I'm no expert at reading the bracket but it looks like Manson is in one of the first matches of the day.
We're heading for the Wells Fargo Center as I write this. I can see it from our hotel window. I'm expecting this to be very close among Cornell, Penn State, Iowa, and maybe Oklahoma State.

Manson lost his pigtail 8-3 to a guy from Boise. Wasn't particularly close.

In the first round:

125: #11 Perrelli escapes with a 4-3 win over NDSU. Will face #6 Bedelyon (VA Tech)

133: #8 Grey wins 11-5 over Oregon State. Will face #9 Carter (VA Tech)

141: Manson loses his pigtail to BSU. He'll face (Millersville) in the consolation pigtail; willer to face (Utah Valley State). Both unranked. (The wrestler who beat Manson was pinned in his first round match. Ugh.)

149: #4 Dake MD 9-0 over CMU. He'll face Gillespie (Edinboro)

157: Meagher loses 1-4 to #1 Hall (BSU) (tough draw). He is going to face Sulzer (EMU), who was destroyed 13-4 by a wrestler Meagher beat earlier this year.

165: #9 Kerber wins 2-1 over Abdurakhmanov (Clarion) on a late penalty point for fleeing the mat. He'll face #8 Winston (Rutgers), who beat him at EIWA.

174: #3 Lewnes wins 7-2 over Meys (Screw BU). He'll face Nick Purdue (Ohio).

184: #3 Bosak TF 15-0 over Dieckhaus (NIU). He'll face Meredith (Arizona St.)

197: #1 Simaz wins 6-2 over Smith (Cal Poly). He'll face Johnson (Nebraska).

That wraps up the first round. Cornell goes 7-2 with a couple of close calls and only one disappointing loss.

What's a pigtail?
It is the inverse of a bye; instead of getting a pass into the next round, a few wrestlers have an extra match before the first round. Imagine a bracket with 33 wrestlers; in order to get down to 32, two wrestlers are placed in a pigtail round to go to the "first" round.

I had to look it up myself. Looks to be basically a "play-in" game to get to a regular bracket. Like the 64-65 game that the squeakball tournament decided to have a couple years ago or the play-in game that the ECAC did for a few years in Lake Placid for their Championship weekend.

I think I heard squeakball did something different this year, but I'm not paying a lick of attention to that tournament.

Squeakball did four pigtail games this year, for a total of 68 teams in the tournament.

The Div. III hockey tournament, incidentally, also involves three pigtails - it's an eleven-team field, which strikes me as odd, given that Div. III has over seventy teams, while Div. I only has 58.

Maybe there are a lot of autobids and they didn't want to push out the at-large bids from the traditionally stronger conferences?

I meant that I thought it was strange that they don't have a 16-team tournament, not strange that they don't have an 8-team tournament.

Is team scoring a simple function of x points for advancing to this round, y for this round, etc?

It also figures how the match was won, more points for a win by 8 or more points, even more for a technical fall (15 points), and the most points for a pin.

Iowa went 10-1. They had 9 wrestlers and won 2 pigtails. They had one MD. Penn State went 8-1 with 2 pins and 2 MDs.

For bonus points, Cornell got a MD and a TF.

The evening session starts at 6:30. I believe the consolation matches first, then Round 2.

This is big for Dake, as it opens up the top half of the bracket for him to make the final.

Things going well so far this evening. Parelli lost his 11/6 match, but Grey and Dake are into the quarterfinals, and Manson won his match in the consis.

165: #9 Kerber wins 2-1 over Abdurakhmanov (Clarion) on a late penalty point for fleeing the mat. He'll face #8 Winston (Rutgers), who beat him at EIWA.

This was the worst call of the session. Kerber was down 1-0, Abdur...ov was getting close to a riding time point, when Kerber finally decided to do something (not one shot the whole match) late in the third period. It looked like he got the reversal, and then Abdur...ov escaped, which would have made the match 2-2. Instead, the ref gave Kerber just an escape. Abdurakhamov knew he had been reversed, and broke away from the bottom position, breaking contact with Kerber and stepped off the mat, which happens ALL THE TIME.

