Thought I would start this topic.

Living in Wichita with a son going to KU, I am really looking forward to the BIG RED visit to Lawrence, KS on Janaury 6, 2010, tipoff 7pm.

Thought it would be a good time to see if anyone else is attending and if someone has a suggestion of a meeting place in Lawrence before the game. Anyone have any suggestions?

I had seriously considered going, since I have a good friend who teaches at KU and he even went so far as to secure tickets to the game just in case. But between hockey at UNH (where I've also never yet seen a game), the relative expense of the trip, and my relative level of caring about basketball vs. hockey, it was really no contest.

I can ask my friend about good pregame locations, though.

Beeej knows I'm a Boston area guy (and I'm leaving for the b-ball game at UMass in about five minutes) but rouls, I've got a wicked travel schedule which takes me to Florida right after the ECAC basketball games at MSG 12/20 and 12/21. After catching Cornell hockey in Estero, I'm supposed to be back for hockey at UNH on 1/3. I've been to the Whit many times to see both the UNH men and women but clearly, never to see Cornell. The wrench is that my girlfriend is from eastern Nebraska with family all over eastern Nebraska and eastern Kansas and she'll be there till 1/3 after Christmas. I've thought about heading out to Nebraska after Cornell hockey is done in Estero and staying with her family (her sister works at Kansas and lives in Lawrence with her husband) through the Kansas game. Free lodging always helps the cause and I'm trying to stay away from my apt. as much as possible in December and January while construction takes place.

People may chime in on this thread but feel free to pm me if they don't to discuss ticket options and places to go around there. What Cornell clubs exist in that area that might be doing something? My going probably revolves around how the team appears to be doing in the next few weeks (not necessarily W-L record but how well they are playing very tough competition)

Yes, for the first time in about six years I have the time at work to have my winter schedule revolve around Cornell sports.

Beeeej's presence takes any Cornell sporting event up a notch so hope you can go even if I can't and all the best with your AZ ride.

That's nice of you to say, Tom, thanks. As it happens, I may not even make it out to AZ at this point; my 15 year-old diabetic cat had a hypoglycemic seizure last night and I may not be able to leave him for the next few days.

We lost our 19-year-old cat, who had been diabetic for nine years, just about a year ago. We went through many hypoglycemic episodes with him and they are not pretty. Hope you're able to keep him reasonably well -regulated. It's not easy when you can't prick his paw to draw a blood sample. We fed ours a Purina food (DM?) specially-formulated for diabetic cats...and he liked it.

So when you say "I'm a Boston area guy" that means that you moved from Long Island and started writing "wicked" and wearing Red Sox garb just several years ago, right? 'Cause that's what I know. ;-)

If by several, you mean 11, then yes. But my intention was to let the original poster, whose name I don't recognize, know that I was somebody from the east coast and not local to the Kansas area and thus, sort of in the same boat not knowing who might be there or what might be going on.

SoCo is somewhat cooperative when it comes to taking blood samples from his ear, and he loves prescription Hills MD, but it's still been tough to regulate him. Luckily he was stable by the time I had to head to Arizona on Thursday, and my roommate took care of him through the weekend.

For those of you not going to Lawrence, KS on Jan 6, all KU games are televised in Wichita, no matter who they play. But, I have also been informed there will be a video stream of the game. The link is:

So I hope you will see me there, I'm trying to get seats low enough. GO RED!

Cornell-Kansas also on espn360.com at 8pm EST on Wednesday. We'll see how Foote does with a 6'11", 245 pound opposing center.worry Jayhawks looked great dismantling Temple today in Philadelphia.

Disappointed that Wittman took an off-balance jumper (and the play appeared to be "Wittman shoots," so I'm not just putting it on him) rather than trying to get a better look. Still, a great showing by the Big Red.

typical cornell sports in big game (see the "worst game of the decade" thread), but have to just be happy with the statement they made. I don't think this effort will be overlooked by the tournament committee, if all goes well in league play.

You have to be kidding. That Cornell even had to concern itself with "blowing a lead" is a huge accomplishment. Kansas is a MUCH better team than Cornell is. Once Kansas' shots started falling and the defense locked down, seeing the lead disappear is the expected result.

This was an amazing game by Cornell, as disappointing as it is that they came so close. Thinking otherwise is delusional.

I doubt they'll get much credit for a close loss. The tournament committee doesn't pore over play-by-play of January games. They see RPI, key wins against Top 25, Top 50, and draw it up.

That was a tremendous effort by Cornell and anyone who criticizes the players for their performanc obviously never played a team sport. To stay with, never mind lead, the #1 team in the nation at home suggests that Cornell can play with anyone. Whether the tournament committee notices or not doesn't really signify. The guys know what they are capable of.

I'm not saying it's not a huge accomplishment; I was bouncing around the house that we were anywhere close at halftime, much less ahead. Kansas is a much better team than Cornell, and I'm very happy with their play today, but it would be nice to see us pull out one of these national-caliber games once a decade.

