I watched the replay of the Hobart game. It was a resounding win, of course, although the offense did not seem to be playing well together early on. A lot of the goals were unassisted. Hobart was just not playing great individual defense.

On defense, Jack Follows played really well. Dooley played tough also. Overall, there were not a lot of free hands in shooting range for Hobart all day. Our riding game is terrific. It worked down the shot clock and caused some turnovers.

We worked hard on the ground balls. Good to see.

FOGO is a little bit of a worry. We had some difficulties with penalties and winning the face-offs early on. Petrakis settled things down there with the clamp and scrape (although he did take a very questionable shot at goal). I'm hopeful he can carry us. He helped win some important games down the stretch a couple of years ago.

We are deep in talent. Firth has terrific vision and skills. Gilmarten looks like he's going to be really good one. I'd like to see more of Ben Abladian. He has a hard, accurate shot and a quick release.

I hope we have another good day today!

this was with ~5 seconds left in the quarter. great use of the shot clock and then working the goal as a screen. genuine shame about the injury; the pbp guy made him sound like a very important defender.

Cornell win. 15-11

A win is a win is a win.

The commentator marveled at how well a so-so OSU was playing. But the reason is that our defense was not playing well early. They OSU ball carriers simply ran around our shorties on three or four goals, and we didn't slide. A couple of more mistakes led to easy goals later. The defense clamped down much better later in the game. We need to play with this intensity all four quarters if we are going to be successful against a tough schedule.

Drizzly, cold (43 at 12 noon faceoff), thus only 212 fans. This is the kind of game that would benefit from being played in the pending field house.

The offense is ahead of the defense. Saturday so much was CJ Kirst, an amazing 7G 1A day and Michael Long 3G 4A. Otherwise five players with single goals.

The Willem Firth goal to build Cornell's first 3-point lead, late in the third, pass from Long as the shot clock was running down IIRC, shot seemed like an inch above the ground all the way in. Firth really is going to be someone special.

We had problems on faceoffs: OSU 18, Cornell 12. Cornell was better on saves. And near perfect on clears, 22x23 vs TOSU's 15x19. Everything else on stats was not a difference maker. Wyatt Knust was 54% on saves, State's Caleb Fyock was 42% and that's filling a lot of the net (6-foot-2, 297 pounds). He's highly regarded in his freshman year but, ah, maybe we shoot better.

Seriously. All this indoor facilities stuff is starting to sound like Syracuse people and their Dome affection. Typical Ithaca weather is home field advantage. I hope they don't play every game that isn't in billhoward approved weather conditions indoors once the practice facility is completed.

They will play every game outside that they can.

If the game looks like it will have lightening before it starts, they might play inside. If it looks like hurricane weather they might go inside. If it looks like a mighty ice/snowstorm throughout and hard to keep the field clean they might go inside. 45 and drizzle, they won't go inside.

For the most part they will want to make the decision in advance

The real purpose of the facility is for practices, obviously. Not only will it be more pleasant for the players, it will be safer and less costly to keep the practice facility in good shape. It is one thing to "plow" the field to remove several inches of snow before a game, it is quite another to do it a couple of times a day so two teams have a clear surface to practice effectively without the threat of injury. Same with heavy rain -- sure you can play in it but it is hard to develop skills, run hard, etc., in the rain on a slippery surface. Not to mention the help with recruiting kids not used to upstate NY weather. When ND was recruiting my son, photos of the team practicing indoors in February were all over their recruiting materials.

200 people in attendance. Temps in the 40s. Raining. Some Cornell players have experience in box lacrosse where it doesn't rain? If there's an indoor field available, why would you not play it there? ... because we might or might not fare better at home in crappy weather than an Ohio State team that has roughly the same weather the second day of March? Next year, same weekend, it might be snowing and the choice is a neutral quonset hut in Binghamton?

The attendance would be 200 inside too.

It's not box lacrosse.

It snowed during the women's game against Cal and... They played outside.

If it's 95 in May, should it be moved inside because it's too hot?

It's a practice facility. Not an all games before the weather is nice facility. Lacrosse has been played in 40s and rain forever. And should continue to be played outdoors in those conditions.

Cornell lacrosse in polls in Week 4 of the 2024 season, after weekend of March 4

Cornell in Media poll by week
Pre-season 7
Week 1 8
Week 2 8
Week 3 9 after @ Denver loss
Week 4 8

Current media poll (image below) and Quint Kessenich (Lax All-Stars) have Denver No. 1.

Quint Kessenich 3/4/24
Pios holding pocket aces, wins over Johns Hopkins and Cornell. A 5-5 tie ballooned into a 15-6 win holding Lemoyne to one goal in the second half. Do I think Denver is the best team? No. But right now they are unbeaten and have two quality wins.

I have never had more difficulty putting a poll together. Everybody is 4-1. Small sample sizes. Confusing cross pollination. A jumbled mess. [laxallstars.com]

Attendance is always light for early lacrosse games at Cornell. Saturday was either raining or misty, along with damp cold. However, if the sunshine comes out above say 50 degrees the East Hill community comes out to support the lacrosse team. I wish Cornell had more home games in April & May when the weather improves.

On another note, the Cornell Daily Sun appears to be very focused on politics and other campus negative stuff, and not Big Red athletics, etc. I wish they would cover some more positive aspects about Cornell like sports. I realize we are an Ivy League school and everyone is on social media these days, but getting outside to watch Big Red athletics or just going for a walk is a much healthier alternative. JMHO

I intend to. Haven't checked on whether it has to be canceled or you can specify just a one-month subscription for one school so it expires automatically.

I bought this last year to watch the @OSU game. I watch enough lacrosse generally that I talked myself into the Lacrosse sport package, which gave access to all lacrosse games for all the Big Ten schools, so any good or interesting OSU, PSU, Rutgers, etc. game. I think it was ~$40 for the whole year/season

Are you sure semsox? I think a lot of the Big Ten games are on BTN only, not B1G+.

That's a fair point CU77, and unfortunately the landscape for this is changing every year. I'm not sure how common airing on BTN is vs. going to BTN+. As an example, for this weekend, all of Cornell @ PSU, Brown @ MD, ND @ OSU (Sat games), and Princeton @ Rutgers, Harvard @ Michigan (Sun games) are available through B1G+. It may be that once it's well into conference season and there's no Basketball or Wrestling to compete that lacrosse games will be aired more regularly on BTN, but still a worthwhile consideration for us lacrosse junkies.
