I went to my first Cornell baseball game of the year today and my first ever at Booth field. Starting with the game, Cornell pitched a gem until the ninth and played sound defense to complete the sweep. Although we are playing well in the Ivy so far and the league seems weak this year I doubt that we will really be able to compete with Penn or Columbia, I’m hoping for a top half of the league finish. Cornell’s jerseys are pretty sweet but I bet they won’t be so glad when they’re wearing black while playing on turf on a 90 degree day in may.

As for the new field, I don’t love it. The one thing that I do like is the vibe of literally being out in the middle of a field playing baseball. To start the negatives off, the place was no more than 15 percent full but the parking lot had no spots so I had to park at the soccer practice fields and walk about a quarter of a mile through a field of tall grass to get the the field. It wasn’t too bad today but on a wetter day or in the late spring when it is overgrown that just won’t be feasible. Oh, and you can’t find the field on Apple Maps or google maps so you better just remember where it is. Saving the most obvious for last, it is just too far out of the way. It was nice seeing some older people and families out there but there were almost no students, presumably due to the location. I miss the central location of Hoy field and I have so many good memories of biking to the top of the parking garage and watching games from there. The new facilities and buildings out at Booth seem nice but I would have much preferred they stayed at Hoy.

I have never seen a ball field with square foul areas. That's weird-looking.

Edit: Took a look at some other pictures and it's not as square as it appears.

Well I was wrong, we can hang with Penn and now we’re second in the Ivy League and 2 games up on third place. I’m very excited to see where this season goes.

Cornell rallied from an 8-0 deficit to win Game 1 against Yale 10-9 in 10 innings on Saturday and went on to sweep the doubleheader. Cornell is 10-4 in the Ivies, only one game behind first-place Columbia. Cornell plays Yale again today and hosts Columbia for a three-game series next weekend. No one else is over .500 in the Ivy League.

Unfortunately Cornell couldn't pull off the series sweep. At 10-5 in Ivy play, Cornell trails only league leader Columbia by 1.5 and has a two-game lead over third place Princeton. Behind 8-7 Princeton are three teams at 7-8 and another at 6-9.
