For veteran eLynah denizens: I got an e-mail from Robert Shore, a law student at York University and grandson of Percy Shore, of the dynamic duo of referees, Percy Shore & Giles Threadgold (plus John Timmins). Robert says Percy last month was inducted in the Ontario Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. And, yes, Robert agreed, that's a phrase that does give pause initially, but at the banquet, "We were honouring not just my grandfather but a number of accomplished Jewish athletes from the Ottawa area. I was blown away by the caliber of the award recipients... A handful of kids on baseball/hockey scholarships to ivy league schools, an Olympian, and a Team Israel hockey player." Robert asked why eLynah old-timers dumped on Percy and Giles and my thought was, nobody dumped on the forgettable refs. Percy played in the 1930s, hung up his referee's skates in 1974, Robert was born in 1981, and Percy passed away in 2004; Robert would love to hear any stories about grandpa: robertshore(at)rogers.com.
Kind of nice to think about the community of hockey once in a while, as opposed to us vs. Clarksson vs. the refs day-to-day feuding and name-calling.
