Mike Knoepfli has apparently played in all 25 games in his first pro season with Geneve-Servette in the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation, with 2 goals, 3 assists, and 4PIM to date:

He also got a mention in the Servette preview on the website of "my" club, SCBern, which referred to him as "practically a foreigner" (Swiss clubs are limited in the number of non-Swiss players they can have, but dual citizens like Mike (and Andre Doll '96, who played in Lugano in the 1990s) don't count as foreigners.):

Can I just say again how glad I am he didn't end up in Fribourg?

Yes, there's a lot of advertising on European sports uniforms. At least the hockey sweaters still feature the club logo more prominently than the sponsor logos, which doesn't seem to be the case for English soccer jerseys.

On the positive side, there are no TV timeouts.

Sharks are up 5-0.

Can't really verify "same time," but in '96-'97 four Cornellians played in at least one NHL game: Drouin, Duffus, Manderville, and Nieuwendyk.

The '92-'93 season had five: D'Alessio, Hayward, Manderville, Nieuwendyk, and Ratushny.

'86-'87 and '87-'88 had four: Dadswell, Eliot, Hayward, Nieuwendyk.

Those four were up for more than a cup of coffee, which wasn't the case for Drouin, Duffus, D'Alessio, Ratushny, Ryan Hughes, JM Pelletier, and Underhill (all played in 3 games or fewer).

From [www.omahaaksarbenknights.com]

"By the day of the first game, they had become known as the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights in honor of the benevolent society who helped bring the team to town."

And that society, from [www.aksarben.org]

"The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation is a 501(c) 3 civic and philanthropic organization with a mission of building a more prosperous Heartland, where communities can flourish and every child can succeed. Formed in 1895. "

Ahhh...it only took watching Murray's first shift to bring back the fond memories. Murray had the puck behind his own net...passed out to a teammate as a forechecker bore down on him to attempt to finish a check.

Murray promptly leveled him...the Thrasher sort of bounced off him like a pinball.

+1 at the end of the night in a 5-3 win for the Sharks. Murray's ice time has gone up in each of his three games (he again got more ice time than two other defensemen), and he's seeing significant time killing penalties. Seems like he's being given a chance to stick, which is great.

BIG HITS
Besides Thornton, Doug Murray also played his first game at HP Pavilion, and the rookie is undefeated as an NHLer as the Sharks have gone 3-0.

“I definitely got in there and played my role,” said Murray. “I got a couple of good chances to hit a few guys tonight. I was a little overanxious in the beginning, running around a little too much, but I settled down and played solid defensively as well.”

Murray laid a big hit on Ilya Kovalchuk in the first period and later one on Ronald Petrovicky that left the Atlanta forward down on the ice for a few minutes.

“I know what’s coming,” said Murray. “He (Kovalchuk) is their top gunner. He’s obviously one of the targets out there, and I will try to hit anyone out there. But especially a guy like that. If you get a chance, you want to take it.”

Murray is definitely enjoying his brief, yet promising, NHL career.

“It’s big,” said Murray. “Hopefully, we can rattle off seven more, and we’ll forget about those 10 losses we had.”
:-D

Has anyone seen this video from the mid-'80s Calgary Flames? It's like an awful hockey version of the Super Bowl Shuffle. If Nieuwendyk makes an appearance, I missed it (probably because I was laughing too hard), but Brett Hull's in there, and I know they were with the Flames at the same time.

Joe played nine regular season and six playoff games for the Flames in '86-'87 after Cornell's season ended. '87-'88 was his first full season in Calgary.

Joe couldn't be more different than Doug as a player. Last night at the end of the Stars game (they lost 4-3, Dallas scored with about 15 secs left), Gary Roberts went flying into the offensive zone with about 5 seconds and just about checked a Stars player through the boards (looked like at was from behind) right at the end of game buzzer. A fracas of course ensues and Joe kind of stands there looking like he wants none of it - in fact it looked like he was trying to just get off the ice and leave his team. But he's still no ordinary Joe.....and he's tough when it counts. Good luck to both alumni (I'm assuming Doug takes that pesky final hotel class!!).

