Cornell sports full-time bubble

If Cornell is thinking of a wintertime bubble to cover the field, just as Harvard is doing, that begs the question: Why not a full-time bubble ... and while we're at it, why not put in a few seats, maybe 500, maybe 1,000, maybe 2,500, maybe 10,000. Each is only a little bit more. At same point you have to ask, does Cornell really need a 25,000 seat stadium any more? (Quick answer: sports no, NCAA regional events maybe (a lax qurterfinal once every 5 years?), graduations and concerts yes.)

Until recently -- well, the 1970s -- Comstock Hall was Lower Alumni Field, where lacrosse played in an intimate atmosphere with a couple thousand (?) seats. This would have been an incredible place for a small secondary stadium, as Princeton has with its wonderful Class of 1952 Field, which seats 2,500. It could have become a bubble field in winter and with a bit more money the bubble could have enclosed the stands, too. But Cornell with its silly belief that academics comes first -- imagine where that'd get you at Oklahoma or Florida -- took the field for educational purposes.

Maybe Cornell could grab what's left of (formerly Upper) Alumni Field. Or get it closer to campus. The Andrew Dickson White House and Big Red Barn seem well-suited (to me). It would probably be asking too much to bubble over one of the quadrangles.

I'm curious to see if the Schoellkopf bubble, if erected, is available in off hours for students to play on. Let's hope.

Terrain there isn't at all suited for this, either. It's insanity to believe they'll put some sort of athletic field in the middle of central campus.

Nah, it would never happen. But it would keep central campus professors on their toes, wondering what the hell the athletics department is up to next.

Seriously. Like students are allowed to play on Schoellkopf sans bubble in any season. Best bet...sneak on after an athletic contest.

Say, this reminds me...whatever happened to the space previously taken up by the tennis bubble by Kite Hill? Parking? Nothing? It would be a shame if they removed the tennis bubble and a useful, accesible facility for no real reason.

I'm assuming (hoping) he was kidding, but let's not give the Tru$tees any ideas. A 44-year old man would look pretty stupid chained to a building to prevent a demolition.

Thank you, even if I wasn't intending a Seinfeld-esque post. BTW, one assumes you mean " ... so far." We have miles to go.
