Note from new coach Tyler Nase -

I am proud to report the team went 3 for 4 against Princeton yesterday retaining both the Platt Cup and the Harriot Cup with wins in the 1V, 3V, and 4V. Race conditions were ideal with low current and a slight varying southeast tail. It was a beautiful bright sunny day in Ithaca.

BTW, Nase is a Princeton grad.

Very interesting. See the very last sentence of the email below. As a donor, I get regular communications from Cornell rowing. I never received any notice about Chris Kerber’s departure. Given the lack of a prior announcement, I assume he was terminated. It certainly can’t be for lack of success, because that’s apparently not one of the things Noel worries about. Has anyone heard anything?

Nase Named Cornell’s Henry E. Bartels ’48 Coach Of Men’s Lightweight Rowing.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Tyler Nase, an Olympic oarsman for the US Rowing team, a decorated Ivy League competitor as an undergraduate, and a rising star in the coaching profession, has been named the Henry E. Bartels ’48 Head Coach of Men’s Lightweight Rowing on an interim basis . . .

Nase fills the vacancy created by Chris Kerber's departure in mid-November.

As this was a personnel matter, no one in the know as talked about it.

I believe Todd sent out a very cursory note a month or so ago suggesting that Chris had moved on. My assumption is also that he was let go but I have zero insight into what happened, though the silence suggests it probably wasn't something good.

The last email that I received from Chris was on November 5, just before the Princeton Chase and not too long before he was apparently terminated. Four national championships in 11 years and a gold in the Head of the Charles a couple of years ago, yet Archer persists. Must have been something pretty awful.

Either Syracuse has lower standards than Cornell, or whatever caused Kerber to leave Cornell wasn't enough to dissuade Syracuse from hiring him.

Well, apparently, it wasn’t hitting on female coxswains!

GENEVA, N.Y.— Hobart and William Smith Colleges Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics and Recreation Brian Miller recently announced that Chris Kerber will serve as the head coach of Hobart rowing for the 2023-24 season. . .

“Hiring an elite professional like Chris is an investment in excellence,” Bugenhagen said. “He possesses the rare blend of expertise, dedication and innovation that can build on Hobart rowing’s deep history of success and championships. I’m very excited to partner with Coach Kerber and create one of the best environments for student-athletes in collegiate rowing here at Hobart and William Smith Colleges.”

I’d really like to know what he did at Cornell that got him fired. Apparently, two other schools with significant rowing programs don’t have a problem with him.

Lightweight Rowing takes gold in 4+ and bronze in 8+ at the Head of the Charles.

Thank you for the updates. Very impressive results. As someone who rowed as a freshman but had to work during my subsequent years on the hill, it is nice to hear about the team.

Cornell lightweights posted a win at the Princeton Chase, beating crews that they lost to at the HOC.

"Our A boat brought home the WIN in the Lightweight 8+! With a time of 13:00.3, we finished 6 seconds in front of second place Princeton. This time would have also had us 3rd place in the Heavyweight category. 2018 was the last time we won the lightweight 8+ at the Chase. Coming off the 3rd place finish at the Charles, this crew was hungry to show what they were capable of.

Our B entry was 2nd compared to other B entries and finished 5th overall. They finished .3 seconds behind Princeton's B boat, but they were able to beat Navy and Penn’s A boats times. They were also only 2 seconds off 3rd place Georgetown’s A boat. Our C entry was 1st amongst C entries and finished 9th overall. They finished in front of Navy and Georgetown's B boat. Our D entry was 10th overall and edged out Penn’s C entry by 2 seconds. They also beat Navy and Georgetown's B entries."

From Nicki Moore —

“I am excited to share the news that Tyler Nase has accepted my offer to continue to serve as the Henry E. Bartels ‘48 Head Coach of Lightweight Rowing, a position he has held on an interim basis since December 2022.”

Geez, that's almost as long as getting academic tenure.
