Does building a concrete canoe qualify under Other Sports? [www.news.cornell.edu] Back in the early 70's a team that had done fairly well with their canoe in this or some similar competition decided to race it in the annual Fall Creek White Water Derby (Freeville to Varna). While the draft was fine for the river where the contest had been held, it was too deep for Fall Creek. Scraping the rocky bottom knocked off chunks of the concrete. It soon sank in a fairly inconvenient location and had to be hauled out.

No. :)

(and this is coming from a guy who used to canoe race competitively)

You don't see EEs competing to build devices with vacuum tubes or computer scientists competing with 1s and 0s. Find something useful to do with the technology - a la the HEV, smart house, or solar vehicle competitions!
