Finals, which Montreal won in 7 games over Chicago: "The Canadiens really won the Cup because of the play of two rookies -- Goalie Ken Dryden and Forward Rejean Houle, or Hooley, as Bobby Hull's shadow was known in Chicago. "If it weren't for that Dryden," said Boston's Philby Mark - Hockey

I'm trying to figure out how the bidding for No. 29's rookie card got so high -- is it the Montreal jersey on the front or the Cornell cartoon on the back?by Mark - Hockey

Al: I'm guessing that was Globe writer Fran Rosa, who covered the Bruins around that time. I think he also did stories on the Beanpot back in the day.by Mark - Hockey

Don't mean to sound like Foghorn Leghorn, but does the accuracy of this sentence from a USCHO preview about the John Harvards sound a little bit off? With a new Harvard team on the ice, however, the Crimson is hoping to pull off the type of postseason victories it became famous for in the early 1990s, when it was bringing home national titles. 1990s? Titles? Any theories?by Mark - Hockey
Re: Pull For Harvard? - 21 years ago
Oh you misguided souls. I'm expecting a tight game from the Cantabs, and after the way they played in Albany last weekend, I'm sure BU will be prepared to face Harvard's "A" game. Good luck to the Big Red at the Dunk. If it comes down to BC and Cornell for Buffalo rights, I suppose I should stick behind the Hockey East party, but common decency prevents me from doing so. And if thby Mark - Hockey
Re: Conference Tournaments and Time Off - 21 years ago
Actually, NCAA regional hoop games will be held at the Fleet Center on the weekend of 3/21, and with the Frozen Four being held the second week of April this year (10 and 12) instead of the first, that's why HE teams will have an extended break after the league tourney concludes next weekend and the NCAAs begin on 3/28 and 3/29. I'm definitely a little concerned for BU about the "rust"by Mark - Hockey
Keenan on Cornell - 21 years ago
Don't know if anyone saw it, but in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated (Doug Murray/Stephen Bâby cover ...OK, actually it was a Kentucky basketball player), there was a Pro/Con article about the red line in NHL games. Jeremy Roenick was in favor of getting rid of the red line in NHL games and Mike Keenan was in favor of keeping it. Where does Cornell fit in? Well, part of Keenan's artby Mark - Hockey

Switch BC for Harvard and Hockey East for the ECAC in your post, and Cowbell, you da man.by Mark - Hockey
RPI article in SI (Kobe Bryant cover) - 21 years ago
No, not the Engineers. It's a 4-5 page article detailing the Ratings Percentage Index and the role it plays in selecting the NCAA basketball tournament. I figured there were at least *some* parallels to the hockey selection process, and overall it was a pretty interesting article. You ECAC folks would probably appreciate some references to teams from smaller conferences getting "screwed"by Mark - Hockey
Re: BU Shorthanded? - 21 years ago
I think I like this Adam guy who is an undergrad far more than the Adam who is an alumnus. BU definitely has its work cut out, but, the grave is only half full. I hope the Friars won't provide the final shovel-fulls in a few weeks. Hey, we can't ALL be dominating our leagues you know.by Mark - Hockey

Adam: And here's hoping Harvard shuts youze guys out in the ECAC championship game. So there.by Mark - Hockey
Re: BU Shorthanded? - 21 years ago
Not cheery news for BU fans. And without Freddy Meyer (the Hack for those of you scoring at home) this weekend at Maine due to a shoulder injury, it will be tough. Talk about the crap hitting the fan at the worst possible time of the season. Looks like BU will end up playing at Providence in the best-of-3 HE Quarters with an potential NCAA bid on the line, and given the fact that BU has onlyby Mark - Hockey

Al: Ooops. I had that Montreal jersey number on my mind and thought he wore the same number in Ithaca. I guess Dryden was the Roy Hobbs of Cornell hockey..."the best there ever was."by Mark - Hockey

