the more the ECAC still starts out on the same bad foot...

After the first big night of games and Colgate's 2 OT loss, the ECAC begins with a 1-3-1 OOC record (including Vt's tie last week). The sole win coming from RPI over Wisconsin, earning the right for a non-Cornell all red showdown tomorrow in Wisconsin (RPI / BU). SLU, Union, and Colgate get the losses, and Vt's tie against NU.

On the "bright side", UConn lost 10-1 to NU, so the ECAC is still seems head and shoulders above the MAAC.

Is Colgate's 2ot loss a "tie" for official purposes, or is that only for shut outs?

The eLynah FAQ provides the following answer to Greg's question:

----
No.

In tournaments where there must be a game winner, the organizers can choose to play full overtimes until there is a winner or have a shootout after 5 minutes of overtime.

If full 20 minute overtime periods are played, the winning team gets the win and the losing team gets the loss, regardless of how long it takes.

If the game ends with a shootout after 5 minutes of overtime cannot decide a winner, it is counted as a tie for both teams, regardless of what happens in the shootout.

Although it probably will be a win and a loss, the tourney certainly tried to mess things up by playing a 5 min. OT first. See USCHO story [www.uscollegehockey.com] .

Yeah, I was just about to comment on that. The consensus on the USCHO board last night was that it would be a win and a tie, but the 5 minute OT first made it seem like they were doing it to make an official tie. After reading that USCHO sidebar, it seems like they messed up. Either way, it appears it'll still be recorded as a win/loss, as the standings already reflect.

I hate shootouts, but in my opinion, they shoulda done one here. First for this reason, and secondly because both teams will now be very tired for their Championship/Consolation games.

2-5-2 OOC after tonight

RPI and Vt loose, Union ties, and SLU pulls out the lone win.

Colgate loses also, a respectable 2-1 to Mich. St.
