A meta-question about the forum redesign: what's the point of avatars? Just seems like a waste of bandwidth and effort to me. I don't really care much one way or the other, especially since Age is restricting them to small files and lets you turn them off altogether. But I'm just curious what people here think (and I even had the sense to ask this in JSID and not in the new features thread!)

I don't really care one way or another. I agree with restricting the size, but I was mildly annoyed he picked 80x80, only because I've been on LiveJournal for four years, where it's 100x100. But when it comes down to it, I didn't care nearly enough to wait until I'm home and in front of GraphicConverter where I can reduce one of my usual avatars from 100x100 to 80x80, and I just picked a random 80x80 avatar off the net that amused me a little.
People can use 'em or not, view 'em or not, it doesn't matter much to me.

I think they're fun, as long as I can use them to push my political philosophy on KeithK, Robb, and other GOPers on the forum

Do you find that you win many converts with that message?

This is the only forum that I can think of that uses avatars justified against the right side, and floating in a gradient of red to grey. Seems like they are literally hanging around in my posts.
Of course, that's if I get around to picking one.

It seems like a visual reinforcement of the poster's identity would help your brain process a split-second quicker whose post you're reading.

I like your avatar. But there was no need to convince me to change political positions involved.

Nope. But it isn't stopping them from sending me solicitations for money disguised as a poll.
