Cornell under scrutiny of DOE for potential Title IV violations

From today’s D&C:

“Ithaca’s Cornell University is among a group of seven schools which the federal Department of Education announced Nov. 16 it has been investigating 'for discrimination involving shared ancestry' under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act, according to a statement.

The renowned college is being investigated alongside fellow Ivy League schools, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania, among four others including Lafayete and Wellesly Colleges.

Should the schools be found violating Title VI, which forbids discriminations based on ethnic characteristics, national origin, or shared ancestry, they could be at risk of losing access to federal funding, which represented $756,118 of Cornell’s 2022 budget.“

From the NYT, 11/17:

“The federal government opened discrimination investigations this week into half a dozen universities, including Columbia, Cooper Union and Cornell in New York, following complaints about antisemitic and anti-Muslim harassment after the Israel-Hamas war broke out.

Since the start of the war on Oct. 7, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights has also opened inquiries into Wellesley College in Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania and Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, along with a K-12 school district, Maize Unified in Kansas . . .

The office is investigating possible violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects students in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance from discrimination on the basis of race, color and national origin. The federal agency did not share any details about what incidents led to the investigations, except to say that they stem from five complaints of antisemitic harassment and two of anti-Muslim harassment.”

To Martha Pollack, I say “It’s all your fault!, It’s all your fault!” After all, she was president when former engineering student and mentally ill Patrick Dai was admitted.

Exhilarating to be included along with the Maize Unified SD in Kansas.

Everything's poor Martha's fault: snow, ice, headaches, tough prelims, every sports loss. After all, she wasn't popular at Michigan and someone thought she was a bit different as an undergraduate. Stands to reason.

You’re absolutely right! “a bit different as an undergraduate.” Are you implying that she didn’t get shitfaced drunk at Dartmouth?

And surprisingly, Michigan’s football program is only now coming under scrutiny, when obviously the problems began when she was provost there!

Accusing Cornell of being anti-Semitic seems like accusing Notre Dame of being anti-Irish but ok.

In rereading the D&C article, I noticed that they left three zeros off the amount of Cornell’s federal funding. Our research budget is north of one billion, with most coming from the feds. Also, they misspelled Lafayette and Wellesley.

If anyplace a Jew should feel safe-ish on campus, it ought to be at Cornell. Against this, there is the history of humankind. November 2023, BTW, is the 100th anniversary of the Beer Hall Putsch that got Hitler and the Nazis rolling.

Three Ivies – Brown, Columbia and Cornell – are in the 20%-25% range for Jewish students, per Inside Higher Ed: Jewish Student Enrollment Is Down at Many Ivies. That's about 10X the overall US Jewish population of 2.5%. But only Brown and Cornell's numbers (percentages) have not gone down since the Vietnam era. Columbia is way down. Now (and Inside Higher warns these are estimates, not headcounts:
College Percent Jewish 2020s
Brown 23.9%
Cornell 21.5%
Penn 16.~%
Yale 12.2%
Harvard 9.9%
Princeton 9.6%
Dartmouth 8.8%
Given that one if the eight Ivy schools has one quarter of the population, Cornell has the most Jewish students, about 3,000 undergrad (also 500 grad), per hillel.org.

Sara Weissman, Inside Higher Ed
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, a Jewish news wire service, reported in 1967 that Jewish students had reached high numbers at the Ivies after decades of low enrollments. The news outlet cited a New York Times survey at the time, which found that the student bodies at Columbia University and University of Pennsylvania were 40 percent Jewish. Jewish student populations at Harvard, Yale and Cornell were estimated to be between 20 and 25 percent, while those at Dartmouth, Princeton and Brown hovered between 13 and 20 percent.

Jews now make up 9.9 percent of Harvard’s undergraduate enrollment and 12.2 percent at Yale, according to estimates on Hillel’s website. The share of Jewish students at Columbia University is an estimated 22.3 percent. Roughly 8.8 percent of Dartmouth students, and 9.6 percent of Princeton students, are Jewish. Cornell and Brown are the only two Ivies to buck the trend of significant declines compared to the 1960s, with Jewish students making up 21.5 percent and 23.9 percent, respectively, of the enrollment

This is fun.

A 2019 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that 75% of white students who were recruited to Harvard as ALDCs "would have been rejected" if they had been treated as white students without those connections.

99% of the non-ALDCS students couldn't get the puck over the blue line against the Columbia club team.

I interviewed the Williams College director of admissions on diversity in the college student body, a while back. He said, ~ "If we accepted only the top student at each good high school, we wouldn't have a very good football team, but we'd have an outstanding orchestra and marching band."

The point of Harvard admitting American League Divisional Championship Series students is they can do the work, and they have other attributes. Teamwork is a valuable attribute in a lot of business settings. Anyone from Cornell football who applies to work checks the box, [] Can deal with adversity.
