Discussions about the Cornell men's and women's hockey teams
Re: Other tournies - 22 years ago
Lowell leads Northeastern 1-0 after one in an empty Tsongas Arena. You'd think there was a measles outbreak again. Maine 3-1 after one over a depleted BC team.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Stupid playoffs - 22 years ago
I'm with you, Graham. If you can lose a semi or a final, (or, one last time, a PIG) in one game, why not a quarter/quint? The single game quarterfinal format worked fine for many, many years in the ECAC (on Tuesday night, no less), until some ECAC genius came up with the "best-two-out-of-two-plus-minigame" and then "first-to-three-points" formats.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: A Modest DVD Proposal - 22 years ago
There was a 25th anniversary reunion of the 1970 team in Ithaca. Resulted in a quite large NY Times article. Both the '67 and '70 teams were honored at the hockey team's golf outing and banquet in July 2000. Many players were there (including Dryden) and Ned was the guest of honor. Nice time.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: A Modest DVD Proposal - 22 years ago
Sam Woodside ranked right up there with Yogi: "...Dartmouth in their dark green uniforms; Cornell wearing dark white..." Maybe Laura can tell us if any "ancient treasures" really do exist in the archives. I'd sure be interested. Along the same lines, info on this weekend's annual athletic rummage sale is located here:by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Right on, Ken. Compared with the cheerleading bozos at most other rinks, Arthur is a real class act, and, in my opinion, adds a lot to the hockey program.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

>"It may be because I am old and grey, but not quite old and grey enough, that I begin every year with the idea that winning the ECAC tournament is *the* mark of success for the season." I am, truth be told, "old and grey enough," but still say a hearty "amen." Championships are remembered, not appearances.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Possibly Taping Of Saturday Playoff Game - 22 years ago
Thom, the NESN web site says "ECAC quarterfinal" is scheduled for Saturday, March 9, at 7pm. Sounds like we eastern Mass types will really get to see it.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Plus / Minus - 22 years ago
I'd guess the ODOYs are usually the two defensemen named to the all-ECAC team.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: If The Season Ended Today - 22 years ago
I'd sure like it, John, if you could find a way for us to play St. Cloud instead. They've never won an NCAA tournament game. (Presumes, of course, we are given the opportunity to play at all.)by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: TUC - 22 years ago
Your point about the "last 16" criterion is valid, John, but I find it less objectionable than TUC because it's something a team influences directly--by winning or losing its games. Cornell has played hard these last games to make its "last 16" as strong as possible. Also, a team's record in the "last 16" is compared directly with every other team's, whereas TUCby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Underhill - 22 years ago
Jayson Moy described it on a USCHO thread as "Underhill went down hard" in warmups.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: TUC - 22 years ago
Technically true, apple. But the point is, whether a team finishes at/above .500 vs. below .500 can have significant impact on the rankings of others--because that team goes from "counting fully" to "not counting at all" in TUC. And what difference does it really mean for Union to be .500 or .485 in terms of the their difficulty as an opponent. It would not be inconceivabby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: TUC - 22 years ago
The in/out" feature" of TUC is absurd. And how does PWR account for Colgate being a different team in Jan/Feb than it was in Nov/Dec? Or Brown? Or Lowell? Or Union? Or Harvard?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: loss vs dartmouth could have been biggest game of season.......... - 22 years ago
Speaking of the wonderful hockey cam...Age, have you been made whole on this yet?by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: End-of-R.S. Stats - 22 years ago
Some other nums: Games trailing after third period: 3 (BU#1, OSU, Dartmouth#1) Games giving up more than 3 goals in regulation: 2 (BU#1, Dartmouth#1) Record against ECAC non-Ivies: 11-0-1; against Ivies: 6-3-1by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Underhill - 22 years ago
Dunno. Kelly Hughes was at the game Friday night but was not dressed. I don't recall hearing his name tonight--or any other than the usual suspects.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Underhill - 22 years ago
I recall Grady saying he was really favoring the injured leg.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Underhill - 22 years ago
Grady gave a long dissertation about how if you were on the road and had a goalie injured you could play with only one goalie dressed and not be penalized. So I'm guessing only LeNeveu was dressed.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Who will we play next? - 22 years ago
Danis vs. Dov. I smell an upset. Cornell and Clarkson don't get much reward for their hard work.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Those are total shots, not shots on goal, but still...by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Last I heard Princeton was three goals up on sucking Harvard, so welcome Old Eli.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Mark Anbinder, tell Grady the "Chief's" name is Mark Burdyl.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey
Re: Off topic: Lacrosse - 22 years ago
Georgetown 8, Cornell 5. Wait 'til next year. At the half Georgetown had 32 shots, Cornell had 4. Score was 2-0 Georgetown.by Al DeFlorio - Hockey

Re: PWR 3/1 - 22 years ago
Am I wrong, or do we now lose the direct comparisons with four of the teams clustered around us in the PWR rankings: BU, Maine, Michigan, and Michigan State (and all four because RPI is the tiebreaker). And aren't the last at-large teams chosen on the basis of direct comparisons? I could be wrong, but I think the only way to turn these around would be RPI, and that seems unlikely given relatiby Al DeFlorio - Hockey
