Didn't want to start a new thread, but I saw in this week's USA Today/ESPN poll, that we number among the "Others Receiving Votes" with an awesome 2 points!

Well, the AP was not as generous with only one point. Leaving work now to head to the U-Mass game. Don't know what kind of crowd to expect but I'll report back later tonight.

Cornell needs to do a better job rebounding or it's going to be a tough night.

Am I hearing it wrong or is the UMASS announcer on the free stream calling Foote "Joe Foote"?

You are hearing it correctly. I also hope they talk about the Umass transfer a few more times.

Wittman's gotta start scoring before UMass improves on their 32% shooting from the field.

Outside shooting hasn't been great so far. Gotta improve in the second half if they want to keep this lead. Although UMass isn't shooting great either. Whoever gets it going in the second half will probably win this thing.

From the comments, I would have guessed that we were being blown out.

I think the comments reflect the fact that although we're winning, it's as much because of UMass's shooting problems as our play.

Neither team's shooting well from the floor. UMass is turning the ball over and Cornell's done a good job converting those into points. 24-10 rebounding edge to UMass at the half.

LGR...need to get hot from beyond the arc.

61-52 CU with 5:31 left ... Dale has 20, Wittman has only two, I believe.

74-61 CU win -- all with Wittman scoring four points on 1 of 8 shooting. Dale was huge in the second half with 17 points, 24 total.

Agreed. Incredibly heartening to know we can win even when Wittman has an off night. Watching the game on the video feed, we really had a very off night shooting. We could've run away with this game if we hit our open looks. I'm not sure what the final FG% is, but I can tell you we missed a TON of open looks from 3 and at least 7 or 8 from inside 10 ft. We'll need to tighten that up a little bit against a better opponent, but hey, great win and we're off to a hell of a start.

Yeah, I should have mentioned Reeves as well.

Ultimately, it's the depth of this team that sets it apart from most "better" Ivy teams of recent years. Plenty of guys who are getting little action (Groebe, Peck) would be 25-minute a game guys for the Cornell teams I followed in the early and mid-80's.

For all my fellow travelers on this Forum, let's try to appreciate what we have going on right now. Other than football :-/, we've never had such a collection of top-flight teams in the other "major" sports (hockey, hoops, wrestling and lacrosse) at one time. It would be great to see it last, but it's almost asking too much.

I for one am already appreciating what I expect to be a great winter into spring and have rearranged my schedule as much as possible to allow for travel to as many hockey and hoops games this winter to take it all in. I was at the game last night. Cornell played okay but U-Mass was awful and their youth showed through. I was glad to see Cornell working the ball down low - they may not have always finished the job but it shows they know they need to be physical and draw fouls rather than take outside shots. Foote seems to have greatly improved his game from last season IMHO. Ryan didn't seem to be much of a factor - that only goes so far - sure it means the rest of the team stepped up but everybody needs to step up in these non-conference games.

Just a scattering of Cornell fans at the game. Maybe 1,000 fans in total but I'm sure they inflated it for the box score. Some students but as was the case on our campus before our basektball rise these past few seasons, hockey seems to be a bigger draw. And the announcement at the end of the game that U-Mass had advanced to play Arkansas-Fort Smith in the next round - the whole setup of the Legends Classic is rather dumb - it is a showcase, not a tournament and why there is a D-III school in there I don't know. But when they lose to them, U-Mass will advance to Boardwalk Hall and the championships anyway. Maybe in a couple of years we can figure out how to lose hockey tournament games and advance to Boardwalk Hall for the championships.

Friday night will present an interesting viewing conflict with three of these "top-flight" teams in action in Ithaca--and on Redcast--at the same time: hockey in an important league game against Princeton, a 2009 NCAA tournament team; basketball, trying for three straight out-of-conference wins in their home opener against Seton Hall; and wrestling, now ranked #3, opening their season against #10 Maryland. The Terps have four top-ten wrestlers who will provide real tests for four of Cornell's top-ten-ranked guys, Mike Grey, freshman Kyle Dake, Mack Lewnes, and Cam Simaz.

I think I can get all three webcasts going simultaneously on my two displays, and will have to decide which audio to turn on at any given point in time. My wife will think I'm nuts...and will probably be correct.

No. He's just not facing a top-ten wrestler tomorrow night. Cornell has six ranked in the top ten: the four mentioned above, plus Nickerson and Kerber.

Yeah although the Cornell game could be a letdown game especially if Syracuse beats UNC

If you didn't watch the game, they looked great. (Well, even if you did watch.) Best I've seen SU this year. I don't expect them to do that well all year, but if their big men don't have to do a lot of freethrows, they are terrible, they could go along way. Don't be put off by their preseason loss to their crosstown Div. II school, Lemoyne. They played man to man, supposedly because the players wanted to, and of course they are known for their zone. I'd be looking forward to it, if not for the Colgate game. Too many things at the same time this year.

Seton Hall wins 89-79 over Cornell while Syracuse pwns North Carolina. I think it may get ugly in the Dome for our boys.