...This is just sick. Here's a stat on your No. 29 that ran in a Boston Herald college hockey notebook: Cornell great Ken Dryden compiled a 23-0-1 record against the Beanpot schools during his playing career. Which Beanpot school accounted for the tie? Quiz answer: Boston University tied Cornell, 3-3, in 1966-67. Dryden went 7-0 against BC, 6-0-1 against BU, 8-0 against Harvard and 2-0 againsby Mark - Hockey
Re: BU/BC - 21 years ago
Always nice to beat the school from the north end of Comm. Ave, especially under a more intense media glare. But of course this Beanpot title won't mean a thing once league play resumes this weekend. Hopefully, this will be the first step in the stretch drive to Worcester for the Terriers (although there's plenty of potholes remaining on the schedule), and perhaps even a third and final confrontby Mark - Hockey
Re: Synergy - 21 years ago
Hillel: No sweat, I was just giving you and Al a hard time. Anything in Red and White looks good to me. I think I drew the instigator penalty due to my frustration of seeing BU outshoot the No. 5 team in the country 16-4 in its own rink in the first period on Saturday night and still lose. Although it would most likely lead to BU's extinction, I'd like to see a Cornell-BU matchup in the openiby Mark - Hockey
Re: Synergy - 21 years ago
Al/Hillel: Now that you've both shown an obvious lack of decorum with your criticisms concerning the style of BU's jerseys, let's just see you make fun of the striped socks the Terriers wear. You know, the same ones the Big Red wear.by Mark - Hockey
Re: NCAA Playoff Tickets.... - 21 years ago
Sorry, Cowbell, didn't mean to put the Tourney bid before the horse. Oh, and, uh, if you want to purchase Worcester tickets today on Ticketmaster you need a password. And, uh, you didn't hear this from me, but the password is those "silver things" that touch the ice that allow players to skate.by Mark - Hockey
NCAA Playoff Tickets.... - 21 years ago
Go on sale next Friday (12/20) for the 3 games of the "Northeast Regional" that will be played in Worcester on 3/28/03 (doubleheader) and 3/29/03. It's $50 per ticket for the three games, plus the $10 or whatever charge Ticketmaster adds on. No word on when tickets for the "East Regional" in Providence (3/29 & 3/30) go on sale. You could technically see 2 teams qualifby Mark - Hockey

This is part of a post from a BU fan on another message board who was at Lynah for the routs, er, games: "I wasn't too upset with the Cornell games because they are gonna win the National Championship (and trust me, Buffalo will almost be as unbearable with Cornell fans as St. Paul was with Gopher fans). They can score, they are big and physical and can wear opponents down, and yet areby Mark - Hockey

Re: NCAA Tourney - 21 years ago
Jason: Crap shoot it is. I imagine if Cornell wins the regular season and ECAC tournament titles, they would be pretty much guaranteed to stay in the East. Whether that would be Worcester or Providence is anyone's guess. You'll just have to sit tight until 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 23rd when the NCAA Tourney pairings are announced on ESPN.by Mark - Hockey
Re: Giving credit where it's due... - 21 years ago
Jason: It ran in the student paper: I tried to grab the link... After reading through it a second time and realizing that Miller felt Cornell was better than BC, UNH and Maine (teams that BU had played already), I thought, hey, maybe 9-2 for the weekend wasn't so bad after all.by Mark - Hockey

Giving credit where it's due... - 21 years ago
Some quotes on the Big Red from BU defenseman Bryan Miller: With 22 regular season games still to play, time may be on the side of the Boston University hockey team, but history is certainly not. Since 1990, the Terriers have only twice missed qualifying for the NCAA Tournament, with those sub-par seasons coming in 1998-99 and 2000-01. BU went 14-20-3 in each of those seasons, the only two ofby Mark - Hockey
Re: Thoughts of BU-CU & Beyond - 21 years ago
Ben: BC rejects (shudder)? Wow, that's harsh. Maybe Kevin Bacon in "Diner" was right about you guys after all. I'm sure Coach Parker would be the first to admit that Lynah is a very tough place to play. As far as hostile arenas, when Maine is on a roll up at Alfond, that is another very tough place to play.by Mark - Hockey
Congrats to the Big Red - 21 years ago
Al, Jim, Arthur, Greg and the rest of Cornell Nation: Congratulations on your weekend sweep of the Terriers. The Big Red are looking awfully good right now, and if you combine good team defense with good goaltending and good special teams, perhaps it's no mystery why the Terriers never were closer than 2 goals the entire weekend. I expected more out of the Terriers, but truthfully, I thought wiby Mark - Hockey
Re: Think there is time to change his mind... - 21 years ago
Jim: Yes, that's the BU book. I also saw it on the Barnes & Noble web site. Not that it would be of any interest to anybody here, but Bernie also just had a book published on the first 50 years of the Beanpot Tournament, with BU, BC, NU and Harvard all receiving equal billing in what I think is about 300 pages. That one is also available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.by Mark - Hockey
Re: Think there is time to change his mind... - 21 years ago
Johnnie: I heard that about him wanting Harvard as well. But hey, we'll take the Harvard rejects across the rivah. Chris Drury worked out pretty well, and this year freshman forward John LaLiberte looks like he'll do some good things for BU in the future. Can you imagine if this Boyle kid ever got the chance to play with Bâby or your Swedish Irishman on the blue line? Talk about opposingby Mark - Hockey
