Columbia @ Cornell football - Cor 24-9

Gorgeous weather in Ithaca, Jeff Matthews is standing on the sidelines with a headset on, sophomore Jeff Few is in at QB, and the Fox College Sports TV picture looks like a webcast feed.

Final, Cornell 24-9. The 1-8 team is indeed superior to the Columbia team whose last win came in the wake of Hurricane Sandy last year, against Cornell. All this without Jeff Matthews, injured (undisclosed) and on the sidelines.

Unbeaten Princeton wallops Yale 59-23. Harvard chokes but not badly enough, beats Penn 38-30 after leading 38-0. Dartmouth edges Brown 24-20. Princeton wins next week at Dartmouth and it owns the Ivy title outright. Princeton loses to
Dartmouth, Harvard beats Yale, and it's a tie. Penn now with 2 Ivy losses is out of it. Cornell has heavy lifting next weekend at Penn.

Nice job by Cornell and a nice way for the seniors to go out in their home finale. Or as the Fox announcer said (paraphrasing here), "There are no scholarships in the Ivy League ... and that's why you see all the smiles from the parents on senior day. They're [almost] done paying."

Nice to see Fox used the yellow first down marker for such a minor game. Too bad the video quality was terrible (was it a web feed and not a satellite feed?). Fox didn't know who the young woman in the wheelchair was in the Matthews family photo (Jeff's sister) or if David Archer is the youngest coach in college football (in D1, yes). Next week Fox broadcasts Brown-Columbia when it really should be Princeton-Dartmouth with cut-ins to Yale-Harvard. (Unless Harvard game is on another network).

No Jeff Matthews but:

Sophomore James Few, 14x17 178 yards passing 2 TDs 0 Ints
Freshman Robert Somborn, 3x3 49 yards
Box score: [www.cornellbigred.com]
Attendance: 3073 (ouch, especially for a sunny, 60-degree day

Cornell up 3-0 in the first when a drive stalls just outside the red zone. Harvard is clobbering Penn at the half and hoping Princeton stumbles vs Yale today (Princeton 7-6 in the first) or next week at Dartmouth.

10-3 in the second. 10-6 Cornell at the half: In the final minute, Cornell punts, Columbia marches quickly up field, gets helped by a roughing the passer call, TD toss caught just out of bounds in end zone, Columbia settles for a field goal.

Cornell's Sidearm stats shows no stats but I believe the Fox announcers said that Cornell QB James Few's only incompletion was his last throw of the first half. Based on seeing him just for this brief time, we will start out 2014 okay at quarterback.

Q3: Cornell 17, Columbia 9 after 3. Freshman QB is also playing, no Matthews.

Other Ivies:

Harvard goes up 38-0 on Penn start of Q3, Penn misses a 4th down pass in final minute and Crimson win 38-30.

Princeton up 31-13 on Yale at the half.

Ivy Digital doesn't have video. Maybe the Fox coverage explains that?

Too bad Princeton-Yale isn't the featured game on NBCSN, it's a hoot (21-13 Princeton, still in the first quarter).

Somewhere in Cornell's game notes it says the game is blacked out because of Fox Sports coverage. I don't why it can't be simul-webcast with the commercials carried, too. I trust Ivy Digital gets rights to the game for replay and w/o the commercials. The IL turns out enough lawyers to negotiate this.