In general, I thought most Cornell wrestlers were not very aggressive. Most of the points were scored in counters, with Cornell wrestlers rarely taking shots. Lewnes didn't wake up until he was almost taken down. Grey had a tough opponent, but he could have worked harder and earned the major decision. Dake only got the points for the major in the last second, in a match that he should have won with a tech fall. Bosak was the only one who seemed really fired up.

One thing Cornell can't do is complain about the refs.

Looks/sounds like Cornell is performing roughly to expectations thus far. Is Penn State wrestling above expectations or is this about what the standings were expected to look like at this point?

Penn State is wrestling lights out. Very aggressive. They deserve to be ahead at this point. I expected it to be very close and still do.

Penn State is wrestling lights out. Very aggressive. They deserve to be ahead at this point. I expected it to be very close and still do.
Specifically, of the 7 wrestlers still in the top bracket, 5 were expected to be there and 2 were 9 seeds that beat the 8 seed. I fear that Penn State was underseeded at a couple of weights. I was hoping that Perrelli and Kerber were underseeded but, sadly, they haven't (yet) outperformed their seed. Fortunately, there's still time.

125 - I think Perelli can win 2-3 more matches. He has no seeded wrestlers down in his area of the wrestlebacks. This will help the team a lot if he can go on a run.
133 - Grey could pull a big upset and stay up top, but likely will fall down. Only needs one more win to get to All-American.
141 - Manson is likely eliminated in his first match tomorrow.
149 - Big match for Dake to beat #5 and make the semifinals. If he wins, he'd face unranked or #8 in the semis. Great shot at finals.
157 - Meagher needs to avenge a prior loss to Harvard's Peppelman to stay alive. This is a winnable match for him.
165 - Tough, tough loss for Kerber, now he needs to win 3 matches for all-American. Do-able, but he needs to be sharp.
174 - Lewnes looking good, should handle Bennett to make semifinals for a potential HUGE showdown with #2 Ruth from Penn State.
184 - Bozak faces unranked, should make semis.
197 - Simaz looking at #8, and then 4/5, to make the final.

Overall Friday prognosis - We really need to win in the quarterfinals at 149,174,184, and 197, and get runs in the wrestlebacks from 165 and 125 tomorrow. Also we should hope that Penn State only gets 4 or fewer into the semifinals.

Still think we have a great chance of winning. What will it take? Not sure, but my guess is 3 in finals with 1-2 winning, plus 6 all Americans total would do it, or at least put us close.

Bad start to the day:

125: Perrelli loses badly and is out of the competition. This was a weight class where we were expected to have an advantage over Penn State but ended up with the same result. Meanwhile, Iowa's 125 - the defending national champion - is tearing through the bracket.

133: Grey loses a MD to the #1 wrestler. Penn State WBF and is in the semis; Iowa is alive in the consis.

141: Manson loses 3-0 to the #7 wrestler and is out of the competition. Penn State lost and drops to consis; Iowa moves on to the semis.

149: Dake wins 3-0 (whew) and moves on to the semis. Penn State is in the other semi match; Iowa doesn't have a 149. Cornell and Penn State face "easier" matches than chalk in the semis. Dake vs. #8, Molinaro vs. #6.

157: Meagher loses 10-7 after taking a 7-3 lead in the third period. Crushing. Meagher is eliminated. Penn State beats Iowa in the QF.

165: Kerber wins 7-4 and advances. Iowa wins conolation match by TF. Penn State has nobody at 165. Kerber will next face the Iowa wrestler, #11 Jansen, in a critical match.

174: Lewnes wins 7-3 and advances to the semifinals. Cornell catches a break as Penn State's Ruth defaults out of his QF with an ankle injury. Iowa's 174 is done. Lewnes will next face #7 Amuchastegui (Stanford).

184: Bosak dominates his opponent, winning a 15-0 TF, and advances to the semifinals. #9 Wright (PSU) knocks off the #1 wrestler to move to the semis. #11 Gambril (Iowa) knocks off #4 to reach the semis. One of them will make the final, while #3 Bosak will face his nemesis, Lehigh's #2 Hamlin.

197: Simaz WBF in 2:20! Cam moves on to the semis. Iowa loses in the semis; PSU didn't qualify a 197. Simaz will face Kilgore (Kent) and have a chance to avenge his only loss of the season.

