Sorry, just haven't been able to finish this on time -- just like last year. Princeton hockey event herding. Will post within 24 hours.

But just so no one says I cheated: Ryan Hurley will be fab.

Good call so far on Ryan Hurley. He assisted on the first goal against Navy and just scored number 2.

Got any more of those you want to mention?

Not anymore. Showing Navy up 5-4 at the half.

The half probably comes at a good time; we need to catch our breath and regain our composure.

More turnovers in the third; no Cornell shots in 6+ minutes; still 5-4 navy

Edit: 6-4 Navy after three; Cornell has nine shots on goal through three, one in the third; sixth Navy goal in final seconds off a Myers turnover

Another turnover and Seibald penalty leads to Navy goal; 7-4

Followed by a faceoff win and Glynn turnover

Espey makes it 7-5

Followed by a faceoff win and Glynn turnover

4:55 to go

Not in my eyes. Tough opener to play a Navy team with two games under its belt. Everyone got carried away with the Hopkins scrimmage results. Means little. Hopkins killed us in last year's scrimmage and we had a great year.

Good start for us and then just turnover after turnover. Tight, I'm guessing, since I can't see the game.

Edit: And our hotshots, Seibald and Glynn, have done nothing.

Hard not to have a drop-off when the outgoing won the outstanding goalie award. We'll see how Myers does. 7 goals, 10 saves today if the 8-7 score is correct. OK first game.

Finn unassisted 2:37 OT

What a day!

Very cold temperatures and metal stands full of ice made for more than a few painful toes. The seats were wet, too. No precip falling, though. Both teams looked very fired up coming out of the locker rooms. The CU white helmets look odd to me, since I'm so used to seeing the red helmets. The unis certainly don't look much different from a distance. Navy brought an impressive number of fans. The CU crowd was large, but generally not very organized or loud. I tried starting "Let's Go Red" a few times and nobody joined in.

CU looked fantastic out of the gates and built a 4-1 lead with a lot of hard work. It looked like we could create scoring chances at will. Swift passing, CU got inside early and often. The momentum quickly shifted as some sloppy turnovers benefited Navy, who rode a big run of momentum to the halftime lead. A couple of HUGE hits thrown by Navy on CU forwards right next to the cage set the tone. I thought the Navy goalkeeper made some outstanding saves, and Myers definitely held his own, too.

There was a terrific trail-check at midfield to force a turnover in the 1st that was so reminiscent of Seibald's vs. Albany. I want to say it was Max again, but I honestly didn't catch the player.

There was a big defensive breakdown in the 2nd when a long pass found a Navy forward all alone in front of the CU cage...the next nearest player was probably 10 yards out at least. A quick juke later and it was in.

The 2nd half was all about stifling play. There was some sloppy play by both teams, and Cornell rarely got set up in the 3rd without a careless turnover, but overall solid defenses. The heartbreaker came right at the end of the 3rd after a hard fought scrum in the crease led to Myers trapping the ball with about 0:10 remaining. He tried to rush his clearing pass...the Navy player in his face stuffed it, recovered and shoveled it in with 0:04 left in the 3rd to make it 6-4.

The punch-in-the-gut moment came after Seibald was whistled for a 0:30 penalty and Navy scored quickly on their man-up. That goal didn't look like it went in, but the refs ruled that it broke the plane of the goal mouth to count. Espey got one to go a few minutes later to break the 2nd-half goose-egg 7-5, but then Navy started working the clock...it didn't look good. Cornell managed to turn it on at the right time. Good defensive pressure (including some great play out of net for Myers) forced 2-3 key turnovers, even though Navy did an excellent job at evading CU's ride.

Espey, Seibald, and Finn seemed to be everywhere the final 2 minutes. Down 2 with under a minute to go, we got one in. My memory is hazy, but I think that Navy won the faceoff, and we managed to force a quick turnover and turn it upfield. With 0:22 seconds, CU called a timeout.

Big drama as everyone rose to their feet. Seibald had the ball at the top of the box on the restart, and within 2 steps, I knew what he was doing. Remember the OT hockey goal by Greening vs. Colgate where he skated through a hook to score? Yeah, I'd say this one was better. The Max Truck plowed up the left wing right for the goal, seemed to bend around at least 1 defender and snapped a shot at an angle that somehow found the net just inside the right post. 0:12 on the clock, as the CU sidelines erupted. Sheer will.

Glynn took the opening faceoff of OT (Seibald took a lot of them early in the game), and won it. Huge. A patient, deliberate passing sequence preceded an explosive jump-shot from Finn that bounced in for the winner. Great ending to a terrific lax game. Yes, there was some sloppy play on both sides, but considering that this game was played in weather about 70 degrees colder than Cornell's last game, it's a good start. Navy looked strong.

I felt that Glynn had a tough time getting free much of the game. Seibald is a real presence on the field, of course...he seems like a field general. Finn, Hurley...woo!! I was looking for Kyle Doctor, based on what I've read, but I didn't catch much of him. The program listed him as 160 lbs. I didn't see Rocco Romero on the field or sideline at all (at least not his number).

The game is up in 4 parts (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, and Overtime) on [www.sportsnetamerica.tv]. There's a graphic on the front page you can click on, but you still have to hunt in the results list.

Ithaca Journal said something about "groin."

[Edit: Also, Nick Gradinger, who would have been #2 D-man after Moyer, is said to have had knee surgery and will be out indefinitely. That, on top of the graduation of Mitch Belisle, really hurts.]

Watching the tape, you see lots of slips, lost balls, dropped balls, and turnovers by Cornell. Even by Max. But also by Navy. Makes you appreciate how much we lucked out, or skilled out.

Or you could say Navy choked.

Quirky as the video was, it was there, it loaded eventually, and it was free.

Let's hope Cornell doesn't move up too much in the rankings. Then everybody guns for Cornell even more.

Last year we went unbeaten and got seeded fourth. If we have one or two losses, I hope we get a bid this year.

Just watched the last two minutes of regulation with some care. Seibald not only scored the tying goal on a great individual effort, but knocked the ball out of a Navy player's stick with just over a minute remaining to set up Cornell's sixth goal. Moyer picked up the loose ball, passed it to Seibald who carried it into the offensive end, then passed it to Glynn who assisted Hurley on the goal with :52 left. Much like the turnover he caused in the Albany game that led to Glynn's OT game-winner. Didn't show in the box score, but was crucial to the win.

As far as I can tell, nothing has changed in the absurd criteria the committee must use for selection and seeding. I just asked Dave Rahme, who covers lacrosse for the Syracuse Post-Standard and who railed against the criteria last spring, and he's heard nothing either.bang
