i probably can't find enough people around here to do an ncaa hockey bracket, but there's no shortage on elynah of hockey knowledge and interest.

i figured we could do one for the remaining tournaments for the "big 4" conferences, and/or one for the ncaa tournament itself. we'd hafta do it just for bragging rights i guess.

if people are interested, i'll post some rules and post the HEA, ECAC, CHA, WCHA tournament brackets here...

I run an annual NCAA hockey office pool as a protest against squeakball domination. I'm usually the only one who knows anything about it, but someone else actually managed to win last year.

I'd be interested in doing a hockey bracket.

CAN YOU OUT-DO USCHO? (Probably).

Round One: Predict the national conference tournament results:
Round Two (forthcoming): Predict the NCAA tournament results.

so here are the rules:

1) final conference tourney entries must be submitted by 3PM Thursday 3/17, before any games are played. no editing brackets allowed after 3PM e.s.t.. you can just copy your "you are the committee" results if you want (http://www.uscho.com/rankings/yatc.php).

2) indicate the winning team. for the 5 conf championship games, indicate a score.

3) because not all tourneys have the same number of games, play-in games will count for 1 point each, semifinal games will count for 2 points each, consolation games will count for 3 points each and final games will count for 4 points each. Correctly guessing the two cornell game scores bestows an extra bonus point. that's a total of 50 possible points (3 play-in games, 10 semifinals, 3 consolations, 5 championships, and 2 cornell scores to pick). in the unlikely event of a tie, championship scores will be somehow used to select the winner.

4) for sheer amusement, i will paste the USCHO weekly column writers' picks to indicate how many points the website staff receive.

5) indicate name and graduation year! for amusement, indicate where cornell would be in the Pairwise rankings according to your predicted outcome.

To start things off, here are my predictions (yes, they include more than a few upsets, especially in Hockey East). As a reminder, brackets/results are due by 3PM e.s.t. Thursday. Do not forget to indicate scores for the final games, and both Cornell games, and indicate (with 0.003, 0.002, 0.001 bonus) where Cornell ranks in PWR as a result of your choices.

You have specified the following tournament results:

CCHA Play-in #2: Northern Michigan defeats Alaska-Fairbanks.
CCHA Play-in #1: Michigan State defeats Nebraska-Omaha.
CCHA Semifinal #2: Northern Michigan defeats Ohio State.
CCHA Semifinal #1: Michigan defeats Michigan State.
CCHA Championship game: Michigan defeats Northern Michigan, 3-1.
CCHA Consolation game: Michigan State defeats Ohio State.

ECAC Semifinal #2: Harvard defeats Colgate.
ECAC Semifinal #1: Cornell defeats Vermont, 2-0.
ECAC Championship game: Cornell defeats Harvard, 1-0.
ECAC Consolation game: Colgate defeats Vermont.

Hockey East Semifinal #2: New Hampshire defeats Boston University.
Hockey East Semifinal #1: Maine defeats Boston College.
Hockey East Championship game: Maine defeats New Hampshire, 4-3 (ot).

WCHA Play-in #1: Wisconsin defeats North Dakota.
WCHA Semifinal #2: Colorado College defeats Minnesota.
WCHA Semifinal #1: Denver defeats Wisconsin.
WCHA Championship game: Colorado College defeats Denver, 5-3.
WCHA Consolation game: Minnesota defeats Wisconsin.

Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #2: Holy Cross defeats Mercyhurst.
Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #1: Quinnipiac defeats Bentley.
Atlantic Hockey Championship game: Holy Cross defeats Quinnipiac, 5-2.

Due largely to Maine's predicted HEA win, Cornell sits tied at #2, winning the tiebreaker with Denver. BC loses its #1 seed. Dartmouth, Colgate, Harvard and Cornell all make the tournament.

Should we post predictions here, in this thread?

you people suck. everyone runs 3,000 rpi scenarios but when it comes to picking the scores no one wants to put themselves out! games start in an hour.

in any case, i will add the uscho columnist predictions to see how they did on the points system (when all the columnists have finished their pieces)

Being as nobody posted a prediction, so much for the contest.
In any case, the USCHO writers made some predictions. Here they are, combined:

CCHA Play-in #2: Northern Michigan defeats Alaska-Fairbanks.
CCHA Play-in #1: Michigan State defeats Nebraska-Omaha.
CCHA Semifinal #2: Northern Michigan defeats Ohio State.
CCHA Semifinal #1: Michigan defeats Michigan State.
CCHA Championship game: Michigan defeats Northern Michigan, 4-2.
CCHA Consolation game: unspecified.

ECAC Semifinal #2: Harvard defeats Colgate.
ECAC Semifinal #1: Cornell defeats Vermont, 3-1.
ECAC Championship game: Cornell defeats Harvard, 2-1.
ECAC Consolation game: Colgate defeats Vermont.

Hockey East Semifinal #2: New Hampshire defeats Boston University.
Hockey East Semifinal #1: Boston College defeats Maine.
Hockey East Championship game: Boston College defeats New Hampshire, 4-3.

WCHA Play-in #1: North Dakota defeats Wisconsin.
WCHA Semifinal #2: Minnesota defeats Colorado College.
WCHA Semifinal #1: Denver defeats North Dakota.
WCHA Championship game: Denver defeats Minnesota, 2-1.
WCHA Consolation game: Colorado College defeats North Dakota.

Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #2: Mercyhurst defeats Holy Cross.
Atlantic Hockey Semifinal #1: Quinnipiac defeats Bentley.
Atlantic Hockey Championship game: Mercyhurst defeats Quinnipiac, 4-2.

The script has a glitch and won't allow you to specify all the CCHA games. Even so, Cornell sits tied at #4. Since it is unclear how such ties are decided (CU has a better rpi here than Minny, though they win the comparison). Colgate, Harvard and Cornell make the tourney, and DC is the first team out (though the MSU/Ohio State games could change that, and can't be specified on the website).

Let's hope things go just a little bit better than the experts predict.

Sorry A-19... I think the prospect of picking all those games with teams we don't know all that much about was a bit much. Also, the fact that its 5 separate tournaments just makes it that much more hard to grasp, and the fact that i think the CCHA reseeds after the PIGs. I'd probably be much more likely to do an NCAA one with a more traditional bracket and solid structure. I do apologize :-)
