Minnesota leads Union 2-0 at the end of the first period (Two early PP goals)...the quote that summarizes the first period, "The zamboni won't need to cross the red line at intermission" -Doug Woog

5-0 Minnesota after two (One more PP and two even strength goals)...Caffaro gone with a game misconduct for trying to instigate fights (and a charging the goaltender major penalty earlier in the period).

Finished 8-0 Gophers...kind of wonder what the score would have if Minnesota had Wheeler and Kessel. Union plays Cansius tomorrow in the consolation.

Big win for sucks, and it's nice to see Union back to form - good thing they decided to show up in Ithaca
But seriously sometimes we complain about lopsided officiating 2 PP's for Union comapred to 11 for the Goophers (5 of which they scored on) nut

Honestly, it could have/should have been a lot more lopsided (Union was doing obvious, stupid things late in the game that the refs, try as they might, could not ignore). Quite frankly, Union played really poorly and did not adjust to the way the refs were calling the game (CCHA refs strike again?), of course they also took out their frustrations in stupid penalties (see earlier comment on Caffaro). The idea that penalties should be "balanced" is ridiculous, especially in a game such as this (this idea was talked about recently by the NHL director of officiating as well).

Harvard beat NoDak!

Except the Union loss to Minnesota might suck for us, common opponentwise.

There's still hope. Minnesota has a pair of home games coming up with (CHA) power Niagara. It'll take a NIagara win to have a chance at wrestle back the COP w/Minnesota. help

But the idea that a tourny could have some balance with regard to the four teams is legitimate. It's too bad that Minnestota's 3 visitors are all having such poor years.

I agree completely, a lack of planning on Don Lucia's part

Not a tournament game, but #14 UNH is getting humiliated by Niagara. It's 6-2 in the third at the Whit.

Union beat Cansius in a snoozefest earlier today 2-0 (one was an empty netter), and the Gophers just won the Mariucci Holiday Classic for the 7th year in a row by beating UMass-Lowell 5-4 (Lowell capitalized on almost every scoring chance, but its hard to win when you get outshot by at least 25). On a side note, Princeton is going to Minneapolis this time next year (Yale follows with BC in 2007).

This year? Sounds a bit modest.

I watched a good portion of the game. The result was not a fluke. Princeton more than held their own throughout the game, got solid goaltending from Leroux and capitalized on their opportunities.

Not that much of an upset. The unofficial RPI and PWR standings put Denver at 26th in RPI (top 29 are TUC). So it was a case of a non-TUC beating a barely-TUC; an upset yes, but mild.

Speaking of which...near term rooting interests as far as PWR and the NCAA tournament:

- UMD is 28th in RPI. Having failed to take care of business against them, this is really hurting us in TUC and COP. Root against UMD (to drop them from TUC)except for their later season games against UND and MN (for COP purposes).

- Niagara is currently a precarious 27th in RPI. Root for them the rest of the way, particularly their next two against MN, which is probably the last chance we have to swing that individual comparison to Cornell. A Niagara split would do it, pending MN's season finale against UMD.

- Nebraska-Omaha is currently beating Cornell based on COP. A Yale win tonight would go a long way to fixing that (along with Cornell beating Yale again on 1/28 and Mich State helping out in their weekend at UNO on 1/20,21)

Right. I didn't see much of the game but Princeton stayed right with Denver during the segments I watched. They looked good, too, in periods two and three of their win over QU, when they scored six straight to come back from being a couple of goals down.

Denver may not be a top 10 or 15 or maybe not even 20 team this year, but it was still quite an upset. Even after the game, DU's KRACH was 167 and Princeton's is 51 (this may be back from before the game: source: RPIhockey.net). That gives Denver a better than 75% chance at the win based on previous results this season. Not a miracle on ice, but not mild either.

And Denver taking 4th in the Denver cup is just beautiful ;)

Come late March this may be 33 seconds that sends Cornell out west, or even a ticket to the dance itself.

If Cornell deserves a dance to the ticket, we'll get one.

And I have no concerns about going West after the team's performance last year out West. We were dominating the #1 seed in their own barn for the final 15 minutes of a game which would have sent us to the Frozen Four. East, west, north, south, you have to win the games.

Let's just take care of our own business in the 2nd half.