What makes the loss hurt is that we had the chance to put it away, but missed some wide-open threes and had some very bad officiating get in the way.

Being down by 5 the whole game would have been much easier to swallow.

A "wide open three" is not an uncontested layup. You're only supposed to make about half of them. I probably saw less of the end than you did but what I saw didn't have bad calls. I should stop typing. I'm overreacting to anything slightly negative and that is a bad sign about my state of mind.

So, did anyone watch the end of the GMAC Bowl? That was a hell of a finish.

That was so awesome. Cornell has been very pesky to some pretty important teams this year. Glad they finally seem to be able to hang with the big boys. Two or three years ago, the game would have seemingly been in reach at the half, with Kansas coming out of the locker room and blowing it open to bury the Big Red. Awesome showing by our boys in intimidating enemy territory.

Having said that, the end result leaves me deeply unsatisfied. I really, really, really, want to see a Cornell team win a Big Game. It's a shame they weren't able to close the deal tonight. It was not unlike watching Chris Berman work his game at a bar full of vegan women.

That's exactly my point. We missed a bunch of them. Between 17:00 and 7:00 of the second half, we missed 5 three point attempts in a row.

Like Davidson? Like St. John's? Fine, so we didn't beat Syracuse or Seton Hall, but hey, like it's been said further up in this thread, we've shown we can compete! And we come from the freaking Ivy League!

THIS GAME WAS AWESOME. I am very proud of our boys and, as always, extremely proud to be a Cornellian.

I am starting a "Keep Coach Donahue in Ithaca" fund. God knows, it's gonna be tough if he keeps pulling performance this good out of our team. Here's hoping he likes Ithaca so much that he's wants to stay there for a very, very long time.

Yeah. The bar I was in had that (and a pro bb game) on, so I was glued to the bottom line. As the night went on, they started flashing "UPSET ALERT" often with score updates from KU, and they even broke to an "In Game" highlight once or twice. I'm sure my friends were getting sick of me gesturing towards the screen.

it would be nice to see us pull out one of these national-caliber games once a decade.

I really, really, really, want to see a Cornell team win a Big Game.

Nah, dude, like a Frozen Four game against UHN, a Lax NCAA final against Syracuse, or a basketball game against the #1 ranked team in the country to snap a 54-game home win streak. That's what I mean by a Big Game. Trust me, I am freakin' thrilled that the Cornell basketball wins this season against "better" teams aren't flukey. I was very pleased to point out Cornell's win to a colleague of mine who is a Davidson alum when she was talking about how their basketball team is good this year.

But I mean, hey, even if Cornell didn't pull it off, they still made the game the lead story on Sportscenter by almost...ALMOST pulling it off. Not shabby at all.

In the Lax NCAA tournament last year (don't think anyone mentioned it, apologies if someone did), Cornell pulled out two upsets just to get to the finals, including a win over number 1 ranked UVA. Up to that point, Virginia had lost just two games all season, both to number 3 ranked Duke. And, not only did we beat them, it was a resounding win (15-6). Yes, we lost a heartbreaker in the finals, but UVA was favored to win that tournament until we defeated them. It wasn't the Biggest Game, but it was definitely a Formidably Sized Game that we won, and I would have put it over beating Syracuse in the final had we come out of the final with a win :`-(.

For the most part, people don't think of Ivy League teams as playing in big games, let alone coming close to winning them. Beating the spread on Kansas by over 15 points is a win for our team's national recognition, even though it won't show up in the W column.

Players don't say much of interest, but Self's comments are OK.

I know all of this. I still want a win in a Big Game. And I want an Oompa Loopma, Daddy, I want it NOW!

There were 10 of us here in Atlanta watching the game on a TV next to the door of the sports bar. Throughout the last three mintues of the game, several times guys that were about to leave the bar saw the score, made a "holy cow" comment, and decided to join us for the end of the game.

If the semi against UHN counts a big game, the semi against UAV certainly does. I think if we'd won that game in Buffalo and then lost to Minnesota in the finals, we'd be asking why we didn't win that big game.

Only if we lost it in as painful a fashion as the loss to UHN. Between the goal that got waved off and the miraculous facemask save on Bâby's shot, it was more painful than a straight-up loss would have been. It felt like it should have been a win. Not "we would usually beat this team" or even "we outplayed them but lost" but "how did we not win this game"?

On the other hand, the Syracuse game felt like "what did I do to make God hate me this much? Is it the atheism?"

Perhaps. But cheer up. It could be worse. She apparently hates people who pester Her even more than She hates atheists. Think Colt McCoy. thud

Didn't want to start another thread...

Was running through the dials and happened on the Kansas-Tennessee game today, just in time to hear about Kansas barely beating "a very good Cornell team."

Nice to hear.

Kansas lost that game to a depleted Tennessee squad.

IT COULD HAVE BEEN US! :`-(

We softened up the Jayhawks with body blows; Tennessee just delivered the knockout punch.
