Garrett looked generally off. Moisey was scoring on him in a way that he never gets scored on. Just clean shots on his legs and Garrett couldn't sprawl or counter.

Grey did a great job for 6:40. He looked devastated that he gave up the late TD but he'd have had to defend for another minute even if he made it to the end of the period. By the time he got the TD, Taylor could smell blood. Grey nearly got a TD at his one opportunity but… nearly = 0 points.

CV with a great finish. So proud of the way he stepped up and got the TDs he needed. Great work on both. Plus, Cobb knocked off Sorensen! CV lost at the Penn dual in SV but I have confidence.

Realbuto was a goddamn monster. I loved that match.

Didn't get to pay attention to the Palacio match. Looked like he just couldn't handle Jordan's strength. He may have to face the 11 seed in his next match.

Dean suffered from the same problem as Garrett but won his match on conditioning; by the end of the match Dudley was gassed and could feel it. He was able to take Dudley down at will and had just enough time. Dechow and Abounader lost, so the top half got a little easier (if you trust chalk).

I'd like to see our guys climb back from the bottom now. All three guys with winnable matches.

Pickett lost another match he could have won by a single point. Rough tournament for him.
Bennett was great. 11-1 MD and dominated from the whistle.
JAP was strong. Rode the entire second period, got a second stalling point then got a late takedown to win 5-0.

QF:
Villalonga 4-1 win over Cobb. Never in doubt. First time AA for CV. In the semis, #1 Houdashelt (Mizzou).
Realbuto 11-9 SV win over Miller. HOLY CRAP. Down a lot late, he got two takedowns in the last 30 seconds to tie and then a quick TD in SV to win. WOW! In the semis, #3 Ness (Minnesota).
Dean 3-2 win over Brooks. In the semis, #13 Avery (Edinboro).

Consolation
125: Garrett went down early 5-0 but was able to fight his way back for a 10-6 win. Next faces #10 Rios (Oregon State) with the winner to face #12 Mines (Edinboro) for AA.
133: Grey manhandled. 6-1 loss. Needs to get stronger and to be more aggressive.
165: Palacio with a 8-6 win next faces #4 Sulzer (Virginia) with the winner to face #7 Harger (Northwestern) for AA - but Harger defaulted his last match and may be unable to wrestle. Palacio may also have reinjured his knee, though probably not badly enough to not even take the mat against Sulzer.
197: Bennett with big 10-8 win. Dominant second period, got RT and 3 NF (and almost a fall) against a guy he couldn't take down on his feet. Up next, #15 Studebaker (Nebraska) with the winner to face #5 Schiller (Minnesota) for AA.
Hwt: Aiken-Phillips with a 10-4 loss. Outwrestled; nearly pinned in the first, did well to keep it below a major.

Realbuto with an absolutely stunning come-from-behind SV!!!!

Brian was down 4-8 or 5-8 and came back to 9-9 before getting a TD for the SV. His opponent had 4 beautiful takedowns and accumulated riding time but Brian never quit.

By the end, he had more motor and he realized that he didn't have to be as defensive - he could score if he took the shot. Boom Boom Boom. Amazing.

There's talk on ESPNU of some sort of scoring mistake and the NCAA is looking into reversing the Realbuto decision.

Still under review. Apparently the Kent State kid didn't get credit for an escape, which would have given him a one point lead and the match wouldn't have gone to OT. Unfair either way, since if the score were correct during the match Realbuto would have wrestled differently.

Important match for the team standings beyond what it means for Realbuto individually.

Consolation 3:
125: Garrett with a dominant 13-3 MD to move to the R12, one win from AA. Looking good after yesterday's loss. To be fair, the guy who beat him has kept winning into the semis.
167: Palacio with a tough 7-6 loss. He had a lead late in the second period but really got outwrestled for a lot of the match and Sulzer was able to finally finish a TD with about 7 seconds left to get the win. He'll be back next year (after soccer season).
197: Bennett LBF. Damn. Rode hard for almost all of the second, but gave up a reversal with 5 seconds left. Then in the second, Studebaker just did an amazing job of getting his legs in and turning Bennett from the top and pushing his shoulders to the mat.

