I don't know if anyone else caught this, but earlier in the game they were talking about how Quinzani banned the other players on the team from bringing their books along on the trip to study. The announcers didn't seem to think this was a big deal, but I think that is terrible. So much for the whole student-athlete thing.

When does this start becoming bad sportsmanship?

When does this start becoming bad sportsmanship?
Are you taking about the (1) score or (2) the continued unnecessary penalties Duke keeps taking?
Answer: (1) now. stop shooting and put in the reserves. (2) now. stop taking cheap shots when SU guys don't have the ball.

Ben, you make a fair point on both.
I was specifically thinking of Syracuse continuing to shoot with a 10 goal lead and 4-5 minutes left. But the penalties by Duke aren't any better.

The thing is, the stall rule kind of encourages shooting in these games. The higher the score, the more likely for the refs to issue a stall warning. Once a stall warning is issued, a possession either ends with a shot or a turnover. You might as well take the shot.

ESPN2 has "Cornell defeated Virginia 14-10 in regular season on March 8" emblazoned across the bottom of the screen as they talk about Virginia's 14-10 regular season defeat of Cornell and what it means for today. Way to pay attention to detail, guys.

They might want to remove that "2 ET" text as well.

agreed ... this is a touchy subject. IMHO, it depends on the team that is losing. if they are aggressively playing the ball and/or taking stupid or unnecessary penalties (see Duke today) it leaves the winning team no real choice but to shoot running it up even more. in stark contrast, last week Hopkins had thrown in the towel with around 5-6 minutes to play and UVA was still taking them to the goal with their starters until ~3 minutes to go. so SU could have stopped shooting, no question but they did put in the reserves at a reasonable time in the 4th.

OK, now you be Tambroni. Do you shut it down at 13-6 with 10 minutes to go. No frickin' way. This is a game until it's over.

But no one could ever come back from a 7 goal deficit in a national semifinal!

Past the first round of the tournament there is no such thing as running up the score. It was unsporting for UVA to go up 18-0 on Villanova but who cares in they run it up on Hopkins? Hopkins is supposed to be prepared for the game as were Duke and Virginia today. Play from whistle to whistle and don't apologize.

And as it turned out, for Cornell that took the form of holding the ball with a 9-goal lead. Which was actually just continuing to play the game we'd played all day.

I have to disagree. UVA, for whatever purpose, kept in their first team till the end and kept scoring. First, give your reserves a chance to play in a playoff game, second sportsmanship should still be part of sports.ugarte

Now compare that to our game, reserves in for most of the third period and no need to score. We've talked the last point to death in prior posts already.
So, if you had a son on any of the above teams, winning or losing side, which would you want? I'm happy to say I went to CU.

The situations were a little different, though. We had an incentive to rest our starters for the championship game Monday, while UVa were looking at six days before their next game.

True, but why not rest UVA's starters, take away the injury possibility, and give the second class players some time. It can only help you down the road.jtwcornell91Jim Hyla
