you can’t help but agree the 2005-2006 hockey season is indeed upon us

I hope we can expect more daring, out-there-on-the-edge statements like this from Smyth's blog. That's what exciting sports blogging is all about.

Well, I think it's cool that he's doing it. Someone in Colgate Athletics probably asked him to do the blog, and it's a little extra work for him to provide something a little extra for their fans. I remember my senior year when Cornell captain Brad Chartrand had a weekly "column" in the Sun, "Bullets over Bradway." The content was essentially the '90s equivalent of a blog.

[Q] [ECAC play is] A big step up from non-conference play, we find ourselves preparing for a tougher, faster, and more intense set of games this week. [/Q]

That's funny. Cause for Cornell it's gonna be a step down.

My new sign idea for the Colgate game: "Worst Blog Ever". I'm not sure how many Cornell fans will get it, outside of those of us who post here.

Lol. I think most people dedicated enough to go to away games probably post here, or at least read here.

And, more importantly, the Colgate fans and Colgate players will get it. =)

It's one post. If he continues it and actually provides some commentary on the team and college hockey that isn't inane and vapid it will be an interesting venture. But only time will tell. I'd be very surprised if he ever posts anything that's remotely bulletin board material, but it could be worthwhile.

That said, "Your blog sucks" is totally appropriate regardless. :-D

That's too broad a question at a point in the season when they don't play us for months. I doubt you'll get a response.

He's probably a perfectly nice guy outside the confines of a hockey rink; I don't see any real reason to rip on him online for posting his thoughts, pithy though they may be. (Which isn't to say not to make fun of him during the games, but outside... eh.)

Oh no! That was a serious question. I wasn't being sarcastic. I sincerely want to hear his opinion on Cornell. Obviously he's going to say Cornell is a good team, but I am interested to see how he will approach that question. Is he the conceited type? Or a humble guy? Will he mention how much he hates Cornell fans? We will find out.

Heh, don't worry Oat, I didn't mean you in particular, but it seems not entirely outside the realm of possibility that someone might use this as an opportunity to trash-talk online or something along those lines.

I realize that we're not scheduled to play UHN anytime soon, but this looks like it could be a regular column for the Portsmouth Herald, and it looks like it's a lot more likely to yield interesting taunting fodder.

"TWO MINUTES IN THE BOX": a one-(run-on)-paragraph story by Josh Ciocco, a junior forward for UHN, detailing things like why it wasn't really a dive, though he could've stayed on his feet.

This can only enhance your appreciation of the work that a Dick Schaap did over the course of a 300 page book to make a non-college-educated pro athlete sound coherent.

"I think he catches a lot of goalies off-guard. He surprises a lot of goalies."

I guess he needed 6 more words to meet the limit.

[q] ... I think our biggest recruiting tool is our crowd on game night. There are schools like North Dakota and Wisconsin with facilities that are second to none, but I’d say the atmosphere here is among the top three in college hockey. I haven’t played in a better atmosphere. ..[/q]
I wonder where he's played or visited that he thinks ranks with UHN. :-(

[q]...me and Jacob Micflikier set up a Web site...[/q] And I wonder where he learned his English grammar. :`(

Haha!! He answered my question! Look he said:

First of all, I think they're a great asset to the ECACHL and I'm glad they represent us so well around the country. I think their program speaks for itself, as do the type of seasons they've been able to put together over the years. Obviously all that changes whenever we're playing them though! But to be honest, I love it when our home and home series comes around each year. We've had a bunch of great games over the past couple of years, so I'm already looking forward to it. Playing at Lynah is awesome, but it can't quite beat the atmosphere here at home that weekend. Our fans and the match-up definitely make that one of my favorite weekends of the season.

I quote from Tuesday's Roanoke Times:

[Q]"Oh, definitely, it don't get no bigger than that," Tech cornerback Jimmy Williams said last week. "We know they're going to come out to play. We just got to beat 'em to the ball and beat 'em to the punch."[/Q]

Another gem from the fine scholar-athletes of D-1A football.

Their "fans"? Does he mean the ones who throw pizza at the Cornell fans? And end up hitting the only Colgate fans sitting in the visiting fans' section? Though, to be fair, Smyth probably wouldn't know anything about those antics.

i agree with this statement 100%
that reminds me of an ex hahvahd player who showed me around a medical school when I was interviewing. I *did * yell at him a few times when he was on the ice. he was a great guy in person :)
