Trinity College's baseball team nearly turned the first perfect championship season in NCAA baseball history...in any division. Entering the finals at 44-0, they got beat by Johns Hopkins in the 9th. Luckily for them, the D-III baseball tournament is double-elimination, so they got to face JHU again.

Hopkins was a borderline call on a 3-2 pitch from winning the championship, but it was called a ball. They walked in the tying and winning runs in the 9th of the deciding game. The final at-bat was 12 pitches. Must have been a pretty intense situation for those kids:

Blue Jays hurler Matt Wiegand worked the count full and delivered a pay-off pitch that appeared to graze the inside corner, an offering so close it had players spilling out of the Johns Hopkins dugout thinking they had just won the championship on a strikeout.

"He called it a ball," said a somber Blue Jays senior catcher Tony Margve, who scored on a sacrifice fly in the ninth to put his team ahead by a run.

Trinity finishes the season 45-1, and D3 National Champs. About the only thing the CT DOT can do right these days is update those highway signs that for some reason are important to boast about the local college championships...rather than give travel information.

This story spurred several comments in my head in rapid succession:

1) Makes you appreciate what the 1970 CU hockey team actually did.
2) Heh...another team in New England blows a chance at perfection...but at least this one closed the deal.
3) Rough weekend to be a Hopkins fan, eh? Thanks for beating Duke.