285: Cornell doesn't have a heavy. Penn State's heavy injury defaults in the QF; potentially out of the tournament. Iowa has nobody left at 285.

I probably should be tracking Oklahoma State too. But I'm not.

So much for 6 All-Americans, as we only have five alive at this point. I was counting on Kerber.

Grey will wrestle tonight in the 4th round of the wrestlebacks. He needs one win to get to the All-American round. The other 4 will go in the semifinals on ESPNU tonight at 7pm, and have secured top 6 already.

Team title chances starting to split away, as Perelli, Kerber, and Meagher all disappointed in the wrestlebacks. Meagher was leading after 2 periods, and lost, and the other two lost to lower seeds.

We still have a chance, but we would need multiple champions from our top 4.

Bosak with a huge opportunity for revenge...

Lehigh-Cornell Dual meet in January

"At 184 pounds, No. 3 Steve Bosak took down No. 9 Robert Hamlin a minute into the match. After 45 seconds, Hamlin escaped. Bosak started the second period down on the mat and escaped. Hamlin countered a shot by Bosak and took down the Big Red wrestler with 13 seconds left in the period. Hamlin chose neutral to start the third period. Hamlin took down Bosak to take a 5-3 lead. Bosak would escape but could not score against an evading Hamlin and lost a 5-4 decision."

EIWA Finals

"Sophomore Steve Bosak squared off against No. 4 Robert Hamlin at 184 pounds in the finals. Hamlin took down Bosak 18 seconds into the bout, but the Big Red wrestler immediately escaped. The two wrestlers continued high energy action throughout the period. In the second, Bosak escaped from his opening down position to tie the match 2-2. Bosak earned his first offensive points of the bout with a takedown, but Hamlin escaped. Hamlin quickly escaped from his opening down position to start the third period to tie the score once again at 4-4. The two wrestlers entertained the crowd once again trading shots back and force each countering their opponents shots. With time winding down, Hamlin took down Bosak. Bosak would immediately escape, but time ran out and Hamlin won a 6-5 decision."

All over for Cornell. No maybe next year, Penn State and Iowa will be much better next year. We will be much worse without Lewnes, Grey, Kerber, Meagher, and Mason.

Well, that was a depressing evening session. Dake and Grey were bright spots as Grey moves up the podium and Dake gets into the finals. The notion of three straight losses by Lewnes, Bosak and Simaz seems impossible. But it happened. And we're still wrestling tomorrow, so... here's the slate.

Tomorrow's matches:

Championship:
149: #4 Dake v #2 Molinaro (PSU)

Consolation Semis
133: #8 Grey v #3 Long (PSU) / #4 Graff (Wisc) v #11 Sentes (CMU)
174: #3 Lewnes v #4 Covington (Or. St.) / #2 Ruth (PSU) v #5 Hinrich (UVA)
184: #3 Bosak v #1 Honeycutt (Edinboro) / #5 LeBlanc (Wyo.) v #12 Gambrall (Iowa)
194: #1 Simaz v #12 Geisen (Stanford) / #3 Brandvold (Wisc.) v #5 Lofthouse (Iowa)

Other notables with team score implications:

#2 McDonough (Iowa) in the 125 Finals
#1 Oliver (Okl. St.) in the 133 Finals
#5 Marion (Iowa) in the 141 Consy Semis
#5 Parks (Okl. St.) in the 149 Consy Semis
#3 Taylor (PSU) in the 157 Finals
#6 St. John (Iowa) in the 157 Consy Semis
#9 Wright (PSU) in the 185 Finals
#2 Foster (Ok. St.) in the 197 Finals

Apparently Cornell is still mathematically in the running but it seems... unlikely.

Winners in bold.

Cornell went 3 for 4, including bonus points from Simaz (WBF) and Bosak (MD) and we are back in second place. With the two PSU wins, I'm pretty sure that PSU locked up the championship.

Mike Grey lost his 5th place match and finishes as an All-American in 6th Place. During the tournament, 8th seed Grey lost only to wrestlers ranked in the top 4. This was a hell of a tournament for him after an injury plagued year.
This is his second All-American honor (6th place in 2008, as a freshman) and an upbeat end to an excellent, if disappointing career. In both 2009 and 2010, Grey entered the tournament seeded and lost one match shy of All-American status. Still, it is only disappointing by the high standards he set for himself during the regular season.

