Johnny's Big Red Grill sign in Collegetown is no longer "still there." :`-(

Burn. I was a Royal Palm guy but I really liked that sign.

Awful. That was something I hoped would stay forever. :-(

Did it go the way of the hydraulic lab, or was it taken down because it might someday?

Do they still have the jukebox with the vinyl 45's at Dunbar's? And Pep?

Thread drift.

And I'd be shocked if he wasn't in Albany this weekend, too.

Pep and the jukebox (with pretty much the same selection) are still there. And he will be in Albany.

You can thank the City of Ithaca Fire Marshal for the removal of the sign.

The old neon sign was landmarked and thought to be safe from removal. The rooster sign above the Chanticleer bar downtown is another landmarked local neon sign.

And it is not disposed of, just in a safe resting place for now.
The sign is not in great shape, and it is doubtful that it will be returned to it's former location.

Just so long as the jukebox isn't. I don't give a flying @#$% about your shaker of salt.

Fix it to make it safe and hang it in the Game Room at WSH.dribble

And also--I believe--the popcorn machine whose oil has not been changed since 1979. (Although the last time I was there it was off.)

No, the grease has gotten so thick that it now just completely blocks the light and thermally isolates it.

I never ate that popcorn once in the, oh say 500 times I was in Dunbars. Common sense prevailed. I did hear Brown Eyed Girl (ended up marrying one) and Magic Carpet Ride a few times as I recall.

I used to eat the popcorn at Dunbars all the time. It was fine. I only threw up once that I remember, and I think that had more to do with the pitchers than the popcorn.

Otherwise, I think it's time for another Collegetown Riot. Oh, for the days of eating in Chef Italia and watching the clouds of tear gas go wafting by in the night.

They're building some sort of weird balcony thing where the sign used to be. I don't quite get it...

The sign is rumored to be eventually sold on eBay, per the last sentence of this CAM story:

It's true. Will be (or maybe already has been, I'm not sure) sold on eBay.

The Cornell Sun reports that the Johnny's sign has been sold on e-bay to an alumna who bought it as a birthday present for her alumnus husband. There's a long discussion of where it could be stored, the cost of restoration, and potential final display locations.

I hope they can get it up in C-town somewhere, and get the neon lights restored.

Now all we need are even more generous alums who want to reopen Johnny's.