Too many teams have zero quality goaltenders for Phoenix to hold on to three, especially considering the holes the Coyotes have elsewhere in their lineup.

Good point. I had been thinking that at least if Lenny goes back to the AHL for a while he will get a lot more playing time than he will behind Cujo, possibly honing his skills faster. I hadn't thought of trading Boucher, however.

Coyotes G Brian Boucher, out with a pulled groin since Phoenix's first preseason game, was recalled from San Antonio of the AHL after a two-week conditioning stint. Boucher, who set an NHL record with five consecutive shutouts in 2003-04, was 2-2 with a 1.18 goals-against average for the Rampage. David LeNeveu, 2-5-2 with a 3.20 GAA in nine games, was sent to San Antonio to make room for Boucher.

Mention of Murray: [www.freep.com]

[Q] Should it be Murray-strom?
"Murray" is a ubiquitous hockey name -- you have your Bryan Murrays, your Rem Murrays, even your Murray Armstrongs, to name just a few.
But San Jose defenseman Doug Murray is a little different -- how did a guy from Sweden end up with a name like that? He said his Scottish ancestors relocated to Sweden centuries ago.
"It's been three or four hundred years," Murray told the San Jose Mercury News. "If it makes anything better, my mom's maiden name is Bjorn." [/Q]

Shoot, the Daily Sun was three years ahead of them on that story.

From 10/30/02:
[q]"In the 1600s the first Murray came to Sweden, or at least the Murrays that I'm a part of, so I've been Swedish for 400 years." Murray explained. "My middle name is Lars, so that's pretty Swedish, and my mom's maiden name is Bjørn, so there's some Swedish names in there. Everybody's wondering about that. Nobody believes me when I say, 'Hi, I'm Doug Murray.'"[/q]

Bâby had the assist on his team's only goal of the night Friday
[www.chicagowolves.com]
[q]Right wing Billy Tibbetts answered for the Wolves (9-10-1-3), 1-1, with an early second-period power-play goal. Chicago native Stephen Bâby pushed a shot toward the crease that bounced off a Stars defender and fluttered into the air before Tibbetts whacked the puck past goaltender Dan Ellis at 4:55 of the second frame. Tibbetts has notched three goals and four points in three games with the Wolves after signing on Dec. 7.[/q]
He seems to be getting more ice time, playing in 17 of 25 games so far. He has 2 goals and 4 assists. +5. 20 PIM.

Lenny is playing pretty well since being sent down to San Antonio. In two games so far, he is 1-1, allowing 3 goals, with a GAA of 1.52 and a SV% of 0.942.

Vesce and Iggulden are both making strong showings in the AHL so far this year. Vesce is tied for first in rookie scoring with 30 points on 8 goals and 22 assists through 29 games.

Iggulden is 8th with 11 goals and 12 assists through 31 games.

Not too shabby!

Hynes has played 12 games with Portland Pirates (AHL) and has 1G-3A-4PTS

He has got scratched for quite a few games recently mainly because Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry are back with Portland after stints in Anahiem. I think it was a bad career choice for Hynes to sign with Anahiem, he should have foreseen that he wasn't going to get playing time - this is definitely going to stagnate his development.

I don't see him getting into the lineup anytime soon barring any injuries to Pirates very deep forward lineup: Dustin Penner, Getzlaf, Perry, Ryan Shannon, Tim Brent, Igor Pohanka, Curtis Glencross, Aaron Gavey, Geoff Peters, Simon Ferguson.

Hynes is out with a knee injury not due to a logjam at the position.

"Shane Hynes (Knee) is back in Anaheim receiving treatment for a knee injury that is more severe then originally thought to be at the time. He isn’t expected back until February or March."