Congratulations, Mike.

In other scoring news, Iowa's Marion and St. John both lost their 3d place matches, so Iowa hasn't been picking up points either. They still have one championship match, a third place match against Cornell and a fifth place match remaining.

I've stopped paying obsessive attention to Penn State because the race for first is over.

Cornell has two additional third place matches to come and Dake's championship match.

Mack Lewnes lost his 3d place match, 6-2 to #2 Ed Ruth (PSU). Lewnes finishes in 4th Place, the third All-American finish of his career.

A senior, this concludes an amazing - and yet oddly disappointing - career for Lewnes. As a sophomore, undefeated and ranked #1 in the country, he lost his only two NCAA matches (apparently due to a chest injury suffered in practice the week before the tournament). As a Junior, again undefeated and ranked #1 entering the tournament, he was dominated in the final and took second place. This year, he came in a little less touted - ranked #3 after losing 2 bouts - but saw an opportunity to return to the finals slip away when he lost to a lower ranked wrestler in the semifinals before losing to Ruth for the second time in the 3d place match.

That said, he ends his career with the most wins in Cornell history and three All-American honors: 4th in 2008, 2d in 2010 and 4th in 2011.

Congratulations, Mack.

This weekend is the opposite of last year due to our high expectations of wrestling and women's hockey. And no basketball.

Whats the point reward for winning in the championship match?

We're down by 14. Any chance that Cornell 1-0, and PSU 0-3 could result in us winning?

Winning the championship would net 4 points. Officially, first place is worth 16 but our score already factors in the 12 points Dake has received for finishing in, at worst, second.

However, with Iowa losing their only chance at an individual title - at 125 - Cornell locks up second place for the second year in a row.

All is amazing. Kyle Dake is the NCAA 149lb Champion.

#4 Dake absolutely dominated #2 Molinaro in the finals, taking an 8-1 decision. He had a quick takedown in the first period and rode Molinaro for over 2 minutes. In the second, Molinaro overruled his coaches and elected to start on bottom. Dake rode him for the entire second period and tilted him for an additional 3 points. In the third, Dake started on bottom, immediately got the reversal and AGAIN rode Molinaro for the entire period. In the end, Dake racked up 6:17 in riding time. The only point Molinaro scored was a penalty point, awarded in the first, because the ref thought Dake was putting illegal pressure on Molinaro's knee.

In 5 NCAA tournament matches, that penalty was the only point scored by an opponent. I think he's a long-shot but that isn't a bad resume for Most Outstanding Wrestler.

This is Dake's second national championship in two years. In 2010, Dake won the title at 141 pounds as a freshman. I can't believe that we get two more years of this guy. If wrestling were basketball he'd be in the WWE next week.

How can anyone but Anthony Robles be the Outstanding Wrestler? He dominated his 125 lbs match...and he only has one leg. I have never seen anything like it. This young man is an inspiration to anyone with a disability.

There were a lot of dominating performances. I think Burroughs is going to win it, actually. He destroyed people all tournament and even got a MD in the finals. If you want to see something nuts, check out the transcript of his QF win over the 8 seed - he got a TF by spending the whole match toying with his opponent, catch and release. At the end of the first period the score was 10-4: 5 TDs with escapes in between.

Robles' accomplishments are indeed impressive - though I confess that I often wonder whether his disability-in-life is actually an advantage on the mats. His resulting style is highly unorthodox and - as crude as this may sound - any weight that otherwise would have been in his leg, is in his upper body. I should be clear: the amount of work that he had to put into becoming a world-class athlete despite his handicap must have been staggering and he deserves all of the praise he gets. But he didn't dominate 125 the way Burroughs dominated 165.

I agree with all your points. Robles has the upper body of a 141 if not 149 pound wrestler. His biceps appeared to be twice the size of McDonough's. I'd have voted for Burroughs.

Did anyone else feel that Bosak managed to learn nothing from his previous two bouts with Hamlin? Hamlin consistently scored his points countering Bosak's shots. Bosak was able to ride Hamlin for an entire period. If he had just waited 20 more seconds in the first overtime, he could have won in OTs 2/3 by escaping and riding out Hamlin.
