stumbled across this essay(?) by Cornell recruit Matt Moulson..seems like a really down to earth guy:
i believe his stats through yesterday are:
38 GP, 54 G, 43 A, 73 PIM
any word on any of the others?

Full ride scholarship to play hockey at Cornell? Did I miss a change in Ivy League policy? Regardless, this kid sounds as solid, dedicated and more mature then a lot of the people bickering back and forth here on the forum lately. Maybe we should all take a lesson from him. (720 leg press? jeez!)

(Note that it was the editor, not Matt, who made the mistake about the scholarship.)
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm very impressed by the essay. It's a lot more mature than anything I would have put together at his age.
Schafer has got himself another highly motivated player.
Listed prospects on [members.aol.com] are:
Daniel Pegoraro-LC (11/1/01) St.Mikes (OPJHL) 5'11 180
Jon Gleed-RD (10/16/01) Brampton (OPJHL) 6'1 165
Matt Moulson-C (10/4/01) Guelph (MWJHL) 6' 175

Rarely in Canada is there a distinction made between scholoarship and financial aid. For the most part, money offered to pay for tuirtion is referred to as scholarship.

Like Joe N., he's also played box lacrosse. Should mean good stick skills.

that was a heck of an essay written by a kid mature beyond his years. Lemme tell ya that if he writes something like that in his apps for colleges he will impress some people. he definitely seems like a good guy and it is great to hear someone turn something negative into a positive.

If he already coming to Cornell, I think he has his college application essay problems taken care of. He has already impressed the one person he needed to impress.
(Please don't think I am implying that he is getting into Cornell on hockey alone. He sounds like a great kid, and I am happy that he has chosen to play at Cornell. I doubt that we were his only option.)

Great story indeed!
It's a good example of the great work ethic that a lot of Canadian kids develop from playing hockey. I've seen similar stories over the years.
And lots of the kids play box lacrosse also. I knew a few at Clarkson who did and were superb stickhandlers as Al mentioned.

I checked out the rest of that site - that of an NHLer who also has his head screwed on straight. Great site and Moulson's father has an essay on youth hockey recruiting on the site that's well done. Good kid, good family. Welcome to the Big Reds.

I heard from somewhere that shane hynes is our best pick amongst those coming in the class of 06....
Anyway... anyone knows if these guys that have committed HAVE to come to cornell? coz these are just verbal commitments right?

I think we're missing something very important here, and I'm surprised that nobody picked it up sooner. Namely...
His name sounds like a kind of beer! And Canadian beer, no less. That's awesome!
Whoa, Jon Gleed lists at 6'1", 165? Somebody get that boy some food or something. Gotta figure Schafer will try to get him to bulk up some...
Oh, and from that recruits list, I noticed that Harvard has an incoming freshman named Dan Murphy. Great, like the goalie and the ref weren't enough of them.

Anne and I are going to be in Guelph this weekend (Anne is attending a class at the Vet School) and the Dominators appear to be playing home games on Friday and Saturday. We are planning to go to the Saturday night contest in the hopes of seeing Moulson play.
Pity we still have not had a chance to go to Ithaca to get our Cornell jerseys yet. Perhaps we should make a sign, but I have no idea what it should say... maybe "CU in Big Red Country"? Somebody out there must have a better idea.
Chris

actually wow, another set of twins that have first names that start with the same letter. i guess we'll have to qualify the goals they score next year with their first name like the mcraes

I dont know if this has been mentioned before but Matt Moulson is also listed on CSS at 209, slightly lower than current charlie cook who is at 201.

So I was really interested in seeing what is "available" for adding to our incoming frosh. Off of [members.aol.com]
I went "shopping" and heres what I found
Alberta Junior Hockey League
Michael Brodeur -G Camrose (AJHL) 3-30-83
NAHL
Dan Francis-RC Lansing (NAHL) 5'9 165 12-15-81 Brother at Cornell
From New England (thank you Pats, i won a fortune)
Mike Boudreau-G Cushing Prep 6'3 190 3-18-83 Six Foot THREE? he'll block the whole net just standing there
Jake Taylor-D Green Bay (USHL) 6'4 200 -83
Art Fermenella-D Sioux City (USHL) 6'6 220 -82 Now this is a pair of defensemen.
Jonathan Durno-W Wexford (OPJHL) 6'4 195 -82 49-23-30-53-53
Ok this was strictly shopping on just looking at quick stats and size. anybody else have ideas on rounding out the class?
BTW, anyone notice that we basically only "shop" in the OHL?

Thanks for posting this link. I sent a copy to my daughter as she sometimes needs a bit of encouragement. We all need to be reminded that we can make our own opportunities.

Their stats so far:
F Cam Abbott, 47 GP, 31-36-67, 78 PIM
F Chris Abbott, 41 GP, 20-39-59, 68 PIM
F Shane Hynes, 39 GP, 29-31-60, 47 PIM
F Matt Moulson, 38 GP, 54-43-96, 73 PIM
F Dan Pegoraro, 46 GP, 24-36-60, 49 PIM
D Jon Gleed, 42 GP, 3-14-18, 30 PIM
Not that it means anything, but that's 158 goals among 5 forwards, two of whom are projected to be taken in the draft before entering Cornell.
I think last year's offense made quite an impression on the coach.

yeah damn its so tough to tell whether a prolific scorer in those leagues will turn into a great one in d1 ecac. seemed like vesce made the transition extremely fast, paolini/murray have been a steady progression upwards, and some never seem to find the scoring touch or have the opportunity to b/c they play a different role on the team than they might have had previously. it'll be interesting to see which of the current freshman break out over the next couple of years, and exciting to see if any of the recruits can make an impact right away.

I seem to recall at least one 100 point per season junior B player who didn't even crack the roster.
