Mike Volonnino talks about the goaltenders dual between Hyphen and McKee this weekend and their "off-ice" battle for the Hobey Baker in the classroom. Hyphen is yet another of the 90% of Sucks students to get honors and supposedly this tips the scales in his favor for the Hobey Baker. BLAH!

screwy

Article: [www.uscho.com]

Volonnino also mentions Hyphen's slight edge in save percentage (which has now evaporated following the six goals he gave up this weekend). Hyphen has dropped to 3rd in the country in GAA (behind McKee and one of the BC goalies).

Wasn't Mike Volonnino that idiot Crimson writer whom many Cornellians subscribed on his behalf to various porno websites a few years ago? If so, he is hardly objective to make a comparison between Hyphen and McKee, writing for USCHO.com notwithstanding. The game on Saturday was proof enough who is more deserving as a goalie for the Hobey Baker award. Everyone knows how meaningful an honors student is at Hah-vahd these days (we are no fools). I am, of course, rooting for our own David McKee, but knowing the history of Hobey Baker awards, I doubt a goalie (as good as McKee is) will win it this year. And if any of the four goalies were to be bestowed such honor, it would and should be McKee, not Hyphen. 'nuf said. B-]

I don't have a problem with the article. It's pretty fair all around and Volonino is a Harvard partisan after all. But this snippet, however:
[q]It was one of the most anticipated match-ups of the ECAHL year and what a disappointment.

Not the contest for the Cleary Cup.[/q]Ah, Mike, the pisspot was awarded to Cornell weeks ago. Yesterday decided the Whitelaw Trophy.

Mike Volonnino is actually a very nice guy if you've ever met him, as some of us did a few years back. The infamous pRon provoking article in the Crimson was written at a time when Harvard students barely knew they had a hockey team. Can't blame a guy that loves hockey for trying to get his school fired up about a great rivally. And frankly, whether or not you agree with anything Mike V. writes, I think the college hockey community is lucky to have people like him around considering the hacks that usually draw the non-mainstream sports.

If you really truly hate Harvard that much and can't take a sports writer's column with a little grain of salt, you really need to work on your anger management skills.

In short, factual rebuttals of his column are spot on, but "idiot" is way outta line.

I've met Mike and he's a good guy. He also has a pretty high opinion of Cornell, which shows a modicum of patience given all the abuse that's been heaped on him here over the years.

But if he saw the weekend games and is still under the impression that the Red play a trap, he does draw an "idiot," or at least "delusional," rating for that particular judgment.

I'm not sure that he was saying Cornell plays a trap. What he was saying was that everyone knows Brodeur is a talented goalie despite the fact that the Devils play a trap, just like everyone should know that McKee is a talented goalie despite Cornell's defensive system.

But pushing academics as a reason why Hyphen is better than McKee? I don't buy it. That's why they have the Academic All-American squads, not the Hobey.

Not defending Hyphen over McKee, but the Hobey considers character on and off the ice, right?

If 2 guys were in a deadheat, I could see giving it to the better student on that basis. They are "student-athletes" after all.

IF they were in a dead heat.

Volonino was essentially making the point they're still in a dead heat. After this weekend, only a homer would say that.

USCHO has 'em tied -- is it a rounding issue?

Yes it's a rounding issue. To 4 decimal places Hyphen is still ahead.

McKee is 712/752=0.9468
Hypen is 880/929=0.9473

To four (or any greater number) decimals, McKee is ahead on save percentage.
Is this a meaningful difference? Some months ago I think the consensus here was that three decimals was about the limit that anyone wanted to push, given the uncertainty in counting shots on goal.

I sat right next to Mike V. in the press box for both Cornell games this weekend. As someone said earlier in the thread, he really does seem to have a lot of respect for Cornell, and in particular, its defensive system and ability to use size to its advantage. I thought he was a nice guy. And...he went to Harvard, so it's not much of a surprise that he tried to show Dov in the best possible light. Big deal.

After all, if I had written the article, I would have mentioned that McKee deserves to win the Hobey Baker Award because he is better at hunting :-P

Yep!
Andy W pointed out ( [elf.elynah.com] ) before the game that if Hypen let in two more goals than McKee, McKee would take the lead. It happened. :-D

You can get the raw numbers from USCHO (link in the lead post of this thread) and double check the arithmentic. They give saves and GA, the sum of which is obviously the SOG.

You do realize that the goalie with the greater number has the better save percentage, don't you? Hyphen is still ahead, by 0.0005.

And Andy's point was premised on the two goalies facing a similar number of shots, which they most certainly did not.

Ooof. One too many glasses of wine with dinner dulls the senses to such subtleties.
I will retreat to the argument that there is no justification for calculating the percentage to more than three decimals.
