Wow, a post about college hockey during the off-season! nut

It's being reported on the USCHO boards (though I can't seem to find it anyplace official) that UNH freshman forward Eddie Caron will be transferring to Yale. Presumably he'll have to sit out a semester as Todd Marr did last fall. From what I read, Caron cited the desire for better academics (go figure) as his reason for transferring; he won the UNH team award for the player with the highest GPA. Caron is a big guy, 6'3" 220; he scored 13 points and accumulated 51 penalty minutes in 34 games for UNH.

Because Eddie Caron played at UNH for the entire 2001-02 season, he's ineligible to play for Yale for all of the 2002-03 season.

Heh.

In Woostah, we stayed at the same hotel as the UNH players. One of their players (who played with Bâby in Jrs incidentally) told Micaela that he did about an hour of homework a *week*.

Yeah, that's about consistent with what I've heard at a lot of big-money sports schools (*coughbigtencough*). However, consider that Caron graduated from Phillips Exeter, and that the schools he considered transferring to (allegedly) were Dartmouth and Yale.

I'm not saying that having the highest GPA on the UNH team is all that mind-boggling an achievement, just that it IS possible that the guy is actually serious about his academics (which is a good thing, we agree). Of course, it's still a little bit confusing why a smart guy who wanted good academics wouldn't have gone to a school that offered that in the first place.

Hey, wait a second. I only did about an hour of homework a week. What's wrong with that?

Well, I can think o two good reasons why Caron might've gone to UNH for a year. One - he might not have known exactly what he wanted, and the chance to play on a national contender like UNH must be enticing. Two - he might not have gotten into Yale or Dartmouth (or wherever) last year but is able to make the cut after a year at UNH with solid grades. Also remember, just because one guy at UNH does an hour of work a week doesn't mean everyone there does, or every hockey player.
