Wow, I didn't see that coming; seemed like Metzbower had to be the odds-on favorite to succeed Tierney. Tough to disagree with his reasons for turning down the offer though.

De Luca interviewed yesterday, according to Inside Lacrosse.

Ben DeLuca would be a great fit for Princeton. If it happens, it would be a sad day for Cornell lacrosse; his impact on the program has been profound. But he deserves the opportunity. When he does get his first head coaching job -- and it will be soon -- whoever hires him will be getting someone very special.

They should hire him just to get a handle on our slide packages.

Tough to blame a guy for looking into a chance to move up in the ranks; it's not like Tambroni is so old (or being headhunted by other schools) that DeLuca could really be considered an "heir-apparent".

True, but I'm sure we would (selfishly) prefer he end up somewhere such as a Towson or Delaware, other than our main league rival.

Much as we don't like Princton, don't like Princeton's coaches, don't like Princeton beating us in the past ... if the Ivy League is a bunch of wimp teams plus Cornell, that's not so good for us long-term.

Interesting that De Luca was the "top choice."

Drexel's Chris Bates, one of the nicest people in all of college lacrosse, takes the helm at Princeton. Huge congratulations to him. I'm glad DeLuca's staying; I'm bummed that I have to root against Bates (at least against Cornell).

Inside Lacrosse
One thing with which to find fault: The Princeton-Cornell rivalry, simmering for years, nearly dissolved in enmity this year. There was a tangible edge when the teams met in a tense quarterfinal game won by the Big Red, 6-4. And it was extremely difficult to imagine DeLuca, a Cornell graduate, wearing Princeton colors anytime in the near future. Assuming Princeton pursued DeLuca so hard -- and that is the word among sources on both sides and among coaches -- it seems surprisingly naive.

How exactly does a rivalry between two teams in the same league "disolve in enmity??" Enmity doesn't disolve rivalries - it amplifies them. And we do have to play them, after all. Until we bolt for the ACC. (Lacrosse and hoops only, we'll stay Ivy for our secretary-rich football team.)

It does imply there was something beyond the normal course of a rivalry going on. Something personal that would last beyond a normal game into a job decision. Anyone have any idea what's being referred to?

I can't tell if they're saying the rivalry is getting hotter or colder since they seem to contradict themselves.

Presumably they meant "devolve into emnity"?
