Cornell vs. #1 Notre Dame, Sunday 4/14 12:30 on Long Island at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium (LIU Stadium), Old Westbury. Seats "over 6,000." Tickets via Cornell link, $25 including parking. HS game Manhasset vs Shoreham Wading River boys lax follows. Be worth getting tickets in advance. The Irish have a large NYC contingent, it could sell out.

Notre Dame has been #1 all season. One loss early, Feb. 25, 11-10 OT to Georgetown, at home. Wins of 3 goals or less, all in the last 4 games:
13-10 @ Ohio State
14-12 Syracuse
15-12 @ Duke

Major implications for raising our ranking, RPI and playoff seeding. Media Poll has us #8 and the top Ivy after Syracuse and Brown games. RPI has us #10, Yale #8.

I didn't watch a lot of the ND-Duke program, but ND is super fast. I think one of their middies is a wide receiver on the football team. We're going to need to be really good on our slides, shows, and recoveries.

On the other hand, I think we can score on these guys. I hope CJ and Long get going early.

Sorry to post this here, but the Ticket Exchange is essentially for hockey, and that season is kaputsky. If anyone wants two free tickets (single QR code in email) for today's incredible Lax tilt, text me at 646-234-0793. My loss is your gain. If I don't respond within 30 minutes, the tix are gone. Big shooters from Notre Dame. We need to get sticks on those guys.

The last man advantage Mikey Long had an open shot and didn't take it. I think we're working too hard for the perfect shot.

11-7 ND at the half.

If we can tighten up on defense, we can win this game.

We've wasted a couple of great saves through bad clears. Sure, ND's good at riding, but we're throwing it away too often.

I can see a path for a comeback.

Bit of a heartbreaker, but I bet Notre Dame doesn't want to have to face Cornell again.

I was mostly hoping that Cornell would win so they'd stay North if they get to the second round of the NCAAs. Any chance that still happens? (A LOT of lacrosse to go to even qualify for the tournament at all, let alone the second round, but I'm just wondering.)

Should have won that one.

Both teams had mistakes the last 2 minutes. I feel had Goldstein made that pass, we win. Wild finish.

cornell needs to win the next 2 to make sure that even get into the tourney.

Still had the ball late and a bad TO.. That was a story all day though with to many unforced turnovers.

Refs blew the non-call. The idea that refs should call the game differently in the final minutes is the absolute stupidest notion in sports. Then Cornell blew the pass to the open man. It would be a shame if this costs them the NCAA tournament.

Goldstein had a bit of a rough game with a couple of turnovers-we forget this is only his 5th or 6th game. Also Notre Dame seemed to be winning groundballs late in game-but Cornell proved they belong up there with the best.

Give him credit for that sharp-angle goal coming from behind the cage to tie the game at 13(?). That was amazing.

If we can stay with Notre Dame for 58 minutes, Harvard (senior day at Cornell) and Dartmouth should be no problem, um, right? And we'll deserve home ice in the NCAA first round, right?

Those who attended the game did not hear, for better or worse, the pitter-patter of the announcers, such as, "Not only is this a barn-burner, but three rows of the corn came down" and something about "Taco Bell dirty [filthy?]. The only one that was worth a smile was after Ryan Goldstein tied the game: "Not only is he skinny as a chimney sweep, but he's got the hands of a mohel." I was half expecting them to bring out Joe Pesci to sing "Yo Cousin Vinnie," or maybe a cameo by Nadine Menendez. Yeah, I know, that's New Jersey not the Guyland but close enough.

Nice that the event had a VIP tent just outside the end zone, and sideline seating but, judging by the slow return of many fans after the half, alcohol may have been on-site.

Always great to see the camera pan a section that's say 85% full and then within 30 seconds the announcers say there isn't an empty seat in the house.

What a coincidence: The two announcers are Corrigans, the event seems to have been produced and broadcast by Corrigan Enterprises and, who, isn't the Notre Dame coach a Corrigan? Surprised there wasn't some more national advertising: premium cars, travel, spirits love high-net-worth viewers.

So let's see where we move to in RPI and in the polls. I'd say we belong in the top five. I had fears of a 10-goal ND win. Now I'm struggling to process why if we can back all the way we couldn't have found one last goal. Sort of like Cornell-Denver in Springfield two weeks ago. Ah, that's sports.

That line reminded me of one of the truly great SNL ad parodies. The actual ad extolled the smooth ride of a Lincoln by showing a diamond cutter practicing his craft in the backseat. The SNL takeoff substituted a mohel with a baby boy in his lap.

For an ND broadcasting team, I thought they weren't too homerish, and at times somewhat amusing. The color guy had done his homework. His insights were often helpful.

I think they used our Schoellkopf camera person with the closeups and lost balls. Also, maybe it was my equipment, but the picture was jittery at times. My eyeballs danced.

We played really good defense in the second half, and at times, great defense, causing at least two shot clock violations against the best offense in the country. We just need to do that all four quarters. I don't know what's keeping us from getting after it from the first faceoff.

We've improved over the year, and that has always been the key to our postseason aspirations. We are beasts on rides and ground balls. We have tough FOGO and a solid goalie. We have a rock star offense. If we can be a little more stubborn on defense, this season may be a heckuva ride yet.

Both teams used two faceoff players. All I felt was we were about 50% and that was good for the past half-doze years. Stats do show it was 6-3 Notre Dame in the fourth quarter, which supports your point.

FACE OFFS
Cornell 5	6	5	3	19
Notre Dame	5	4	4	6	19

Another killer stat: ND was hitting on 75% of extra-man opportunities going in, I heard, and was 2x2 Sunday. We were 1x4. Team stats:[cornellbigred.com]

Despite the loss, it was a both a great college lax game and venue at Bethpage Stadium. Given the concentration of Cornell alumni in the NY Metro area along with two NYC campuses, it's like a home game for the Big Red.

In terms of the game, the non-call on the push from behind was ridiculous and even the play-by-play guy was surprised the refs didn't call it. Oh well.............too late now. Go Big Red!

I thought Booker and George (brothers, cousins of ND coach Kevin) did a great job, far superior to the Quint/Carc clown car. Booker does play-by-play for ESPN (when the clowns are elsewhere) and CBS, and IMO is always very good. Booker's company Corrigan Sports produced the event, which seems to have been a huge success (attendance 7480)

Speaking of Corrigan, he's been the head coach at ND for 36 years. He's had time to figure it out.

Although I am very much not a fan of Corrigan's screamer style, what he has accomplished at ND is impressive. ND was nothing in the lax world when he arrived in 1988. In 2009 (I know, that year does not actually exist for Cornell lax fans), ND went 15-0 in the regular season, and got ... the #7 seed. Then, to prove they didn't deserve better, ND lost to unseeded Maryland in the first round. 2010 was the breakthrough year: ND was unseeded, but proceeded to upset #6 Princeton, #3 Maryland, and (gulp!) #7 Cornell before falling to #5 Duke in the final, 6-5 in OT, almost certainly the most boring lax final ever played. But now ND had some real cred in the lax world.

I hope this kind of game becomes an institution, much the way the annual MSG game is for hockey.