Cornell has three in the semis (Villalonga, Realbuto and Dean) and one in the R12 (Garrett).

Action tonight at 8pm Eastern.

Gad. Another Fifth Down game.

One could easily argue that the competitors measure how much they have to make up to come back and tie or go ahead. If it gets reversed, coach Mike is gonna go ballistic, and it's not even his sport.

the RealButo thing is getting alot of play.. but they all seem to ignore the fact that each guy new the score and wrestled the end out far different than they may have. realbuto had the kid with his back almost exposed and you can see him watching the clock and no trying until the last second to get the back points. who knows what he may have done if desparate

Work found a particularly lousy weekend to heat up, but thank you everyone for the updates. Objectively very good results in St. Louis (one sophomore champ, one sophomore runner-up, two more all-americans, and a top 5 finish), but you can read a "what if" tone in Rob's post-NCAA wrap-up. I guess is says good things about the program when the team finishes 5th (and four points out of 3rd) without a single guy beating seed.

Still, it was a great season and my hat is off to all four of our all-americans (and really everyone).

What's amazing about this tournament is how close we came to third overall and also how close we came to total disaster.

If Palacio had hung on for just a few more seconds, he'd have beaten the #4 wrestler in the country in the 4th consolation round. He'd have won the next match by forfeit, as the opponent was injured in his quarterfinals match. That forfeit would have made Palacio an All-American. That's two wins in the consolation bracket at 1/2 point apiece, 2 points for the forfeit and at least three for finishing 8th (and a chance to finish as high as third). At least 6 points if he could have lasted another seven seconds.* We finished 4 points behind Edinboro for third.

On the other hand, as a guy on a wrestling forum I read pointed out:
At 149, Villalonga, who finished in 6th overall, won his second round match in SV.
At 157, Realbuto, who finished 2d overall, kinda sorta lost his quarterfinal match but Kent State didn't properly protest.**
At 184, Dean, who won the national title, had to come from way behind to win by 1 in the second round, won by 1 in the QF and won on riding time criteria in double OT in the SF.

Three teams finished within 10 points of us. Any one of those changes could have dropped us even lower in the standings.

But I'd be remiss if I didn't specifically congratulate Garett, Villalonga, Garrett, Realbuto and especially Dean for finishing AA and Grey, Palacio, Pickett and Aiken-Phillips for qualifying. And thanks to all the wrestlers - especially the seniors - who toughened the starters up in the workout room.

This sport is fun as hell.

* And, to be honest, it's unclear why the ref awarded the takedown against Palacio when he did. If he was going to call it, he should have called it seven or eight seconds earlier, instead, he let Palacio cling on, thinking it was a neutral position, to either run out the clock or have them both stand for stalemate, but the position never changed. The ref just eventually decided that it was enough to give the points.

** There is a counterargument here, which is that Realbuto may have scored more if he knew the scoreboard was wrong but that only helps mitigate the injustice. The scoreboard was wrong and the Kent State kid got screwed.

How does Edinboro continue to compete against programs with 1000x the assets and profile? I'm sure they must have some legendary coach, but even then... how?
It's the system

Probably the same way Johns Hopkins competes in lacrosse. Wrestling is their only Division I program and Pennsylvania/New Jersey has great high school wrestling to recruit from. Their current coach is not "legendary" but he took over the program from the truly legendary Bruce Baumgartner, who is still the AD.

can someone give me a brief explanation how you finish with a negative team score?

You can get a penalty, which takes away points, for inappropriate conduct. I'm guessing the team in question had maybe one wrestler entered and in his one match (which he lost, probably, so no positive points), he or his coaches were hit with a penalty.

For example, Missouri's Johnny Eblen was DQ'd for a headbutt in his match, costing his team all of the points Eblen had earned to that point plus an additional 3 point penalty. We beat Penn 32 - -1 last year because we swept all the matches AND Penn got hit with a one point penalty against the coaching staff.

Hopefully someone started a "Frustrated" chant when that happened.