Sharks-Ducks tied at 3 after two. No hits or points for Dougie, but he was on the ice both times the Sharks were playing two-men down.

Grant Stevenson, of 2003 Mankato fame, has two of the Sharks goals.

Doug is apparently impressing the coaches. I just notice that his ice time keeps going up. He didn't get any shots or hits in last night's game, but he was 3rd in ice time, which looks to me like he's playing in the 2nd defensive pairing. He also had 6 minutes of PK time, so they're looking to him as one of the primary penalty killers. Lookin' good!

Doug picks up a five-minute fighting penalty for getting into it with the Coyotes' Doan after leveling Nagy with a big check. Dumped Doan right on his butt.

Great hit, and Melrose's "Hit of the Night" on Sportscenter. Yeah Dougie.

Solid night for Leneveu last night, he stopped 28 of 30 shots he faced in regulation and OT, and stoned all 5 shooters he faced in the shootout, helping San Antonio get a 3-2 win over Omaha. Leneveu was named 1st star of the game.

Since getting sent back down to the AHL, Lenny is 2-1 with a 1.63 GAA and a .939 SV%

How about the fight? Did he win? The only evidence that I have seen so far is from the NHL photo wire on espn that shows Murray on top of Doan (I think) and Murray's helmet was knocked off.

The SportsCenter clip showed Doan skated over to Dougie who immediately pushed him on his back. Doan threw a punch while on his back that hit Dougie but he was sitting on top of him and about to pound him. The refs skated in and held him back since Doan was in a very vulnerable position.

By the way, Melrose's quote when showing the best hit of the night was too funny: "Vladislov Nagy comes across, he dipsy doodles, he thinks everything is fine. Big Dougie Murray comes across and lays the Rudy Poo (sp?) on him. What a hit! Clean hit, no penalty. Nagy's head is down and nearly taken off!"

That was priceless. Go Dougie!!

In the traditional defense of his team's "honor," Captain Doan skated over to Murray after the hit looking to do battle. Doug dropped his gloves, removed his helmet, and immediately dumped Doan on his ass. As Doan started to swing up at Doug the scrap was broken up by the linesmen.

Troy Nickerson once won an all-star match against his high school opponent from Indiana with a pin in five seconds. Doug came close to matching that last night.

That was awesome. The hit was solid and clean. And I love how he just took off his gloves and helmets, ready for the fight, not backing away. And the drop, well that was just beautiful. Damn I got to get to a Sharks game when I get back out there.

The Sharks game is on comcast currently. The Sharks radio announcers love Doug Murray, he is all they have talked about in the last 20 minutes. Apparently Weight tried to check Murray, Murray did is typical laugh after Weight fell to the ice.

Naturally, each team has its own take on the encounter:

SanJose:
"Murray laid out Ladislav Nagy along the boards, causing Shane Doan to shove Murray, resulting in a brief scrap. Murray dropped the gloves and unstrapped his helmet as Doan charged him, but the big defenseman sent him immediately to the ice."

Phoenix:
"Ladislav Nagy was deliberately elbowed in the head by San Jose defenseman Doug Murray. After a brief stare down with Coyotes captain Shane Doan, Murray found himself being tackled to the ice and taking a couple right hands to the face before the two were separated."

I'm all for supporting Dougie, but his hit did look a lot like an elbow and I'd swear Doan landed a helluva punch while on his back.

The Comcast webcast used the Phoenix TV feed and the Coyotes' announcers said it was clearly a clean hit. Your elbow is rather rigidly attached to your shoulder and, when you raise the latter, the former has to go along for the ride. The contact was clearly with Doug's shoulder, not elbow.

It's a clean hit, I'll admit. Watching and focusing on the off-ice replay in slow motion can be a bit deceiving, so no, I don't agree with how 'clear' it was.

Thanks for that crucial anatomy lesson all the same.

Let the clip keep playing; they show very good, solid replays of the initial hit and the fight.

If the entire clip is that choppy, shut down other applications before watching it.
