Inside Lacrosse
With that decision now reversed, the Statesmen will have plenty of motivation Friday night against Cornell in the 128th meeting between the two Upstate New York rivals.

Wait. I thought they had tons of motivation before this reversal with it being their last game at Division 1. Why is the reversal reason for even more motivation?

I get it, either way, this is a big, big game for Hobart. But now, it's more of a celebration than a farewell.

Congrats to the Hobart Lax community. Very glad to have you staying.

Hard to imagine that happening. The stars and planets seem to be aligning for Hobart. They're playing the first-ever night game at their infamous traditional home venue, Boswell Field, after years of playing home games at their smaller and more sterile turf facility. Alumni, recruits, former players, families and friends are converging from around the nation for what will likely be the biggest home crowd in the program's history -- and now they'll be in a celebratory mood instead of a gloomy one. They're getting national media attention, and they know it. They're hungry for revenge after years of abuse. They're on a roll, having won three in a row and five of their last six. They just beat the first-place team in their conference. And on top of that, they're loaded with seniors -- and it's senior night.

The only thing that might work in Cornell's favor is emotional exhaustion. But that probably won't kick in until after the game -- or if Cornell gets a big early lead.

I forgot to add this to the long list of intangible factors favoring Hobart:

The Hobart players may have some extra juice because they think they're playing their last game under Coach Matt Kerwick, who is rumored to be on his way out after the season.

I guess that demonstrates that "emotional exhaustion" trumps all that other dreck.

Hobart's announcement, including a letter to the community from the chair of the Board of Trustees.

Or that tangibles usually trump intangibles.
